You couldn’t even buy the fabric for 200 much less cover labor for that amount. I have no idea what people think when they find insane listings like that.
@kristinedoty7876
@kristinedoty7876 9 месяцев назад
In the back of their minds they know that Western economies are benefitting from the relatively cheaper labor costs of Asian and South East Asian countries. In the misty glow of their imaginations, not only could they possibly absorb maybe a little glamour from these gowns, but maybe, just maybe it might all be true. Additionally, most people rarely shop for elegant evening wear on a daily basis, so pricing is a vague factor when you are looking for that once in a lifetime dress. Throw in the fact that ready-to-wear is so limited in sizing and choice for other than average body types. That said, I have seen some pieces from some sites that have been unbelievably well made and ridiculously priced, go figure!

I also think people don’t realize how expensive it can be to make one dress or outfit… I’ve made a few dresses and basically the starting amount is like $200 unless you’re getting thrifted fabrics

People don't realise just how much fabric you need. It's just like knitting/crochet where most think you can do a full sweater with a single skein. Only once you've made something you realise just how much is required to make a full piece. Plus they don't even know material costs and think you'd maybe pay 20 to 50 max. The only way to fix that lack of knowledge would be to make a life skills course in school mandatory or something where you have a project to make an item.

Yes thank you! As a dressmaker I see this all the time! People wanting haute couture or avant-garde dresses at Walmart prices and then get mad when it's not what they received in the mail, what do you expect!? That kind of craftsmanship takes a lot of time and not to mention the cost of fabric, beading or embellishments. If you want to look like a work of art you got to be willing to pay that price.

@linkinlady06
@linkinlady06 9 месяцев назад
@@leahowlett5525 Certainly!! After college (please know you don't need a degree to become a dressmaker a career diploma/ certificate can help build your skills just as much if not more!) I did some alteration work for about a year at a local tailor shop in my city and that helped with building clientele but in 2017 I started my own business which in the beginning was easy to do as far as getting a business permit for a LLC and a Sales and Use certificate. Once you have those things there are so many routes you can take as far as becoming a dressmaker, in my case evening/formal wear is my specialty and something I made my money doing since high school. It first started with just doing commissions and that help build my clientele even more and my manager at the tailor shop loved what I was doing so now we're partners and I've been doing it ever since. If there is anything else you would like to know I'll be happy to answer all your questions :)
@alexisarrizon6083
@alexisarrizon6083 9 месяцев назад
I totally agree with this. I'm a men's tailor by trade/pattern maker and I see people come to me all the time and they want these ridiculous alterations on these hideously cheap garments they shelled out $200 or $300 for and I usually will recommend a relatively economical remedy for their atrocious garment. Better yet I offered to custom make them custom-made pieces that are tailored to their body with high-quality fabrics for a slightly higher price but I try to keep my pricing fair as possible for labor and material. I've worked for many years in fashion industry and I can tell you it's amazing how people will shell out money for garbage for clothing but they purchase on the internet but they will complain till the cows come home about having something that is bespoke in high quality made just for them.

That is the main thing I never can understand. They have just seen some photos from the website, and that beautiful dress, which they wanted & bought…. But even though they claimed to have bought the dress in their own size, I really don’t understand why they actually believe that the dress yet will look just as amazing on them (that had to buy the dress in a size that’s about 10 times bigger than the size of the dress on the photos)! Bc when looking at the photos, that same dress fitted perfectly, but on a very small/slim woman/model that isn’t near as big as the women that order the same dress. And how can any tight dress that contours your body even more, then look just as good on you, when you already know that you only seen an extremely small woman wearing that dress? So please, at least be honest to yourself & admit which size YOU really have & had to order that dress in. Bc we all know how different a dress will look like on a woman in size XXS compared to a woman in size XXXXL 😟 So when the dress finally arrives & they can’t even fit into the dress & don’t even seem to understand why…. Please, admit the truth instead of continuing to pretend. And especially if it was one of these very cheap dresses bought from one of the many cheap China websites, which only sell fake copies of every single item they sell, including a beautiful dress that only costed you so few $ that it wouldn’t even pay for the used fabric in reality. And then these women never seem to understand that those Asian made dresses never are true to size either. So why even order a dress that looks gorgeous on a very slim & fit “model” (& of course they also used photoshop to make the dress on the photos looking even better), bc if they haven’t stolen the photos too, the dress wouldn’t look like the beautiful dress they claim they sell. And we all know it’s IMPOSSIBLE to buy such gorgeous dress for so few $ & yet… WHY?!! 😭😔😟

This is the culture in China, it's normal there. You would buy something like this with the understanding that you wouldn't be getting the exact item in the picture, but an imitation. However, the culture in the US is different.

My grand-aunt used to sew the embellishments and embroidery for Dolce&Gabbana wedding gowns at some point, I also know a family friend who does some of the most complex stitching for Max&Co coats (outside of pockets, decorative hems). They only receive the exact quantity of thread, needles and pearls/sequins that has to go on the garment, not one more or one less. The sole fact that this kind of work has to be done by hand by experts that the brands go searching for all over Italy (I don't know about other places in the world) should be enough to understand that you can't get the same for a tenth of that price. If you want to spend less, just look for simpler pieces, less constructed, less sculptural ones because that is mostly what's increasing the price, most of those things can't be done by machines and require really good fabric.

Trouble is people have absolutely no clue about the cost of top quality, or even mid quality fabric, let alone low quality, or the amount of time it takes to put together a simple garment by hand (and I'm talking with a sewing machine too). I made a replica gown for my own use of the ball gown from the labyrinth. When I first made it I showed it off to the store I got it from, because they too make gowns to sell and they said I could get £2,500 for it, unworn. I was harassed by someone who followed my page because I was asking for half that, when they asked me to make them the gown. Cost me 300 pounds just for the materials. Took three months of 2 hours weekday evenings, 8 hours per day each weekend to make the gown. They refused to pay more than 100 for what they wanted. I did sell my gown in the end, when I was short of cash. I only got 300 for it, but it has been worn. So at least I made the money back 😂
@valkyriesardo278
@valkyriesardo278 8 месяцев назад
That is an issue also. People don't know the difference in quality between mass produced garments and skilled home made. They expect to pay less than retail. Or they want to pay even less for alterations that will turn a sow's ear into a silk purse for a figure that is well outside the range of average proportions. My mother made costumes for community theatre. When that no longer pleased her, she switched to doll clothes for the very popular "American Girl" dolls. These she sold at the local Christmas Fair and they would go like hot cakes. The mothers quickly learned what she made would come out of a washing machine looking good as new. You might want to think about doll clothes if you need to supplement your funds.

After complaining that a fast fashion site stole her design, a Latina designer got a lot of hate. Ppl thought that charging 500 for a "simple dress, clearly made from a pattern." It was a hand-made silk organza of her own design. If something, it was a real deal. This is the problem with these sites. Ppl think they deserve those dresses for 175. They're not worth that. Even with slave labor.
@corvidaegudmund1186

I swear fast fashion like box store dresses makes people forget how much half-way-decent fabric costs, never mind labor and any other decorative touches. The moment I see the word “silk” listed under the fabrics I know it’s going to be an expensive piece. The only silk anything you’d find for around 200 would probably be a very simple shirt or jacket made of the cheapest silk….and that’s a huge “maybe”.

I make custom stage costumes (mainly burlesque) and evening wear. Most of my business is within the community and they understand the cost of a custom piece. I do sell on some sites, though, where I clearly list the examples show are only the deposit + 10% estimated cost in both the title and description. None the less a few times a year (usually close to Halloween) I get people thinking they can get the whole thing for basically the cost of the supplies and then throw a fit at me about my prices. I'm never rude to them when explaining my pricing, but they will say things like "how do you expect to make money if no one can afford to buy it"... well Martha I've been doing this 20+ years and while I'm not rich I do just fine without your business and getting fairly paid.

@@corvidaegudmund1186YOU HIT IT RIGHT ON THE NAIL. Places like Shein, fashion nova kinda ruined it for everyone involved: seamstresses/designers AND customers alike. The former can't get work anymore and get their work ripped off and the latter gets crappy quality while single-handedly financing child and slave labor.

Can we say $100-200 A YARD..... and I can use a lot of fabric, especially bridal gowns (20-25 yards for a ballroom gown is not unheard of). I once used over 400 peacock feathers for adornment that had to be handstitched on. The feathers alone were over $500. Yes, I am a professional, and yes, they are going to pay out the nose for my time. It is the almost 4 decades of experience I bring to the table that they are paying for. I have industrial machines and each of those were out-of-pocket, but my clients know my work is high quality.

Good for you! Similar, I thrift, alter, and sew. But the point here is that nowadays $100 is the starting point for something decent new. Even Goodwill wedding gowns are $75 now. Those pictures are of couture $500-1,000+ dresses, so if you are paying $100-150 that is absolutely not what you are going to get.
