5:32 Interestingly, a lead designer of the original X100 said in an interview that back when he was designing the X100, Fujifilm made the correct prediction that digital cameras would peak for utility and be eclipsed by smartphones for the average consumer. The way they would stand out from the powerhouse DSLR brands at the time would be to create cameras that were more than just their results - he designed the X100 after the rangefinder 35mm camera his father used to have. This then blossomed into the full lineup of Fuji X had now - yet he said that the X100 all the way up to the X100V would always be his "baby". The design philosophy for Fuji X was to incorporate the experience of using the camera alongside the actual results, and thus many of their designs harken back to the eye candy of the film world.

Pro tip: Fuji made a wide angle adapter for their old X70 that fits the thread of the X100 series. It gives you a slightly wider 26mm equivalent and is much cheaper than the X100 wide converter. It’s slightly larger in build but it’s a great option.

I haven't taken it out of my bag ever since! where ever I am going, the camera is going. even though I do not take it out sometimes, the convince of having a great camera in reach is always better than leaving it behind. and even though it isn't really suited for video, it does well as a quick shoot b camera for my type of work. thank you for the amazing visuals and the truly warm-hearted review that reignited my love for this camera.

I actually think it’s great for video (lost that section of this review because of a failure to hit record on my audio…). I’ve shot a lot of random things for my videos on the x100v when I’m to lazy to get the xt3 out haha. And now that you can use the ND for video it’s actually a pretty cool video camera too, with the same quality as the xt3/4 (minus 10bit and 400Mbps)

@@GxAce maybe because I am not used to the video quality out of it yet, I don't use it much for video. I do use my phone more for video, because it's easier and I do shoot a lot. So I just don't do that while running around the city. The 100 fits in my pocket fully and is safe to carry all day, as well as obviously just being such a no-brainer to use - you just enjoy the time and the world around you with it more. Big plus is an ability to be charged via the power bank. The x100 is my favorite camera not just because of how it makes me feel, but because of how it makes other people feel. The way people react when you point this at them as opposed to a dslr is by far its best quality. It just magically un-arms people allowing you to capture incredibly raw emotion. An astoundingly beautiful memory maker that you’ll no doubt cherish like a fine watch.

Switching from DSLRs to Mirrorless took me until this year to do. I've been shooting professionally for 20+ years and obviously that means I grew up on cameras with optical viewfinders. It wasn't until I tried Fuji's cameras that I felt like a company had finally made a mirrorless system that I could actually use comfortably. That novelty of an optical viewfinder does something to your brain that words really can't convey. There's something about physically looking through and actual lense optically vs a 2D screen that just clicks for me. The 100V was one of the first Fuji cameras I ever tried and I was basically sold on it instantly. Ironically, I have an XT4 and XE3 now, so I don't even have one with an optical viewfinder. But the 100V or Pro3 are probably going to be one of the next cameras I purchase. Fuji is really doing something incredible with their cameras and their new lenses are pushing the boundaries of what's possible with APS-C. Back when Sony first released their mirrorless systems, the fastest mirrorless lens you could get was like MAYBE f2.8. These days, and I think this is largely due to Fuji, you can get APS-C lenses at like f0.95. The argument against fast glass was mirrorless cameras had incredible low light performance. But Fuji recognized fast apertures were useful for more than just light gathering. Fuji feels like one of the few CAMERA companies left. Sony, Canon, and Nikon are more like tech companies these days. So yeah, the X100V is CERTAINLY a phenomenal camera and I really appreciate you covering it like this. People turn their noses up to fixed lens cameras because they're used to the convenience of zoom lenses or interchangeable systems. But I've gone the bulk of my career shooting on primes and using multiple bodies for different focal lengths. Having to physically engage with your subject to frame and compose properly vs just standing there and zooming almost always results in both a more statifsying experience and intelligently composed shot. The X100V is the perfect starter camera. Excellent video dude.

The x100 platform is perfect for those who enjoy the act of taking a photograph, every time I use it it feels like an occasion. "This should be your first camera as a photographer." *shows a camera that's completely out of stock, difficult to learn for beginners, and costs two THOUSAND dollars in the used market.* Totally in the same vein as tech "influencers" telling us we should get four figure Macbooks for schoolwork. Utter insanity. If you're starting out in photography, don't fucking bankrupt yourself and don't be misled into thinking this is a rich man's hobby, because it's not. Get a used 100-200 dollar DSLR off of eBay with some affordable lenses from 10-20 years ago and you will learn the ebb and flow of photography and your own feelings with it much, much better. Spending 2k on a camera forces you to feel guilty about not using it even when realistically you won't be starting out doing gigs every other day, and then ending up not taking photos at all because of the pressure you put on yourself. This camera "influencer" is talented and he waxes lyrical poetry about cameras which makes my heart move, but use your head and you will realise but this is not sound advice, either financially or creatively, for beginners.

Waiting VERY patiently, I just bought my x100v 2 weeks ago. I was worried about it being too overhyped - and were my expectations blown out the water. The technological advances with CMOS sensors goes to show that in this day and age, you really don't need a full frame sensor. I was a big fan of the original 5D sensor and the way it rendered colors + its 100% coverage, but the x100v truly rivals it. You really hit home with explaining how the x100v urges one to take it out and capture moments, because it just makes almost every image so rewarding and satisfying with your end results It really has reignited my love for photography (which I was scared would never return) and I can't wait for a year of capturing moments on a digital camera, that really is the closest thing to film P.S - Your youtube videos are just out of this world in terms of production & narrative, and I hope you can continue to bless all of us with your passion.

"The best camera is the one you have with you". But if you REALLY want to be a photographer, you should get the camera this guy has a love affair with. What kind of contradictory crap is this? Ever seen DigitalRev's video series called: Pro Photographer Cheap Camera Challenge? Creative mindset of the photographer and interesting subject trump all in making a great photograph. So throw away this nonsense of creativity being dictated by tools; it screws you over as a photographer.

@stephanscharf5524
@stephanscharf5524 2 года назад
I do both. It depends on the purpose and the situation. But you are right. No film simulation is able to create the look film has. I shoot 3 or 4 rolls of film in a year. These minimal costs for film and developing are better invested than in a gear that costs more than 1000€. Just my personal view on that… My digital camera is a Fuji Xpro 1. The reason the 33mm converter lens is so huge is that it maintains the f2 aperture. It also shows you nicely, how a 23mm f1.4 would look like, sizewise ;)
@GxAce
@GxAce 2 года назад
I bet they could get a 23 1.4 a bit smaller than that. I think the size is more a result of it attaching to a wider angle lens than it being f2. The xf 35mm f2 has a much smaller front element.

I have been pretty scared of the buy in on fixed lens cameras since my X70 got a few chunks of dust in the sensor. Annoyingly, I use filters to contain the focusing mechanism to avoid it, but it didn't matter. It's all that keeps me from considering a GR or X100 also. Luckily, if you are photo oriented you can get a M200 with the 22f2 from canon for like a third of the price. If you need a mic in, the m6 is the way to go, and both of them are smaller than the X100. ✌️
@GxAce

Oh! Yeah that could definitely make someone scared to pick up a fixed lens camera. The x100 is weather sealed at least so perhaps it’s a bit better at keeping out dust. Those canon cameras could be a great option too!

I agree so much with this. The Fujifilm''s OVF works so well, because it allows you to pre-visualise from reality itself, the same as any traditional rangefinder allows. It's the coolest thing Fujifilm have done. The hidden back on the Xpro 3 is the second coolest thing. I have an Xpro1 and I never use the screen unless I'm adjusting menus, it's just not necessary.

My first digital camera was a Fujifilm MX-2900. It shot a whopping 2.3 Megapixels and I loved it. It was basically a point and shoot. But with a hotshot on top you were able to use professional flashes with it or hook it up to pro lighting set ups. The cons to it were that it had a fixed ISO of 120 and you could choose f4 or f8 as your f stops. It also zoomed in to 3X zoom. It was a great first digital. A other con was it had a dedicated battery that didn't last long so I always had a spare on hand a d it also took the now defunct Smart Media memory card.

I have been using a X100v since this video was released. So about 8 months now, and it really is a great first camera. The physical dials and compact nature of the camera, is fun for experimenting. However there are some quirks. I think it’s inevitable that people will eventually get a new camera, once their fist camera dies or just isn’t to preference. Especially for new photographers. And the x100v has been excellent for allowing me to figure out my preferences. So here is what I learned. I don’t think the price is good for beginners. It would probably be better to get an x100f. Because the expense has always been looming over my head. The camera also gets pretty warm, and overheats when recording longer videos, or multiple clips. The screen can also break even with a screen protector, so it’s better to store it in a proper bag. But it’s an easy fix, if you can find a new screen. But all of my experiences, have allowed me to slowly approach photography in a proper way. The price is high, but I would have wasted a lot more money, buying a bunch of interchangeable lenses that I probably wouldn’t have used. Followed by properly learning to keep the camera safe and being more aware of surroundings. However I will probably sell my x100v now that I know what I want. I want to “downgrade” to a XT-1 with the Zeis Touit 35mm that GxAce also made a review on. I prefer taking stills, and want something larger that feels more secure in my hands. And the price for both the camera and lens used, feels reasonable enough to carry around regularly. And if I ever needed to, I could rent big lenses for specific trips. Or record long videos on my phone. Overall, I enjoyed my time with the x100v. And thanks a lot GxAce for making amazing reviews!

I may have agreed with you until I bought my current camera. TBH I haven't actually used the 100V but until a couple of months ago my main camera was the Fuji X-T3 which I absolutely adored. And I'm assuming the images it creates are pretty much the same. I needed a body that could accept interchangeable lenses and stuck with the 35mm mostly as I like 50mm FF. The way the X-T3 is laid out is brilliant and as I always shoot manually having all the dials on the top was great. It was a joy to use. And I liked the images even though it's APS-C and I usually need to crop. However, I then tried a Leica SL with a Voigtlander manual lens and I finally understood what all the Leica hype was about. The difference between the two cameras was palpable. I kept both cameras for around a month to compare the images, sometimes using the Voigtlander on the Fuji too but finally it was a no brainer for me to sell the Fuji. The Leica simply blew the Fuji out of the water with regards to the 'character' of the images it produced. I don't require digitally perfect images and if I did I'd probably go for a Sony. The Voigtlander is not perfectly sharp but the combination of the SL and the Voigt create luscious images with great depth of character that I just couldn't get with the Fuji/Voigt combo, even using all my emulation software (and I have it all). In many ways I was sad to see the X-T3 go as it was a joy to use but then so is the SL in most ways but as far as the images it creates it just can't compete with the Leica. Try one for a week.
@GxAce

While I absolutely love my Leica m lenses and it sucks that I can’t play with them on the x100v, to me the color from the Fuji is 1,000 times better than my m9. The m9 is fine and the colors are true to life, but I prefer to add a “look” to my images and the x100v gives me that in camera and I don’t need to edit the photos later. I have not tried the SL2 before but I would love to! To me though, fuji has easily the best color straight out of camera. If they just made a full frame xpro4 I would sell my m9 haha

Fantastic video! I love the retro sci-fi setting. It feels like I'm watching a photography video in Blade Runner or Star Wars! I bought my X100V 8 months ago not long after watching one of your earlier videos and have barely touched my XT2 and accompanying lenses since. It truly is the perfect companion camera and rarely do I leave the house without it. I do have to disagree with your suggestions for future models. I personally love the current screen and fear an f1.4 lens would make the camera too large. My hope is whatever comes next will have IBIS capable of at least 3 stops. That camera would maybe be the last I ever buy. One question about filters, I loved your video on glimmerglass and I'm curious to know if you've tried Moment's cinebloom filter?

Thanks so much! I’m glad you dig the style hahah. Fair enough! I know a lot of people really don’t like that screen, but It still lets you shoot from the hip which is the only reason I use the tilt screen anyway and I think it just makes the camera look really cool too. I wish they would let lenses have a bit of character and not be so obsessed with perfect optics, this way they could have a faster lens that isn’t huge. I have not tried the cinebloom filters but from what I’ve seen I don’t think I would like them much. They are way too “dream sequence” for me.
