Hello Jim, Denis from France, 68 years old, playing guitar since 4 years You sing very well and I love the meaning you play I would like to learn this fantastic song. Could you explain the finger picking arpegio? Thanks a lot Jim for your channel, I've learned a lot thanks to you
Thank you again for your valued support Don. This song is timeless isn't it? - one of those recordings that you can never get tired of listening to. The combination of Gordon's vocals and guitar, with Red Shea's fabulous lead accompaniment, Rick Haynes providing perfect subtle bass and the added magic of the orchestral strings just sets this apart as one of those iconic classic tracks.
A beautiful version of the classic. I will take some time to play along with your video, as I've always wanted to learn more from Gordon Lightfoot. Thanks for this!
Thank you very much for your support TT. I'd been playing (strumming) guitar for 5 years, but then heard Gordon Lightfoot's guitar playing for the 1st time in 1970. I wanted to play like that, and described it as a "jangling" guitar-sound. I was told it was "playing fingerstyle" so I asked what that meant. No such thing as the internet then of course, so learning "fingerstyle" was an alien concept to me, and progress was slow - I read notes on how Joan Baez played; they told you which fingers to place on which strings and what picking pattern to play. I was familiar with "painting by numbers" but this was a totally different ball-game altogether. Ears were especially important, because all I got back then were very fleeting glimpses of my favourite performers on our black & white TV screen. Good luck with this fabulous song - it is timeless.
@@Lowdenjim Thanks for sharing that. I first noticed the beauty in this style of playing from the music of Iron & Wine. I began guitar at age 21, and Dylan's don't think twice, it's alright was my "mount everest". I got fluent with that song eventually, and finger picking became my style of play.
@@TT-up6gi Not heard of Iron & Wine so will definitely have a listen thanks. Dylan's DTT was my Mt Everest too - I never imagined being able to pay that. Sometimes I imagined I had to be listening to 2 guitars playing in perfect harmony!
