How to Get Rid of Mice, Spiders, and Ants. How to keep pests out without hurting yourself with chemical repellents? According to the Canadian Center of Occupational Health and Safety, the chemicals in pest repellants may cause headache, diarrhea, mental confusion, weakness, loss of reflexes, unconsciousness, and even death.
How about we go “au naturel” and try out some pest repellents that you can find right in your kitchen cabinet or garden? Try eucalyptus essential oil to keep spiders away, peppermint oil to wipe away ant trails, marigold to repel all kinds of pests like mosquitoes and flies, and aluminium foil or original scented dryer sheets to keep mice out.

SUMMARY
-Add some peppermint oil to your cleaning solution and mop your floor with it to wipe away ant trails.
-Lemon basil and cinnamon basil can effectively repel the Anopheles gambiae complex, a group of mosquito species known to carry malaria.
-Lavender scent can protect your home, pets, and other plants from being infested by bugs.
-According to research, nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip that your kitty loves so much, acts as an irritant against these common household pests.
-Rosemary is commonly used in cooking and has medicinal properties. It also attracts butterflies but deters flies and mosquitoes.
-Apply a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil to some cotton balls and put them in areas where you often find spiders.
-Mix baking soda with sugar, and place a bowl of water near it. This lethal trio creates a chemical reaction inside the roaches’ stomach, which, let’s just say, won’t end well for the little buggers.
-Marigold contains pyrethrum, a compound that’s commonly found in commercial bug sprays.
-Put original scented dryer sheets in these places to keep mice out.
-Protect yourself and your family by setting traps with peanut butter for mice and rats.
-Mouse-proof your house by placing sheets of aluminum foil in their hideouts.
-Try ultrasonic repellents if you’re willing to spend the money. These things emit high-frequency sounds that are only sensitive to a mouse’s ears.
-Borax is used as a cleansing agent and in glass-making. It can also kill ants, roaches, termites, spiders, and even mold.
-Use steel wool or copper mesh to mouse-proof your house and seal the deal with caulking.
-If you need to keep wild animals out of your garden, cayenne pepper is a perfectly safe way to keep them at bay. Sprinkle it on the topsoil to keep rabbits and squirrels from munching on your fresh veggies.
-Burning neem leaves gives about 76% mosquito protection for up to two hours. You can also heat the leaves up for 25% protection.
-Another plant that’s proven to fend off mosquitoes is lemon thyme. Smash it and apply it to your skin after running a test on a small area.

For ants, get a box of boric acid and put some where the ant have to walk through it. When they get back to their nest, they will contaminate the nest. It takes a few days.

Lavender works for keeping mosquitoes at bay . My grandbaby girl and I use a lot of lavender baby lotion when we are going outside and we don't get bit by the little buggers anymore. A friend told me about it after she went to purchase some lavender oil and could not find anywhere that was not sold out . Someone at the pharmacy in our county told her to try the lotion and she did. It worked great for her so she told me and I swear by it and so does the baby girl .

I am a mosquito magnet. I will definitely try this. Two years ago I used a lawn service for a couple of years that sprayed for mosquitoes. It seems that no one had mentioned this and I’m really surprised. Not many of these plants mentioned will do anything as just a plant. The volatile oils and terpenes need to be removed from the plant, often distilled and then put in the areas of possible entry to your home etc.

@@funnythat9956 I can verify that peppermint oil does repel mice and rats. However, you have to use pretty high concentrations of it and as such it's not indoor safe. Better to make or buy peppermint oil and use a jar with holes drilled into it and a sponge inside to put the oil on. It lasts a while that way and has a chance to actually work. I tried this with several jars around my front porch and it did work, until it dried out.

With some experimentation, I have found that you have to use essential oils and not the plants. I use peppermint oil, lemon oil, lavender oil and tea tree oil mixed with water. I spray it around my doors, my patio, my outside storage and myself and it seems quite effective at keeping out spiders, ants, roaches and mosquitoes. Just be really careful about dogs not getting into it or locking it off because it can be toxic….mainly the lemon oil, I think. I don’t have any mice, so I can’t help you there.

If you have mosquitoes, they most likely grew in your yard, or an adjoining one. Check regularly for anything that holds standing water. If there is none, look around your neighbors' yards, and you can usually find the source. If they grow in water you can't drain, there is a virus that only attacks mosquito larvae. Drop a pill of it in the water every few weeks. If you can encourage bats, or are lucky enough to be near running water -- where dragonflies spend their "nymph" days, then emerge as super mosquito fighter jets -- these are among the safest mosquito controls ever designed.

Gab3 - They may not be the solution to your bug issues, but all three of those can be a solution to a lot of personal ones. All three have therapeutic value, for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies. If you should ever feel unbalanced, just crushing a leaf of any of these and inhaling the aroma may prove useful. In the aromatherapy classes I took, no matter how many choices of oils you may have to chose from, the standard was: "When in doubt, use Lavender." It is calming and has a range of medicinal benefits. It is one of the many things I like about Seattle: Lavender everywhere!! Rosemary may be calming and uplifting at the same time, and has a range of benefits. Basil is one of the two most uplifting herbs I've ever encountered. I get a similar effect from crushing a basil leaf and inhaling the vapor as some cats get from catnip. All this to say, you have some nice herbs, there, bro. I like diatomaceous earth and ortho boric acid ("Roach-proof") for baseline control of insects in the home and garden. Regular borax and also baking soda can work well in some places. There are non-toxic bug traps and sticky strips. When all else fails, insect baits are my final insult to 6- and -legged creatures.

I take the time to sweep it into floor cracks and under wall gaps which takes care of any bug with a hard shell covering. Be sure to put a lot under and on top of your dish washers. The mint worked on an ant nest in one of my gardens plots. The nest was evacuated within 24 hours. I also found that the electronic sound boxes only stop the mice/rats from nesting nearby, it doesn't stop them from entering your property looking for food. The best way to rid the property of rodents is to remove all food stuffs such as bird seed, dog food left outside, compost boxes and put garbage in a sealed metal container not plastic. I live near a port city and rats are just part of the deal! Love my neighborhood cats ! 😁

Some good stuff here, nice to use natural methods where necessary. You got to remember that one application is not enough, you must be vigilant in your quest. I personally like some spiders in my home, when they get too much or are spotted by non arachnid lovers, I pick them up (try to get the male and female) and place them on my patio plants outside. They continue to do their thing with the visiting bugs. As for rodents, prevention is better than cure. Closely examine under eves and around pipes and ensure ALL holes are filled or stuffed with steel wool. Keep food well wrapped and sealed and check pantries regularly for incursions. I cleared all the mice using peanut butter in traps (I didn't like killing them, but it was freaking out everyone else). If they have no food or water source they cannot stay inside. As with spiders, ants do no harm so don't go crazy. If they are in my home, I just vacuum them up, simple.

Peppermint extract or Tea takes the place of the peppermint oil. You just add the extract to water in a spray bottle or brew some peppermint tea let it cool then pour into spray bottle. The only con is if you spray it outside, when it rains you need to reapply it. You could tear open some tea bags and sprinkle the loose tea and wet it & that lasts thru a couple rains.

The difference is that the wasps get into the feeders and can’t get out. I have two and hang them in the same areas as my Hummer feeders. You will be amazed at how many wasps will end up in there. No wasps in the attic for the last two years! I refresh the lavender scent near the window once per month. I hope it will work for the years to come. Had an outdoor cat that looked like he had is own cloud around him. Mosquitoes had bitten his ears and forehead so much he was loosing his fur. I didn't want to put anything on him like a spray or collar because he was an outside kitty and not really all that comfortable around anyone. I finally brewed up a VERY strong peppermint tea ( I think I used about 3 bags for the cup). I let it cool, then took it outside, got hold of him, and doused him with it until he was soaking wet. He took off like a shot and I didn't see him for a few days. I was concerned because I'd read that you shouldn't use peppermint oil on cats because it was toxic to some cats. I kept watching for him and he showed up several days later, without his cloud! He still looked a mess, but without all of the new bites, he was getting better! His fur grew back in and he became so loving, I brought him inside and I think he had a pretty nice life.

I fell in love with her and made her mine. unfortunately, she brought her "hubby" with her. but....We fed them all, I named my babygirl, Cleopatra and the Tom, Smokey. We waited for her to wean the kittens before getting her spayed....too late...2nd litter came fast. We found homes for ALL the kittens. Smokey got sick and died within 1 yr. He was fairly old when he found us. Cleopatra died last summer. Jun 15th, 2018. I miss her so much. anyway, I have catmint, spearmint, peppermint and chocolate mint all growing in a side flower bed. And...the only one I planted was the chocolate mint. On a warm day, the smell drifts over and sooths my soul. I love putting peppermint in my Earl Grey tea.

Doctors kept going round in circles from cancer to lymphatic system. Even after a skin graft, it came back. When she had her knee replacement they warned she may not have her leg when she woke up. White tails are known to eat other spiders so some people leave them alone. My favourite pest plant is penny royal, excellent for around stables and other animal enclosures. Not too much as to drown them but enough to entice. They cant resist and jump in the bowl but can't get out. The next day all you need to do is transfer them into another bowl with water and a drop of dishwashing liquid. Then Let them dry and find a new place to "rehome" them away from your home. Good luck!

This is how I keep my two dogs off furniture or areas I don't want them. When I am not home they would be everywhere. The spray at the store was so expensive, but you can make a mixture of orange essential oil and water and spray it on furniture like sofas, it never hurts my furniture but they can't stand it. Rubbing orange peel, outer side on furniture , not wood or plastic of course, also works. Essential oils are far less expensive online than at health food stores. And a good book on them gives you many recipes and good ideas for many uses. Orange oil also makes your home smell nice.
