Melody Ehsani, when faced in her early 30’s with the edict of her Persian culture -- seduce a man and get married or you are “spoiled” for life -- said no to these expectations and took the lone and often scary path of staying true to herself. In trusting her deep inner knowing, Melody, despite anxiety, chose love over fear when she dropped out of law school (the career she was told would make her worthy of a man), pursued her calling as a designer and took the courageous path of finding what makes her happy as an independent person without a partner. This commitment to finding contentment and fulfillment alone, which included following the pulse of everything she loved to do and was genuinely attracted to (like taking piano lessons and going to concerts and basketball games alone), ultimately magnetized her the career of her dreams and an expansive partner at 39 that now continues to inspire her to become even more whole in herself.
“There's a term in Farsi for girls that aren't married before a certain age, and it literally means you've spoiled. I was the first woman in my family to break this cycle... I'm never going to force myself to do something that makes me uncomfortable or that I don't like or have a good feeling about because I should be putting myself out there. So instead I just started doing all the things that I loved…I think we undermine love so much. We also don't trust it because it's hurt so many of us so many times, but, I think that if you can trust what you love, you will never, ever go wrong.”

Honey, I have been married 40 years. I was engaged twice before I married my husband. I wouldn't just "settle" for whoever. Don't feel bad for waiting for the right person. You will meet the one when it's time.
@E_MZ_
@E_MZ_ 2 года назад
@@Littlewildone0 I think some of this is cultural pressure that you and I can’t relate to. These women are SHAMED in their communities for being single. It’s not about “settling” when you have to deal with the vocalized disappointment of all of your relatives. When you’re treated as defective if you’re unmarried. I don’t want to assume that you come from a western background, but you most likely do (Correct me if I’m wrong). But you and I have the privilege of being able to do what we want and pursue what we want with little flack.

Being single is the best thing, especially after you are tormented emotionally by someone who never deserved you. Rather than set the bar lower in terms of what I want, and try to convince myself that going for someone less attractive but more stable is going to be the solution. I'd rather be single for as long as it takes, and if that's forever, so be it! I learned, something that I wouldn't ever have believe 4-5 yrs ago, that I don't need anyone other than myself to feel happy and fulfilled,

You are correct. I am done with having to define the meaning and validity of my life by my marital and social status. I invested over 30 years of my existence on go nowhere relationships that were so confining. That feeling of losing myself in the existence of someone else is the worst feeling and i cannot do it. I threw it all out the window at 43 and never looked back. I accomplished more in 15 years not looking for a relationship than I ever did in one. I ramped up my earning potential I bought a 3 family i grew! Almost 60 and it would be nice to find a companion but I know now its not needed.

What she shared about her husband not allowing her to give up her identity for him, has me tearing up because, across many cultures in the world, including American culture, women are expected to give their lives away for everyone else. I’m single and in my mid 30’s. I’m not purposely single but people have made me feel so bad about myself and my life for not being there already. And it’s as if my life, as is doesn’t matter or have real purpose, to them, because I’ve failed at becoming a wife and a mother, and my window of opportunity to do so is closing. I don’t believe that and I totally understand that I shouldn’t let that hurt me, but I would be lying if I said that it doesn’t hurt. I want to find love but I want it for the right reasons and not because of my age or gender. I hope to, one day, find a husband who has the kind of knowledge to expect me to keep my identity, like that.

It’s amazing. I used to live really near to her store in LA and was like whoever owns this place is a badass, then I started to listen to her podcast and was like she IS a badass but also has the most unexpectedly sweet voice!!! Now I see her here telling her story, and I’m blown away by how normal and human she is, displaying her insecurities and not focusing on or showing off about all the shiny things about her life. I’m currently 39 and single and childless so I relate to what she speaks about. I’m from Spain and we have an expression which is similar to the Farsi one she refers to. Ours is “overcooked rice”.

What she said about seduction really resonates with me. I once had a conversation with an ex where they simply said something along the lines of I’m not seductive, I literally said to them “You saying I’m not seductive or can’t be feels like it’s taking away my womanhood, my power” However I know now I don’t need to be seductive, I just need to be myself-or learn what that means to me. I love her words about this💜

I am in my late 50e and while I was partnered for much of my adult life (with good people) I have been single for more then 10 years and feel it is absolutely a gift because I think that when we are in long-term relationships we often fall into habits of relational dynamics that often keep us from growing. It's not easy - it is often easier to have someone around to negotiate the world with - but it is worthwhile.

When I did say yes, it was never with complete submission. I will go braless, wear full tea length skirts or blue jeans and tshirt and that can't be dictated for if that level of control is forfeited what will they demand next?
