I suppose it depends on person to person? Not being American and interacting with Americans on the net, I feel most of the time Americans don't assume/consider something as sarcasm or look at a comment ironically. Usually there had to be indications of a comment/statement being sarcastic or ironic. But hey, if you personally like using irony, you'd use it. be it on the net or irl.
