Oooh I really appreciate these unique and refreshing recommendations, definitely not what I'd expected! I agree with the EotV one, and Jean-Francois matches Jezal in his haughtiness lololol. Some First Law readalike recs from me are Riven Earth by Zammar Ahmer, Deathless by Rob J. Hayes, The Hallows by HL Tinsley, and The Price of Power by Michael Michel!

Yeah I agree with you on Jezal and Jean-Francois haha. Good point! I’m going to check the ones I haven’t heard of out. HL Tinsley is an author I want to especially read.

'A City Dreaming' is trippy in the best possible way. It took me a little while to get used to the chapters being standalone episodes in the life of M with no overarching plot (mostly), but once I did it was so much fun! I'll definitely check out more books by the author.

Interesting list. 100% agree on Will of the Many, and I did enjoy both Chalion and The Company a ton. I guess this means I need to check out Polansky and Jay Kristoff now. Thanks for the recs!

You're welcome! I think you'll really enjoy Polansky! Not sure about Kristoff though, and to be clear, I think his other books are likely garbage based on what I've read. EotV seems to be the odd one out.

@@bookswithzara Agreed, that's actually why I haven't given EoTV a shot yet. Nothing else he's written seems that appealing to me. Really hoping that series will be the odd one out . . .

Daniel Polasnky! I must read that one, it does sound very interesting, and it's also quite short! I think I must read this one. And Bujold's book I honestly had not heard about him. Your conparison was quite compelling, I think I'll try to find more about the author. Thanks for sharing that, it's always great to find about new authors!

I love recommendation videos like this, as my personal 10/10 fantasy books are The Curse of Chalion, the First Law trilogy, Laini Taylor's Strange the Dreamer duology, and GG Kay's Sarantine Mosaic duology. (Though besides the genre, there's not a lot else in common between these particular books! It's more the quality of writing and characterization, and the interesting themes that are explored.)
@bookswithzara
@bookswithzara 4 месяца назад
Ahhh Josh, both of those are on my list! I'm hoping to read Sarantine Mosaic this year, for sure. I'm hoping to read Strange the Dreamer next year, which is thanks to you as I was originally not planning to read it!

Can also recommend “Conscience of the King” by Alfred Duggan (Historical Fiction about a Briton-Roman of Germanic descent who use the Anglo Saxon Conquest of Britain for his own list for power: Unscrupulous even against his own family and dark deadpan humor, with an Arthurian touch), Bernard Cornwell’s “Warlord” Trilogy (Arthurian Historical Fiction) & David Gemmell’s “Legend” (Heroic Fantasy)! Maybe also Lavie Tidhar’s “Anti-Matter of Britain” novels (Think the lovechild of Monty Python/Douglas Adams and Harlan Ellison: “By Force Alone”: King Arthur meets “The Omen”, “Stalker” & Guy Ritchie Gangster movies & “Hood”: Robin Hood meets “Breaking Bad”, “Apocalypse Now” & “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”!), Clark Ashton Smith’s “Zothique” short stories (excellent prose, mix of utter decadence and dread on a Bronze Age Tech Level Far Future Dying Earth) and Gustave Flaubert’s “Salammbo” (Historical Fiction set during a Mercenary Revolt in Carthage, decadent and brutal)!

I can always rely on you to give amazing recs! I think Abercrombie has mentioned he likes both Cornwell and Gemmell so it's unsurprising that you've mentioned them! Legend is a great rec, I do agree that there are some parallels to be drawn to Abercrombie's writing. I'm especially intrigued by Zothique, the Anti-Matter of Britain novels and Salammbo (which I have on my list from another video you mentioned this one on). As a matter of fact, I just got the ebook of Salammbo as I'm super intrigued! Thanks so much for the recs.
@MacScarfield
@MacScarfield 4 месяца назад
@@bookswithzara Yeah, the mix of grittiness and epic found in Heroic Fantasy and Military Historical Fiction is very fitting Abercrombie’s style. “Zotique” I think suits especially those that are fascinated by the Lore/Mythology of “The First Law” (such as the secret millennial long war between Bayaz and Khalul) and of course those that enjoy the dark humor of Glokta: Unlike his fellow “Weird Tales” alumni Lovecraft and RE Howard, CAS often can be very funny (though often VERY dark humor). Much the same with “Anti-Matter of Britain”, though with a grit and a determinist and critical view of those seeking power not unlike Abercrombie (maybe even harsher!). Salammbo” I mentioned because I feel that a lot of the characters there could have been in the Union Military (especially the Carthaginian Officers!) and the Mercenaries Matho the Libyan and Spendius could (being written in the 1860s) might be the Ur-Example of the “Barbarian and Rouge Duo” Trope found in much of S&S and later D&D: The physically mighty but often melancholic “Barbarian” Matho definitely is a literary ancestor of Logen Ninefingers in my book, while the “amorally entrepreneurial” and manipulative Spendius would not be out of place as a lieutenant of say Glokta, Bayaz or Cosca!

Chalion was just so good. Really reminded me of GGK but without the cringe sex and S&M humor. Do have Bastard's Paladin on shelf as it seems to be a continuation while the first three more stand alone in the same world.

Totally agree! Apparently the second one also functions decently as a standalone. I believe the main commonality is that we're following one of the characters of Chalion but that's about it. I could be wrong though!

Great video, Zara! I wouldn't say EotV is cheesy, I'd say cringe 😂 I think Kristoff is Australian. I do plan on getting back to EotV someday. I need to read more Parker because i adored Folding Knife so much, i am in a weird place with Fantasy right now, and pretty much only want to read standalones so maybe I'll restart The Hammer and The Company. Haven't read Curse of Chalion, but I'm reading Bujold's Shards of Honor and really enjoying it. I was in the mood for a short SF... unfortunately for me its part of a very long series 😅 Maybe if I like Shards of Honor I'll deviate and get Curse of Chalion. Humour wise I'd say Mark Lawrence's Red Queen's War is similar.

Thanks Rogue! I have no idea why I thought he was American hahahah. And you're right, cringe is definitely a more appropriate word. Read The Company first! I think you'd enjoy it more and there is no fantasy in it, so might help you get out of the slump. You are going to really like, and dare I say it, even love Curse of Chalion. I really need to read more Mark Lawrence. I think RQW is up next for me in terms of chronology.

Have you thought about reviewing FX’s TV adaptation of Shogun? I know you were underwhelmed by the book in your review of it, but I noticed your reply to a comment in that video that indicates you prefer this year’s TV adaptation to its source material.
