IF YOU CAN MAKE IT BETTER THAN IT WAS ... THEN WHY NOT DO IT?

When looking back at the way things were, when you didn't know what you know now, how can you not make things better? This motor was just thrown together, in the early days, to just get it going to run around town on. Now is the time I am thinking about parting with it and, after a small noise made me tear it apart, I am glad I did. I have now decided to go all the way with a total rebuild so the next owner will have a fresh start and a good bike for years to come. Hope you enjoy!

I built my machine shop around the old panheads and shovels, I'm building it up for the old Triumphs these days. I love resurrecting the old engines, I hope my grandchildren and great grandchildren carry it on into the future. Men built this world we live in, and men will keep it going!

@@user-iy6de7qi1r You are right. someone did have to design and make it in the begining. Many are not rocket science but are just useful and can be fabricated pretty easy. A person just has to try. If you've got a lathe you can always make a sleeve and keep a standard breather, just green locktite it in place.
@itsmytimeletsgo
@itsmytimeletsgo 5 дней назад
@@user-iy6de7qi1r I most cases it would have to be pretty thin to work. When over sizing to the new breather is it only .030" of an inch so making a sleeve and then machining the cuouts in the proper place would not leave much material to work with, let lone try to press a piece that thin into the hole. If it was destroyed beyond that then maybe you could if you bored the hole out larger and then tried to make a sleeve it would be the only way to save it. Not impossible but it would be the only route to go. Thanks for commenting.

I noticed you using that shorty wrench for the head bolts. Try a 1/4" small ratchet with a 9/16th (1/4" fitting) great for running the bolts up, then swap to your torque. Massive time and patience saver! 😂 Love the vids Ralph, love my shovels, Peace out brudda ~

I just recently started watching your channel & find it amazing as well as amusing. My 81 has the extra passages to scavenge top end oil from the cylinders to the tappet blocks. Did you eliminate this by changing cylinders ? If so, why ? Do you think the grove in the breather bore was critical & what was the cause ? A new S&S .030 over gear is $ 200 USD down here. Have you ever used the Evo reed valve breather ? Great detailed video, Thanks Ralph
@itsmytimeletsgo
@itsmytimeletsgo Месяц назад
Welcome to the channel! This bike did not have the outside drain type cylinders. Yes the groove in the breather bore is critical as it will cause an excess build up of oil in the case and usually results in excess oil being pushed out the lower crankcase breather hose. Going to use a breather valve in an 89" Evo I am building now. They are only for 92 and up type motors. Haven't in the past but look forward to trying it. Everything is expensive up here. ha ha. Thanks for comenting.

I always learn something from your videos, and a VERY nice scoot that is. A question for you on our 78, I'm hesitant to use the manual's suggestion for spark plug torque ,18 to 28 ft lbs. I cant bring myself to go more than 14 ft lbs.
@itsmytimeletsgo
@itsmytimeletsgo Месяц назад
Thanks glad to hear that. I really do that by feel, rather than torque myself. I snug it up and give her another 1/4 turn or so and that usually does it, with the old heads especially. They have had so many plugs in and out that one has to be careful with them. Thanks for commeting.

@itsmytimeletsgo
@itsmytimeletsgo Месяц назад
I don't think is is possible in the hole as there is the large window and it would probably fetch up. It is also needs to be very deep and accurate right to the bottom of the hole. The cut takes out about .030" so that would be a lot of honing lol. Thanks for the question and commenting.

A lot of people have awful things to say about the Shovelhead. But when you consider the cylinders and head are held together with 4 studs and 5 head bolts and everything since then has just used 4 much thinner studs, maybe that old Shovel wasn't so bad?

I'm almost afraid to ask, what that tool you're using cost? The only reason I ask is the other day I was looking for the tool the remove and install the cam bearing from JIMS. I just about passed out at the price, almost $400.00 to almost $ 500.00 depending on the engine model.

Say what you want about Harley Davidson, the aftermarket, specifically S&S. Their stuff isn't just overpriced, it's ridiculously expensive. $305.00 Canadian is crazy. A breather oversized or not is a $25.00 part, $30.00 at the most.
