If You Shorten Your Ready to Wear Shoulder, Does the Sleeve Need to be Adjusted too?

This answered my questions perfectly! I prefer men's cut shirts but they are too big for both my shoulders and upper arms. These videos have been a lifesaver.

So what happened is that, right after you wrote me back, I went ahead and took the sleeve off, cut back the shoulder seam and was able to reattach the sleeve without altering it. The shirt came out pretty great...still a bit over the shoulder but much improved. Next time, I’ll try your way. I will have the issue again, no doubt about it so I do appreciate your wisdom about this and thank you very much for your work. ❤️Nancy

Hi! Great tutorial. Would this also work for a coat? I'm making a japonese jacket and I find that the shoulder is at lease half an inch too wide....

Yes it will... You can use this method to shorten any shoulder seam! Thanks for watching

Would it work to shorten the side seam of the shirt instead of adjusting the sleeve?

That’s a great question! Adjusting the sleeve makes the cap longer so it will agree with the longer armhole. Shortening the side seam (by scooping the armhole lower) actually makes the armhole even longer.

Hat about raising the shoulder to heighten the neck is that possible? I have two T-shirts that the neck is very low and I have lots of extra fabric n shoulder

So sorry for the delay in responding to you. You can take the shoulder seams apart and trim off the extra length at the neckline side of the shoulder seam. Then sew back together with the front shoulder seam. This will pick up the back neckline without affecting the armhole. Hope this helps

it would be nice if you worked in larger increments .like 2 inches off the shoulder, so we can see you master fitting back a sleeve that ends up too small. (thanks anyhow)

There are limits to how much you can shorten the shoulder without distorting the shape of the armhole too much. If you need to take 2" off the end of the shoulder, chances are you're wearing a size that's too big for you.
