The less experience you have the more distance you need to keep your mistakes from impacting other pilots. Learning to take off and land by having close calls with the ground might be an acceptable risk but its NEVER ok to gain experience by flying close to others in the sky. What craig is saying is if you have less than a solid year of experience (less than 100-150 flights stay the heck away from crowded sites. Find somewhere to fly that has no more than a couple of other people in the vicinity. Dont learn at the expense of other people's safety.

Interesting video, I wasn't aware of the divergence in rules. Just as a note: although overtaking on the ridge isn't named explicitly, there are some europe wide rules promoted by the EHPU and some cumpulsory rules in SERA -which explicitly allows overtaking on the left for gliders-.

This is exactly why I love Porterville in December. 7m/s climbs straight from take off, no ridge rules.

Thank you for adding that last part. I'm always super tense if someone overtakes me for exactly this reason, wondering why they bother to do it with 3 or 4 kmh more speed. That being said I think I have never been overtaken on my left hand side, always from the right side, by pilots of different nations. I think it comes down to bad habit.

Same rule also applies in Denmark. Last week during dune soaring, a German pilot clipped my wingtip with his, when we were passing each other in opposite directions. His wing overlapped my wing with about half a meter (1½ feet). We both stayed in the air - but it was a scary situation. I had the dunes on my right, he had the dunes on his left. As you state, the rules says that the pilot who has the dunes on his right, has the "right of way". I couldn't fly closer to the dunes, which means the passing pilot with dunes un his left has to give way, and fly further out. Just as the situation at 1:21 where the three passing pilots make plenty of space for you 👍 Somehow a lot of visiting German pilots seem to not understand the rules for both overtaking, and right-of-way rules when dune soaring. I dont know if it's an "ego thing" that makes some pilots not willing to fly out from the ridge and thereby "loosing face" by having to land on the beach. Even when there is plenty of beach to land on, and perfect condition for bottom/beach launch, some pilots focus more on staying in the lift than focusing on safety and good airmanship.

Scary Experience glad you managed to stay in the air. As it is in Hotels with Sunbeds and on Car-Highways - around Germans you need to be extra cautious... Every Summer we have a lot of visiting Pilots from Germany in Interlaken (where I live) and its mindboggling how they just don't care and think whatever the DHV is uttering is the truth and everybody else will also follow that. I for myself always expect that all the Other Paragliders are Blind and Deaf and try to stay on the safe side always - even if it means that I have to land earlier than expected.

I see this also happening a lot here in the Netherlands. Not only Germans, but in general. To me it looks more that people are mainly focused on themselves but not really paying attention to what happens around them. Same with applying heavy brakes in front of someone which creates this ‘nice’ turbulence. But I don’t think pilots do this on purpose, they are just not aware

Good Advice Greg : Keep Looking : Expect someone not to follow the rules : Do what you have to do to avoid a mid air no matter what the rule. You can be right but don't be dead right. Most common error, not being able to tell Left from Right.? Use your voice to alert others especially if behind them but do not shout, this causes panic. Fly like everyone is an idiot especially yourself.

I humbly disagree. I miss a comment that overtaking on the inside is dangerous for the overtaker even more. If slower glider decides to go closer to ridge when he feels he needs more altitutde (and he will not be aware of overtaking maneuver until last seconds), it will create a really complicated situation. When passing from outside, the overtaking pilot can still turn with the pilot in front, or if there is enough time/space move closer to ridge to avoid him easily and continue. Opposing gliders should not be a problem because the pilot should not turn if there are any, the same applies for the overtaker. In video you are above the ridge but in real situations problems usually appears when people are bellow the ridge and fight for lift vs. bombout starts. The comment of turbulence is also little misleading, because if pilot overtakes from inside, the turbulence effect will not dissapear, just influence the other pilot which is not mentioned. However thanks for highlighting this topic. A lot of pilots think their local rules applies everywhere.

and your understanding of the rule is actually what the french regulation is stating... Believing one is smarter than the long established rules is in most cases a dangerous slope.

In my profesional opinion (based on many thousands of hours airtime flying in the UK) the BIGGEST 'rules' safety issue in aviation is when when pilots are 'instructed' that International aviation standard, long accepted safety rules 'don't apply to us'..... In the UK the result of PG'ers NOT applying the established aviation (and nautical) rules HAS resulted in many times significant 'negative' concequences ;-( So to stay safe: It's simple if you are the 'overtaking aircraft' for safety sake either move well clear or ONLY overtake on the right as per Standard Aviation Practice!!! If you can't follow the rules then DON'T overtake (on either side)

I always ridge soar with the pilot in front might suddenly turn at any time. With my slow wings overtaking isn't a problem, but i hate when someone slightly above overtakes me directly above. For them judging their clearance is easy, for me looking up looks like they may have done a foot drag up my wing!

And I agree, best avoid overtaking altogether. What might help with that.....especially on ridges with a narrow lift band....is to not slow your glider unnecessarily and thereby forcing others behind you to overtake or slow down ( beyond their gliders ability). I have the impression that most current glider designs have a very low sink rate at trim speed ( hands up).... the times where you had to slow down to get lowest sink might be over ?.... I think it would be interresting to have a look at the aerodynamic design of popular gliders of the last say 8-10 years or so. If more pilots know about that, they might brake less and give us all more speed to work with ;-) ( keep separation ). I'm curious what experienced pilots opinion is on this ?

I like your videos, Greg, but you cannot generalize the recommendations of UK. In France you must not overtake to the left, in Germany only if overtaking to the right is not possible. In fact this should be harmonized. Always fly safe and keep distance!

Soaring with lots of regular gliders on my comp gear is quite annoying because these gliders are just faster. Sometimes it feels like almost killing the glider when I have to break that much .. :-P

I had a little crash some time ago. This happened: On a dune while soaring i had the dune on my right, I was flying downwind as it was 45 degrees crosswind and light, So i had about 2-3m above the dune, Which was covered in bushes full of glider killer thorns😬 Approaching in front of me was a pilot which was on the brakes the whole time. Which would mean if i would let him pass me, I would for sure drop out into the thorny bushes because of the wing vortex he produces. (Which is also an unwritten rule to not do) He got taken over on the right too. So i choose to steer the wing around fast. But because in that moment he also steered outwards, Pushing the overtaking pilot out too, I had to pull so much brake that my glider went negative, Planting me into the dune. I fell on my airbag in sand so i was fine. But i was far from happy because it could have been a broken back instead. In my mind, This is how it should have gone: Pilot approaching me could have steered a bit left towards the dune so i could have made my full turn. The overtaking pilot could have steered a bit right (and even brake if needed) while still staying in the lift band, And we would all be flying happilly ever after.😂 P.S. Because they were coming upwind they had much more control, height and lift than me, As i was flying downwind. This should be taken in consideration too. There is much more to this game than the basic rules. And i was beïng very clear in my move as i threw the glider around very sharp.

Thats why I don't go to the dune, I don't like spending 90% of my flying time thinking who has priority, guessing what the next idiot is going to do, keeping track of who is the dangerous guy who doesn't give space... Much rather be on a cliff site with only my friends.
@edwinlooy6551
@edwinlooy6551 Год назад
@@niconico3907, Most of the time it's fine while a lot of people over here get teached well and also fly at the dunes a lot. It's a lot of common sense flying mostly. But sometimes you get a new pilot or some tourist who doesn't know how which makes it more dangerous. And this particular site is pretty small, Which also makes space limited. A learning experience for me too, To observe other pilots even more in advance to see what kind of experience they have, What they are up to and to anticipate even earlier maybe. Tho these kind of pilots make it almost impossible to stay airborne😅

I've been pinned to the ridge, and forced out of litt or uncomfortably close to it by other pilots too many times. What's worse it rarely happens for real overtaking attempts, most of the time it's just clueless and selfish pilots fly along, not realizing they are blocking someone. If you sqeeze someone between yourself and the ridge, you're doing something WRONG.
