Welcome to our Skepta ft JME That’s Not Me American Reaction!!! This is our latest video reaction from our new music reaction channel Beer’s & Bars. Here we listen, react, and breakdown bars while enjoying some of our favorite beers. Today's we just witnessed an amazing UK Grime sound with a nice late 80s old school video which was a perfect combination!! Skepta laces the hell out of this Grime sound with endless punchlines and JME brings a great flow with an effortless cadence!! We swear the UK Hip Hop scene is a force to be reckoned with and Skepta ft. JME That’s Not Me is another great form of evidence to prove our point! Looking forward to more from Skepta & JME!

Not sure if anyone’s put this in the comments yet, but this tune is so big because it was basically a comeback to proper grime by skepta. In the late 00s/early 2010s skepta was releasing more radio friendly songs. This song was a return to his early 2000s sound, hence the video too

Grime comes from UK Garage and House from the 90s, a lot of “dance” style beats a lot of MCs used to get on. Our drill is inspired from Chicago, but we made it into our own thing over the mid 2010s to late 2010s, and now what NY drill is/is heavily inspired by now. There’s a difference, both are very important to the UK rap scene. Smooth rap is now really picking up now here with the likes of Knucks and Loyle Carner becoming huge.

Grime is grime. UK Drill is our version of drill. Grime is a culture and genre that came about in the early 2000s, basically UK Garage and Jungle/Drum and Bass MCs mixed dancehall/Jamaican soundsystem culture with US hip-hop (e.g.the bars), if you think it's just UK rap you'll get unstuck if you ever watch a set or clash. This is the nutshell within a nutshell version obviously. Have fun discovering it!

This is such a tuuuune 🔥🔥🔥🔥 UK Drill and Grime are separate genres. Grime evolved earlier, between about 2000-2003 and has been about ever since. This is Grime - in fact this is a classic, iconic Grime track. Skepta and JME are brothers in real life and both huge, respected Grime legends in their own right. JME sticks largely to Grime (Skepta has made more music on a wider variety of genres) and tbh if you want to understand what Grime is as a genre, you can’t go wrong with JME. Also, lots of Skepta, obviously Wiley and Dizzee Rascal for the early crystallisation of the Grime sound and style. Would recommend you follow this up with Wot U Call It by Wiley, and I Luv U by Dizzee Rascal to hear two early iconic grime records and you will understand the genre a lot more. I think you just thought JME sounds like Akala because of the accent - most well-known Grime MCs are from London, growing up not far from one another, so many have a similar accent, but if you live over here I don’t think you’d think their voices are similar… JME has one of the most recognisable voices in Grime! The ‘Mario’ type 8/16-bit sound is actually a classic characteristic of Grime. As a genre, Grime has a lot of parallels with punk, in terms of being a genre that gave kids with no musical background or experience the chance to just DIY, and sonically there is something of a similarity in the raw aggression of youth and frustration with society/the system. These kids are the generation that grew up when computers became more common place in the home, and music software would be ripped and shared about… kids installed cracked copies of Fruity Loops and other basic music production apps onto their machines. They were basic and a lot of the sounds were 8/16 bit type sounds hence why the beats they made feel like they share similarities with game console sounds/music. These kids were not musicians, they just taught themselves to make beats by using these cheap software packages. The default setting on the software was 140bpm too, which is another Grime characteristic- it became commonplace because of the software default! Hence why Grime has a very distinctive sound to other rap genres. On top of this, the vocals are usually fast and aggressive, and oftentimes comical. This is because those kids who made those beats for themselves and their friends to rap over, used to take their music to Grime clashes (on London rooftops on pirate radio) and essentially spit their bars in crowded rooms full of MCs vying to be the best… It’s a great Genre to do a deep dive into. My favourite of any rap sub genre tbh. So many of the great MCs you have already covered - Kano, Ghetts, Wretch, Skepta, Stormzy, Akala, even Little Simz, started out on Grime before moving into other areas. Kano and Ghetts still make a lot of Grime records.

I’d like to add that the whole milk crate thing is because these guys all did pirate radio too, up in peoples bedrooms not fully funded studios so it was make shift set ups, so it’s showing more of who they are rather than a flash set up with a high quality video production because “that’s not me” that’s not where I came from. Although as soon as the money starts flooding in and technology improved obviously their videos and set ups got better lol

It's hard to define this for outsiders, but this isn't drill at all. It's pure Grime. The lines have become blurred between Grime & drill. For true Grime fans like myself, those lines are obvious but for people coming in new it's hard to see the difference. All I can say is Grime is a whole different thing. Drill has a much more American influence while Grime has much more of a Jamaican influence.

Skepta and jme are legends are brothers, and legendary artists from UK grime scene. You can check some of their stuff from their group. BBK also, eg Athlete or Red Card. You should also check out dizzee rascal who is another grine legend. I'm enjoying watching your journey through the UK artists. Keep it up!

This is grime and came before drill and was popularised in naughties. Uk drill came about in 2015 and was popularised in America through likes of pop smoke

If hip hop is rock n roll, Grime is punk rock. Drill is different - the current generations sound.

Theres some similarities but Drill has a faster tempo to it and started early to mid 2010's, Grime been with the UK since the start. Dizzie Rascal and BBK, (Boy Better Know), Skepta and that. All of that and this is Grime.
