I enjoy a good puzzle every now and again. Particularly one that seems very easy... Until you try to solve it.
next are a five classic questions/ puzzles/ problems. If you've read a bit about problem solving before, you might know some of them. But I hope that you will nevertheless find it interesting to revisit them. (And perhaps make the same mistakes as before!) And if you don't know them, you're in for a treat!

Answer for the cup contain an awfully unuseful step. 1&2 + 2&3 are sufficient
@sarijaradat
@sarijaradat 8 лет назад
the steps (1&2 + 2&3) are necessary to satisfy the rule (all cups have to be moved once at least)
@ba_livernes
@ba_livernes 8 лет назад
+sari jaradat That's the point, only two moves are needed. However, in the video, your solution is (1&2+1&3+1&2), when it can be achieved with only the two moves (1&2+2&3)

As said before about the last problem, your 3 steps are absolutely unnecessary and devious to find a solution with the given rules. I also found a solution with only 2 steps, by turning all cups at least once (1&2 and 2&3).

I got them all right, but the trickiest one was the towers because the diagram was misleading. However, a2-c2=b2 has to be 0 since the hypotenuse and a side are the same length. Therefore the towers have to be touching to make a vertical line.
@bikcrum

not satisfied with two towers puzzle since rope forms a curve occupying more distance than simply straight line. Distance is undetermined in this case but can't be zero.

the drawing with the bent rope is just to trick you! Consider the numbers and forget about the picture! It's all analitic
@GraveUypo
@GraveUypo 8 лет назад
distance zero implies the towers occupy the same space, and the rope clips itself to attach to the same point.. which is not possible. and even if the towers are touching, the rope can't bend in a perfectly sharp 180 degrees angle and go through itself to attach to the same point on both ends. that rope is either a tiny bit longer than 15 meters, or the distance from the ground is a tiny bit more than 7,5m. also the center of the two ends of the rope are at least the diameter of the rope apart from each other, which makes the distance > 0 it's nitpicking and obviously overthinking a simple puzzle, but it's true.

@ba_livernes

FliiFe Desingn Oh, I just realized I was wrong... I got 8 as answer because 7.5^2*x^2 = 15^2 - This is where i got wrong It's not 15^2, but 7.5^2. Now I see... I substract 7.5^2 of 7.5^2 and I get 0... Welp, I'm a bit dumb

+sari jaradat - The cups problem is actually simpler. You can solve it in two flips. Rules say flip 2 at a time and flip all cups at least once. So following that: Before: Cup 1 Regular, Cup 2 Inverted, Cup 3 Regular 1. Flip cups 1 and 2 After: Cup 1 Inverted, Cup 2 Regular, Cup 3 Regular 2. Flip cups 2 and 3 After: Cup 1 Inverted, Cup 2 Inverted, Cup 3 Inverted So all cups are now facing same direction (inverted) As you can see only 2 flips were required!!

# 4 The task was, and I quote, "Which two cards do you need to turn over to see if John is right?". We know that Vowel cards are even but because we do NOT KNOW the supposed relationship between ODD numbers and Consonant cards, it is not possible to determine if he is right by turning only two cards. (Consonants could be either ODD or EVEN. And EVEN cards could be either Vowels or Consonants.)
@aleksandro1

For the 3rd solution Pull the rope from both ends with each meter pulled from each end the rope will lift up 2 times the amount of meters pulled. Let's say hypothetically the towers don't have width. The distance between both of them would be 7.5 because you will pull the rope 3.75 meters from both sides and it will rise up 7.5 meters(3.75×2=7.5). 7.5+2.5= 10 meters which is the height of the towers. This is of course a alternative solution as the other one is 7.5 meters pulled from each side. But yeah. It is partially right partially wrong.

Can I try? you have square, each corner you have a switch which is hidden. When all switches are either up or down the light goes on. You may look at any two corner and either flip or not the switches. You may either do nothing, flipt one or flipt both. After everytime you look the square is rotated so you don't know which corners you just looked. Question. How many times you need to look to the corners in order to ensure that light goes on 100%?

For the fourth solution we need to flip all the cards because For A there could be a uneven number and he would be proven wrong For B there could be a Even number he would be proven wrong For 4 there could be a consonant he would be proven wrong. For 7 the would be a vowel and lastly he would be proven wrong too. So the answer is all the cards
@samanthasmith8296
@samanthasmith8296 8 лет назад
Yes except, in the card one, it only states that even numbers will always have vowels, but it never says that odd numbers can't have vowels, so you really shouldn't need to flip over B or 7, because it never specifically states that /only/ /even/ /numbers/ can be vowels.

The rope between the towers can only be 2.5 meters from the ground if the ground curves or the rope is not at the top of the towers. If the rope were to be at the top of the tower and the ground did not curve, then half the rope would have to occupy the exact same space as the other half, making the rope only 7.5 meters long. If it shifted even a little bit, there would be a small increase to the distance between the rope and the ground that is not accounted for. And I fail to see why in the cups puzzle, you don't flip first 1 &2 and then 2&3. Saves a step.

before i look at the answer, i think what you do it put a lid on it first (so the water doesn't come out), then tilt the jug so it is diagonal. If the water level meets the corners of the jug, it's half, if the water level is lower than the corners it is less than half and if the water level is higher than the jug corners then the water level is higher than a half. IT WAS RIGHT!!!! i swear that i did not look at the answer before typing this comment.

The hardcore math nerds have elsewhere pointed out that his solution is impossible in physical reality and only works in a Euclidean, analytic sense.

The first puzzle is incorrect. Ther is one mistake and one omission. The jug has a pouring lip, which means that if you pour, as shown in the diagram, the water will start to pour before it reaches the top of the jug. The result cannot be correct. The omission is that the jug is guaranteed to have parallel sides. If the sides are not parallel the "result" cannot work.

Your error is, that the bat costs 1.00 more, for a total of 1.10. If the ball was 0.10 then the bat would have to be 1.10. (1 dollar more). 0.10+1.10=1.20 As an equation: 1.10 = x + (x+1.00) 1.10-1.00 = x+x 0.10 = 2x 0.10/2 = 2x/2 0.5 = x

#4 But then you would not prove that all vowels have even numbers on the other side if the cards you turn over had odd numbers on the other side.

I don't understand the problem about whether the water is half way, less than or above than, because its quite clear that the water is less than half way.. No abstract thought required to solve it, so is the problem supposed to be what is the solution to prove its half way without measuring it for someone who you assume can't see it correctly

7:15 The towers are not connected directly, old chum, they are connected by a piece of rope that is not made of the same generic material. By the way, you said between the towers, nothing to do with the rope...…

1-4 were trivial, 5 has a simpler solution - 1&2 then 2&3.

If the distance between the two towers is 0 there is no space for the rope lol

The card one is also wrong cuz if you flip 4 and their is a consonant it disproves and if B has even it disproves

Great video but there are 2 mistakes in it. As mentioned a million times in the comments the cup question can be done easier (or you forgot to say that all cups needed to stand be with the open side on top). And the 4 card question doesn't say that the cards with uneven numbers have consonants on the other side, it only tells us that the even cards have vowels on the other side. So answer a+4 could still be right. (And I read that some people said that the question with the towers isn't correct because of the curve of the rope. That's not true because it could be a really thin rope that folds in the middle instead of bending.) Nevertheless I really enjoyed these puzzles :) (Btw sorry for my bad English Haha I hope everybody still understands what I'm saying ;) )

If a card has a vowel, it has to have an even number on the other side. If a card has a vowel and an odd number, that premise would be disproven. So for it to be true, a card with an odd number cannot have a vowel and vice versa. It does not imply that if a card has an even number, it has to have a vowel on the other side; an even number can have a consonant on the other side. e.g. Every man is a human but not every human is a man. You only need to check the vowels and odd numbers. The other cards can have either type on the other side and would not affect the truth value.

No the a+4 isn't right, cause if you turn around the 7 it could have a vowel on the other side, which would disprove the theory. The theory is that if there's a vowel on one side then there should be an even number on the other side. That means that if you turn around the 7 and it has a vowel, it would disprove the theory
