In today's video, I'm sharing some of the more difficult questions I ask myself before I buy something. I find I ask these when I'm having an especially difficult time combatting impulse buy temptations, or when I catch myself boredom shopping. These more challenging questions have helped me dig a little deeper as to why I feel like I want something. Sometimes I say yes, other times I say no. Thinking about these questions helps me make that decision more clear.
What are some harder questions you ask yourself before you buy?

Fantasy Self… I think I first heard that expression from you. It stopped me in my tracks. So much of what I had purchased and my outfit images in my head were for my fantasy self. Thank you so much for helping me come to the realization of this. Still to this day, when I look at an item, I think to myself, Mary, are you going to wear this or is this for your fantasy self?!? I have determined that Fantasy Self needs to get her own job to pay for her own clothing. I’m not doing it anymore. LOL As always, thanks for the great content.

Back to school shopping was something I looked forward to every year with my mom. We didn't have a ton of money growing up so this annual event was a big deal to me. My mom would always wait outside the change room and ask me things like, "are you actually going to wear it", "do you have more than one outfit in mind", things like that. I definitely use questions like that to this day when I shop.

My nana loves telling me a story about my sister when she was around age 6. She wanted to buy a sweater at Macy's and asked my sister's opinion and she said "oh Nana that does look nice, but can you live without it?" Obviously we can all live without a majority of the items in our lives; however, that framework helps me prevent overspending and overconsumption to this day.

The fantasy self and asking ourselves if it's "her" that we actually want to emulate are HUGE for me. I spent so much time hating my curvy body because clothes didn't look on me, the way they looked on lanky girls. I started shopping very differently when I embraced my body type! AND BONUS, I always get asked about what I'm wearing now a days. Dress for yourself!! I saw in a How-The-French-Shop video with Alexa Chung that French women often filter what they buy based on "what they know suits their body, quality fabrics, and what they know their man likes them in." I think the man part can be widened to what other people notice we look good in, not because exterior validation is what matters, but because it can often be an indicator of us exuding comfortability in who we are :)

Having chosen a colour palette for myself has helped curb my spending. Now when I see something I like, I ask myself "Does it go with my colour palette?" If it doesn't, it's surprisingly simple to move on! 😃

I resonate a lot with the fantasy self purchase. Retirement and covid have restricted my social life in the last few years. I buy like I still have places to go and people to see. I need to let that go and realize I have more than I need right now. If my life changes and I need something, the stores will still be there waiting.

Hard agree with point #1, that mindset shift has been a game changer for me and my Pinterest boards 😂 the line of questioning I take is: would I wear this outfit or do I just like this picture? How would I feel wearing this outfit? I usually like the more minimalist aesthetic, but I know that if dressed that way, I’d feel bland and bored.

1. Do I already have something similar that would do the same job? 2. Do I like this better than something similar I already have in my wardrobe? 3. Is this the best possible version? I.e. I don't want to buy something and then spot a better version another time and then want to buy that too to upgrade. 4. Would I buy this if it were a lot more money I.e. do I love, love, love it and would be willing to shell out for it, or is part of the reason only because its affordable.

I have a strong fantasy buying tendency. Since November I have been planning a car camping trip. I bought a lot of cold weather items, camping and backpacking gears, food on the road. Do I want to run away? Maybe but it’s not that strong. I am retired to care for my mother. She’d be ok by herself for a week. It’s more like the longing for open road, audio books, going to the beach or trail; the old self from 20 years ago.

wow, that fantasy piece is really key for me.. i'm slowly disassociating from my fantasy self but its so difficult to let that " ideal" go....i always think i may have occasion someday to wear it...for me personally, i'm drawn to heels and the frilly sort of glam gowns .. case in point about 3, 4 ? years ago i was at a consignment shop and saw this stunning floor length ball gown.. i absolutely had to have... it ended up tucked away in a trunk because i have nowhere to wear it. I'm in my early 50's, single mom, i home school, i'm a full time caregiver for my elderly mom who has advanced dementia/ Alzheimers.. i'm home all day every day, i have the most boring life so i knew i'd never have an occasion to wear it but it was like that siren call.... it made me feel good to have that piece.. it was like a temporary adrenalin high. Well, i was recently invited to this red carpet hollywood themed party so i finally!!! had the right occasion to wear it... and while it was sort of exciting to " doll myself up".. honestly about an hour and a half in, my feet were killing me, the dress was really heavy and cumbersome to walk in.. i was longing for my flannel p.j.s and socks.. i realized my fantasy girl tricked me.. i like being home and cozy, being comfy. I honestly didn't enjoy myself. I'm definitely not getting cost per wear.. sigh.. lesson learned. I guess i'm still working through that whole reality vs fantasy life! It's a process.... I need to swap my heels for birks and converse!!!

I could resonate with your last point. I was buying more dressy clothes as if I had a job to wear them to, but I didn’t. (That was my fantasy self.) Finally it dawned on me that I was wasting my money on items that saw very little wear and I decided to invest in more casual everyday clothes instead. I love your channel and I love your honesty as it helps me to be honest with myself in asking those hard questions when buying clothes. Thank you!

I'd be interested in a video where you talk about your relationship with fashion influencers more. It seems they had influence with you and you would covet their looks and lifestyle whereas for me and most people I know they have no influence. I can't think of a time where I bought something solely because a person online had it. (Although I'm plus size so most fashion influencers aren't relevant to me).

You are so right about that fantasy self! Ultimately the clothes we buy need to suit our lifestyle, and make us feel completely comfortable and confident by fitting us well. Every now and then, however, we do feel the need to express ourselves a little differently with something unique, and if that unique item doesn’t break the bank, even if it’s on a whim, I will buy it. 😅

Ugh, all so relatable. I'd see someone else looking so badass wearing a pair of over the knee boots, a certain pair of earrings, red eyeshadow, etc. and want to emulate them. I would almost fall into a trance and go hunting for and often buy whatever it was. There was little regard for my own body type, lifestyle, and personal aesthetic. Whenever I want to buy something now, I have to answer yes to ALL of these questions: 1) Does this serve a valuable function? 2) Do I already own things that serve the same function? 3) If yes, is another thing serving the same function useful to me? 4) Does it make sense for my lifestyle? 5) Would it flatter me and make me feel how I like to feel? 6) Does it even fit my personal aesthetic? I also recently decluttered a lot of my fantasy self, and love the idea of taking what you need from her and incorporating it into your real life in ways that serve you.

Thanks Christina for all these wise videos you’re posting that our society needs… truly! You are way ahead of your young years, which I’m MUCH older than you and yet I’m not ashamed to say I look up to your wise way of spending and shopping. Ironically, we see in the media and influencers how chic it is to dress like French women. I’ve stayed in France several times and hands down, their style is def something to aspire to. I don’t claim to know any about their fashion sense completely but what we don’t know is they actually don’t own much clothes because their clothing storage are very limited over there (at least the regular folks we know of from there). Also they take care of their clothes well and most of the time, they don’t even put them in a dryer. Instead, they hang dry them so they last longer. I think given the limited quantity they can own, they’ve learned to be creative on how to mix and match outfits, and buy only what they need. Unfortunately, we don’t hear much of this. But I get it; this reality won’t help businesses sell clothes. Keep up your great work and I look forward to hearing more of them. 👍

Such a great set of questions. Boredom and scrolling online resonates with me. Accepting my body and how clothes fit is also important. My number one question I ask myself while looking at an image I’m drawn to is: How tall and slender is this model? I’m 5’4” and average weight. So, I’ll never look like some of the model’s images I like. And that’s okay.

My phrasing of one of your questions is "what am I really trying to buy (and will buying this get it for me)?" and I know that every purchase is an experiment, so the question is "is the price point ok if it ends up being a fail?" On buying multiples, "is getting another one of these a good decision (three of the same shirt, ok because they wear out, three of the same stainless steel cooking pan......) And the question "Beyond the emotion, is this a materially good purchase for me?"

Christina, so many things to think about. I’m outfit challenged and often rely on inspiration from “influencers ” only to have the outfit look horrible on me. When I shop or am influenced to shop I’ve started thinking does this balance my body? I’m an inverted V- trivial but it does make a difference, does it suit my real life? I live in a rural area. Color and tone of clothes are taken in to consideration, too. Warm tones do me no favors. Very few “influencers” have outfits that work for me. I’m 63 and most influencers my age don’t dress with the style I’m comfortable. They’re a little more patterned and trend focused. But cobalt blue, which is my favorite color is the one color I incorporate.Quiet, simple, classic with a little edge. Lots of boxes to check and save to later is a great tool.

These are great questions! Asking why you want something is the key to starting to not shop. For me, i really have a hard time in stores and in quick make a decision moments (like launches). Question: does it still count as an impulse purchase if you added it to a wishlist and then thought about it extensively and still wanted it, but it was a want and not a need? An “extra” piece rather than something practical? Asking because I’ve had my eye on a gorgeous red genuine leather jacket on Poshmark, and I want it for a cosplay mostly, but I can also see myself wearing it all the time with a lot of my closet. But I don’t NEED it, so I keep going back and forth even though I WANT it. It’s a challenge.
