I've been riding a seaside ever since they came out and it's the only board that's still in my quiver which is a testament to its design. Over 30 board have come and gone over the past couple decades but this one is a keeper.
Thanks Doctor 👨⚕️. 🙏🏾 Wish I had my 5’8 still though. I’ve let go of a lot of seasides due to bills. Thankfully there’s always a good deal on Craigslist 🤙🏾
Surfed since a preteen until now in my mid 50s, as you get older the best thing you can do is buy boards from shapers that you can talk to and who can adjust the dimensions of their boards to your needs. Don't ride fish too long just to gain volume, especially in your 40s when aging isn't that great of a factor for most. Obese then you got to but usually just going up in thickness incrementally with adjustments to width will get you the best fit for your best performance. In your 50s you notice things slowing down, so you'll start going up in size faster to fit how you can surf more than how you want to surf.
I’m knocking on the door to 50 but hoping to stay in the 5’10 - 5’8 range for the next 10 yrs or more. Going to be picking up a 5’9 board soon. Stay tuned 🤙🏾
@@surfininmy40s Nice review! Just wondering, what size would you recommend for a first shortboard in a Seaside. I’m 6’0”, 165-175lbs, late50s, Low_to_Mid_Intermediate surfing skill level. I tried a 7’ Seaside & Beyond in Costa Rica a few times and liked it.
Glad you’re havin fun on the seaside! I’m 175/180 ride the 5-8 and I wish I had gotten a 5-7 for those wondering about size. But I didn’t really click with the board until I started playing with fins. Found it was super fast down the line but for steeper takeoffs on head high to overhead conditions super slippery down the face. Swapped to the Tomo hatchet fins and the board changed so much it’s insane. Definitely worth giving a shot!!
Futures controllers are great for when you're pushing the board in more powerful surf. The Machado quads are great for chest and under, but for shoulder and up, try some controllers. These fins allowed me to push my 5'6 in 6ft hurricane swell last year.
I agree with you, i'm 52 5'11 165 love my 5'6 seaside in all types of conditions, boards a throttle, But agree also with the fella further down to keep that fitness level up, I still travel alot ride 31L pin tails. Will be day I gotta stop but not for a while hopefullly
Awesome. I wish I could ride those smaller boards like you guys but I can’t. I’m at 175 lbs and workout reg. I need a 33-35 L board. Plus I didn’t surf until 40 and I think it’s easier to ride the smaller boards if you’ve been doing it all your life. My hats off to you older groms who can shred on those tiny boards. I think the title of the vlog should’ve been “if you just started surfing in your 40’s then you must have a seaside.” 😉
Looks like you had the hex expander traction on one of the shorter ones. Been thinking of trying it out myself - would be interesting to know how it felt for you in terms of paddling as well as riding?
Yea true that. I have the older style seaside currently and it’s not too bad for now. I think they’ve done that on purpose so that riders will continually get new ones 😬. FireWire is always nice to have because they are such good boards and if you need to sell it they maintain their value.
@@surfininmy40s I use to have a mash up was a fun board to but if it gets steep the nose would catch didn't enjoy it as much but I guess you would go to a performance short board in those conditions. I prefer the great white over the mash up for me
Great review! I've been between this and the sweet potato for Florida surf. Would you say the 5'11 or 6'0 for me I'm 6'2 195lbs kinda bored with longboarding and haven't shortboarded in a while other than occasional funshape.
@@surfininmy40s thanks hoping to pick one up soon at my local surf shop. I was set on the sweet potato but the guy suggested the seaside as they also have it in stock vs having to order the other board. Might give it a try and check back with ya! 🤙🏽
@@surfininmy40s Im riding the 5'7 for small waist high waves as a twin. I use the AM Keels when the waves are better I use a different board. I find that you have to flow with it and not force it like a shortboard. But it's messing up my shortboard game because because Im getting front foot heavy. So when I get back on a proper SB I'm digging my nose...so I'm rethinking my quiver...stay with this or shortboard ...maybe Sci-Fi2.0 is a happy medium. The volcanic Sci-fi is really good on Small days
@@surfininmy40s It’s a LSD - The Tex 6’4 45 ltr. It’s my go to board and great. But think a seaside might perform better. The Tex is hard to duck dive bigger waves.
Honestly , board would draw out turns too much and make it difficult to get vertical top to bottom. Great for going straight though. Or as mentioned, doing a real drawn out carve.
It has its downsides. Also sometimes it’s too fast 💨. For the most part it’s just a super fun board 🤙🏾 . I have friends who bust airs on their seasides but they ride a 5’5. The 5’7 definitely felt more performance. It didn’t feel like a fish. The shorter you go, the more you can go top to bottom
@@surfininmy40s Nice , going to be 48 soon and really trying to stay progressive bad hip and all. Glad we are still fighting the fight. Check out Noa Salas , a true inspiration for us.
Sorry bro, I'm 47 and still rippin reefbreaks . I dont need that board. Its not a matter of age but of fitness. Im 85kg and manage a 28 lit. 5'8 rocket 9.
My hats off to ya 🤙🏾. Pls keep in mind though I’ve got other boards that are smaller with less liters. The seaside is my fun board when I’m feeling run down or when the waves are mushy. I use a smaller board when it’s pumping.
Yeah bro, dudes crutch too hard sometimes and don't push or take care of themselves 54 510 185, reconstructed shoulder, bad knee, weak beachbreak custom 5'9x 20 1/4 x 2 5/8 x 35.0, at 47 on a less rockered fish 5'6 x 20 1/8 x 2 7/16 & at 40, 5'6x20 1/8x2 5/16 same model but 180. Shortboards 54 31-33L 47 30 -31.5L 40 29-31 L. You get better and stay better with exercise and the right size board
You must not have ever ridden one. I had my doubts, but it is easily the funnest board I've ever owned. I find it hard to take anything else out these days.
Always wanted to try a hypto but never got a chance to own one. I will say the hypto dims for me don’t look they would work for me. Seaside gives you a little bit more foam and better for paddling for me at my age.
Seaside is much faster and more playful. It has a much better lower end than the hypto. In punchy beach breaks you're going to love riding the seaside but it's really at home in 2-4ft surf. However, if your waves are not as steep (or your surfing at high tide) you can push it in overhead surf with the right fins. The hypto for me never worked well in small stuff. It comes alive in chest high and up though. If you size it right you can push it to a foot or two overhead which is the max I've ridden one. Sick board but it seems to need a punchy wave.
