My family moved from Indiana to San Diego in 1957 in my Dad’s 53 Mercury. Made all the way hauling a trailer. Dad and Mom and us three kids. He kept the 53 till purchasing a new 58 Mercury Monterey.
It can't talk, but I can. I was three years old in 1953. And have a good memory of the times, and I enjoy the fact that I remember when cars like this were new.
When i was a kid an old lady used to turn up at at the shop in her Mercury Montery Sun valley hartop...with the green glass roof....never seen another one !
Owned a 1954, emerald green and white hardtop. Loved it! Bonus-it helped me get my old dear of now 63 years! A truly great car and oh, those tuned dual exhausts. Keep going with your beauty.
my dad was a traveling lumber salesman and bought one just like that new . I'm your age and used to ride with him, his area was northern new england, great memories rideing all over Maine and New Hampshire then he bought a 54 way different. Thanks for this video
Tom is one of the greatest human beings I have met in my life! And proud to call him my best friend! He's had soo many cars since I've known him but this Mercury is by far one of his favorites and one of mine as well. Great video 👍 subscribed! :)
I must be close in age to Tom. My parents had Mercs in the 1950s, when I was a kid. 1955 Montclair sedan. 1957 Turnpike Cruiser hardtop sedan. 1959 Parklane hardtop sedan. Then they went to GM.
I had a 53 Mercury 2 door hard top the same color. I believe it was called a “custom”. I bought it from my uncle in 1960. It was a great first car. Just a tad faster than the Fords. It had an Overdrive transmission. The Michigan salt ate it. I loved the instrument pod it had. Looked like a plane. I wish I would have saved the 50 year anniversary of Ford from the dash.
My folks bought one in 53. Traded it in 59 for a Cadillac. I recall my Dad holding me up to see engine. I think he said it had an oil bath air filter. Ours was two door and black.
I like the early fifties cars for several reasons: They are a little more advanced than the pre war cars and they have cool designs before the outrageous late fifties designs looks took over. IMHO
I like the wheels & rear fender skirts the most. Deep Red 50s color for the steel wheel (color appropriate for 50s era) plus chrome spinner hubcaps (center cap is the spinner) white-wall tires are ok but very hard to keep clean - as a Daily Driver Merc. OK for wide white-wall tires if Merc is a Daily Driver on dry roadways.
I think the base model was Custom starting in '52 & around '56 it was changed to Medalist. Monterey started as a '50 that was Ford's cousin to the Crestliner. Nice touch with the '56 Dodge Lancer spinners. The '57 DeSoto & all '57s were 14 inches. These are 15s.

Cool car is right when I was a little boy my parents had a 1953 mercury flathead, V8 automatic 2 ton paint that’s back when cars had a classic look Today’s cars are two generic, all looking the same
They killed the demand for it by turning it into an exact copy of the Ford with different trim, and of course, a higher price. Before about 1980, Mercurys were a little bigger than Fords, justifying their higher price.
@@AdamWaffen Not quite. Ford KILLED the market for it by eliminating the difference between it and the Ford car, but still charged more for it. If it had been a little bigger than the Ford, as was the case before the late 70s, it would have sold well enough. Screw computer geeks. They only know about Datsuns and Toyotas.
