You two have gotten back to adding crime fiction to my reading mix. I hadn't read a crime book in over 20 years until you sold me on In A Lonely Place. Just finished this book and now need to read all of Jim Thompson's back catalogue.
I remember when you said about Elric how Moorcock got away with a lot because fantasy was considered a pulpy and trashy genre back then, and you could get away with a lot more. I view Jim Thompson in a similar light. I've only read The Killer Inside Me from him, but I was shocked by his rather frank depictions of childhood molestation and trauma from that, sadomasochism, and sociopathy. But Thompson's a really good writer though, much better than even I initially thought he might be. Great video guys.
Jim Thompson and Richard Stark are my go to for a fix of the hardest of hard boiled. Thompson's The Getaway, which the old movie is based on, is excellent and has a very different and more unsettling end.
@@storytoob I only discovered a while back that Jim Thompson also wrote the screenplay for the McQueen/MacGraw movie. He also did screenplays for Kubrik. Every day is a school day.
Yes indeed! So many of these noir writers also wrote screenplays... Raymond Chandler wrote the screenplay for Hitchcock's adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's Strangers on a Train
Challenge accepted, let's try my crime tastes!! I really like the sound of this one, especially with it not having the conventional police procedural aspect. Thanks for the rec!!
I really appreciate the invitation to read it with y'all! I really enjoyed it. Calling it a Great American Novel was a little hyperbolic on my part. Let's just call it crime fiction that transcends the genre. It could be Grimdark if you consider early 20th century rural Texas a dystopia. Which I might 😂. Great review!
Yesterday I was starting to pack up my office, since my PhD is officially finished, and saw my advisor’s book. It’s about crime fiction and Modernism, and let’s face it: literary snobbery has never been higher than it was during the modernist period. Yet he wrote a whole book showing that Modernism has a rich tradition of crime fiction. I’m looking forward to reading his book and seeing where that takes me.
Another one added to the list. Just got power of the dog off your recommendation and looking forward to it. Would love to know if you guys have read black wings have my angel. Read it this year and thought it was very interesting but I’m curious to see what people who have more experience in this genre think of it.
It's a good thing he doesn't represent the entire two genres then.. he also writes thrillers exclusively... And I think I've only ever read one 😂 one could also say the same for most genre fiction from the outside (especially fantasy)
Crime Fiction is all the all the same, the book sounds like some schlockee shit you'd buy in the airport....I just bought it. On a side note, as someone who hasn't read much of any of the Crime Fiction genre, I really enjoy how you both talk about the genre and what kind of books you recommend. Cheers, gang
