💚 I really appreciate this video. I would easily miss that tiny bit of black stuff if it appeared on one of my plants. It's certainly not as obvious as the ****ing mealybugs that I'm constantly fighting. 🌹Thank you from Portland, Oregon for all your awesome work!
Yeah, I got an order last week from Etsy and one of the cuttings with a regular size leaf had large full size scale all over the top and bottom. It was a 2 day delivery and they actually sent it to me that way!!! It was more than easy to see.
The artist behind those serpentine mines are most positively not your friendly neighbour thrip. It's a typical symptom left by leaf miners. The culprit is a fly belonging to Agromyzidae which lays eggs on the leaf surface. The larvae hatches and feeds inside the leaf, leaving serpentine tunnel-like structures on the outside. They are common pests of tomato, brinjal, mums, etc, i.e., basically most garden crops. May be controlled by isolating the affected plant for preventing further spread & applying them with neem oil or chill garlic emulsion with soap. BONUS: This can help manage thrips as well! Please post updates.
Keep in mind that's only one of the many varieties of thrips that he showed. The western flower and onion thrips are slender and harder to see, especially the lighter coloured ones.
No, you can also see some yellowing on the leaves very similar to spider mites. Another sign is if you see any damage or deformed new leaves. That is a clear indication that you have thrips
After twp years of spending enormous amounts of time and money (neither of which I have much of), quaranting, preventative dpraying, spacing out, checking daily….several of my plants have thrips. So angry. I just tossed about 10 beautiful plants and I treated about 40. I gave three in my bathrub but I live in a small space. When I think I ve soured with the lot, I see another in the garden centre and well , acquiring plants are so addictive. Sure many can relate. I’m not great at compromising with pests but I found appreciate your calming, words of planty wisdom.
@@EverythingPlants well. Jeff. They sell the yellow sticky traps to put in the plants. Sprays and insecticidal soap. But I find that over watering is also a pest magnet . Your 100%. Correct 😂. It comes with owning plants.
I have never known what to look for when thrips were mentioned in all my reading. I know it sounds crazy, but it's true. This short video gave me all the info I needed. If you saw just how many plants I have with no thrips in 5 years, you'd be shocked. I have lost a few plants to overwatering, but maybe they died from thrips?
