I always think people are crazy for trying to leave the cap the moment they take it. You risk wasting another minute or so, in order to save a few seconds. Why? Just take the cap. Take it easy. Relax. You don't make up for it by taking it later, you lost over a minute of points. A few minutes later "Capture Points win games". Yep. Then - The enemy is winning because they have more points from caps....

Too true. How many times I've headed into a cap, spotted enemy DDs, been spotted and lasted 30 seconds. Then I look at where my support should have been and it's either behind an island, or it peeled off left and right, from the start.

I wish more people would understand that dds are the key to winning. Eliminate the enemy dds, you will probably win. Lose your dds, you are going to probably lose. Enemy dds should always be targeted early in the game (CV mains, listen up) and every player should be supporting their dd and focusing the enemy dds.

Yeah, CVs ( with some exceptions ) aren't the best ships to take out DDs with, they are the best to spot with though, which relies on your teammates to shoot them, which they won't 9/10 times. And if you have stuff like Halland and Friesland, you have no business near a DD with your planes, unless you want to fly squadrons with 3 planes for the rest of the match ( again a few exceptions ). But yeah, take out the enemy DDs while you have your own alive is almost a guaranteed win.

Sense they reworked the rockets most CVS will waste hole match trying to kill the DDs and then team will scream about no spotting. CV is always the bad guy.

@@jedpratte Yup, only thing CV can do about DDs is spot them, a DD player would have to be a total potato to eat rockets or skip bombs. But then the greedy damage padders refuse to shoot the DD instead of HE farming the BBs.

I may be inconsistent in terms of how I play, but I recently had one of my best ranked battles in a DD. With my trusty Neustrashemy, I held down a flank on my own against an Izumo, a Harbin, and a DD. I capped when the opportunity presented itself as well. I ended up with 120k damage, 2 kills, 2 caps and top of the team in XP. Although I may be inconsistent in my play, I do have good games like this for time to time.

I agree that you have the most impact on the game while playing DDs, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you have the most chances of winning. For players like you, Potato, it most certainly is the case, as you're a way better than average player, but most people should play what they are good at instead of picking roles that just because they are considered strong, and then lose the game because the other DD is better than them. "Most impact on the game" is a double edged sword, your team might win because of you, but it will also lose because of you.

I am a cruiser main, BB's second, and I agree, you have by far the most impact in DD's. I used Kitakaze a few times, and when I get support, it wins the game. When I don't, the results vary greatly.

the biggest key to wins is having a good DD player that is aggressive AND yet intelligent enough not to push to far to fast. with that comes the need for great team support from the rest of your team. it may be easier to shoot at big slow BBs and go for big damage numbers, but 90% of the time the team that wins the DD fight on there flank controls that flank. then having control of the flank the damage numbers for the team go up even more. deal with the little pest DDs at the start and big things will come your way.

exactly my saying. Played 7 ranked games in DDs since yesterday. 6 out of 7 games a win, always 1st or 2nd place on the scoreboard and most games won with a massive points lead. (even got 4 solo caps in one of those games ^^)

Definitely agree with this statement. I spammed DD in this rank season (I usually just trying to have fun like playing fun ships like Georgia, Alaska, Neustrahimy, or Black ) from 50 battle I win 36 of them But then again I met many players doing questionable thing mainly in T8 ships. But hey win is a win. Oh yeah and also just wanna point out that Kearsarge is Monster in ranked.

@Dionisos161 in someway I agree with that statement. I hate when I get suicidal teammate in my team, they just lower the chance of my team to win the game. Sometimes when I get teammate like that I just laugh it off, but when the game is still winnable and they just suddenly go suicide without thinking. it's just makes me hate the game "wtf is this donkey thinking" , but we simply cannot win all match, if wg do add skill based mm in ranked would make every ranked game a very sweety game , I definitely want fair chance to win, But that also will make me tilt way more time if the RNG doesn't go my way. I think Wows RNG based mechanics is too unreliable be a competitive game i afraid

Fully agree, if you have a DD and can run it well you will carry games. I've been running a BB main this ranked season (The Atlantico, and it does very, very well) but I usually use a DD if I want wins in past season. You owe it to your team to be playing to win and do your best to help the team though and it is not easy. I will say that a lot of people who run as a DD don't understand their power in a ranked game but just throw themselves away early on. They push caps alone, or against an enemy with with support, and just die. I'd much rather have a living DD and not take a cap then have one die, an people need to understand that. One can pressure, spot, backcap, or just deny the enemy the cap just by being alive. I've turned and won many games just by being alive at the end, just spotting/capping, and not doing any damage. There are DD's that are much better then others, at least having smoke and hydro is key in my experience so you can hide and spot torps early, or just push an enemy dd who is smoked up.

I came to this conclusion myself. I started playing destroyers in ranked, and then i found out that it doesn't really work all that well. If the team is made out of potatoes, they will start dying like flies, and then all the advantages are gone, because cruisers and BBs will start pushing you, and you can't really stop them all. You will end up being pushed around and being outgunned, resulting minimal game impact. Another scenario that i face quitr often, is when the times team completely ignores destroyers and even though you manage to get the advantage and corner the enemy destroyer you can't win the fight, or you lose too much HP on the fight. So in the end, it depends on how bad your team is, pretty much what happens with any other class in this game.

If your team is full potato, you're going to lose either way. About 30% of games are unwinnable no matter how good you are, which is why even super unicums don't have 100% winrate. On the other hand, about 30% of games can't be lost, because the other team is full potato. The question is what you do with the 40% in the middle. And that's where playing DD has more impact than the other two roles. It's less "fun" in the sense of putting up big damage numbers. But it's the role where skilled players can have the most impact, because war is intellect, and battles are won on information. This is the role with the highest skill cap, lowest skill floor (bad dds have the most negative impact on their team by doing no damage and exploding instantly, and also leaving the team with very limited option to counter the remaining dds on the enemy team).

That's not true. Of course a DD pick doesn't automatically win games, but a DD in the right place at the right time is crucial for winning. What I mean is the same as PQ said: Play aggressive and better than the enemies DDs and use your teammates and surroundings to your advantage. If you don't have the "High ground", don't commit to a fight. And then: Use capping early on to gain an advantage. My games on the map shown in the above video looks most of the time like this: - I go A cap, because it is most often left alone, only covered by a radar cruiser in middle and a BB far away - after caping, torp and torture the CA and BB, maybe the DD in B cap (use tactic described above) - after radar is over (most likely due to superior firepower) contest B cap, finish up the DD and cap - repeat with C cap, but there are mostly the Hydro BBs, so don't push in too hard and use the island split between B and C cap as an exit route --> Win With this, you have so much points lead and map control, you can sit it out in worst case. Also, remember, as long as you are in front of your BB, you screen for torps and you can use the BB as a spotter while smoked up. And don't forget your guns - torps won't win ranked games, because they are much slower in speed and reload. Guns are the prefered weapon to gun enemies down. Use your presence to scare them of. Don't stay directly in front of enemy ships, go to the region, where their flank is exposed.

I have to agree. I've seen so many bad DDs go off to cap A or C alone while everyone else goes another way. Or they stay away from the cap like its poison and get killed

Sometimes the hole team fail trains to 1 cap and me as the DD will solo go to other side and attempt to delay the flank push.

@@drink15 The real issue is when a team has 2 caps they run solo charge to death in a attempt to win harder. I cannot count the ammount of games this happends the BBS die then cry it’s DDs fault just for me to stay alive and win the match back at the end. Get 2 caps and Defend period. The longer a DD stays alive the more da dangerous it becomes. 1 DD can easily go 1v3 if there is no other DDs left on enemy team.

You kind of hinted on this. Another huge value dd's provide is zoning out entire areas of the map. bb's without a dd screening for them either won't push into an area where they know your dd is, or they will push and get farmed. this zoning out or area denial helps to stop or at least slow down pushes.

For T8/9 DD i play mostly Aki, Kita, Pan Asian for Radar, Black for radar, Neustrashimy for the super heal can tank a lot, UK DDs are also good long defensive hydro and smokes that allow me to pick fights and disengage easily, the Italian DDs are also good for ambush style play

I agree with this video in every way! I will add that if one doesn't own a Black, the long range hydro DD's are the next best option, and though a tier down, the Loyang, (which suffered from his match up against you in the Black) with its 5.5km hydro is a good option, as are the pure gunboat tier IX's the Friesland and Groningen with their 5km hydro plus smoke combos. Indeed, the Black is the best counter for any of the 3, provided you have backup (as you aptly explained).

6:10 "Our Rochester will probably go down" ... like, why would he? He is perfectly angled and Kiting from Pommern and against a half-hp bow in cruiser, he can isolate fight with that island circle etc. That position of Ruprecht is my favourite for this line - as long as there is no DD there (or that i can go in and kill it using my secondaries and hydro power), this is the best way to help your team win the game on this map. It is insanely good, especially if you have better secondary accuracy. You can never allow for Schlieffen line to get there and have comfort, it is a death zone spreading in the middle of the map! :D

I dont have a T9 DD atm, so I take my rupprecht for ranked, and I works realy well! I push early or I kite after seeing the ennemy team, and I destroy everything very quickly. The method works very well, with 70% wr ^^

Funny that you mention the IJN DD lines and ranked. The sucky part there is if you're starting out at Tier 7 ranked, both Tier 7 IJN DDs are very underwhelming. The Aka handles like a barge and has bad concealment and calling the Shiri a gunboat is good for a laugh, T6 and T7 are the low points of the IJN DD lines. Of course the Yugmo and Kita are both extremely good as is the Shima at T10 (I've heard mixed things about the Haro, mostly insane DPM and bad concealment)

As a DD main I've also been coasting almost as hard with HE spam cruisers, simply because most cruiser players on NA either play bow tanking CBs or they just play very poorly. Hindenburg has done surprisingly well at just about every role, as has Smolensk and Des Moines. Much like playing a DD it's all about impacting that early dd engagement. I'll admit about half my games in smolensk involve just setting up that 16km zone of nope behind an island and making all their battleships worry more about me than supporting their destroyer lol. BB players just hate getting farmed. Admittedly it helps that I can usually play hindenburg like a giant dd.

I used to scared playing DDs in wows, i thought it's comparable to LT in wot where the primary task u'll do is spotting, but for the past few months DD went from my second least played ship to my most played ship in game lmao, i love gunboating especially now that i've unlocked kita it's a blast in ranked, few days ago unlocked groningen and even though it doesnt have any torps, i still could manage deal more than 50k dmg, something about DD being an absolute beast shredding anything and flanking CV does feels nice

The irony is, some of the DD lines are among the most beginner friendly ships in the game (looking at you IJN Torpedo boat line). In my experience light cruisers are the hardest to play, because you're squishier than a DD, don't have anywhere near the concealment and your main task is killing enemy DDs and HE farming BBs so you need to be in positions where you can shoot and not get shot back at.

@@abdansyakuro1105 Just be aware T6 and T7 Japanese DDs (both lines) are kinda meh then get really good at T8 again. I'm currently grinding through the Schors to work my way up to the Petro and god that ship is painful to play, you have to have a concealment+IFHE captain for it to be viable, it has awful base concealment and the guns are useless without IFHE. Though on the rare occasion you can catch a DD out it absolutely wrecks DDs.

i am a unicum, but kinda bad in DDs. Finished Ranked with mostly in Groningen in roughly 50 games. (Gold 10 => Gold 1). Despite my lack of skill with DDs, these class has such an insane impact even if you dont carry every game. Just fullfill your role will mostly win you the game.

Must say i dont agree on bit at all with this logic. If you play ranked, bring the type of ship, or the ship you are comfortable and play well with. If you cant play well with a dd it doesnt matter how good influence the class has over the battelfield you are probably not gonna be able to take advantage over it anyway, thus screwing over your team completely. Playing to your strengths is whats gonna help your team, not trying to play to someone elses.

Ive been running a gunboat build paolo emilio of all things and it has been a blast so far in ranked crawling smoke + 8 sap guns means you can alpha chunk enemy dds for like 7k then vanish

ive always mained DDs, i quit the game for a year and then play intensively for a month or two again. Recently its been a bit frustrating with so many smoke-radar and smoke-hydro DDs out there. (friesland, groningen, black mostly)

Here's another tip: use a premium tier 8 DD at Bronze and Silver leagues, so even if your team sucks you will get bonus XP and probably save your star :) Cossack and Loyang are probably the strongest contenders for this.

Huh? The Score chart shows the Base XP and not the XP with multipliers A premium will not help you in that way. Its calculated after battle in detailed statistics, the Score chart (to save the star) shows Base XP Pro Tip: Shoot DDs first since 10k damage on them is worth more than 10k on cruisers or BBs, Some classes also get more XP for damaging other ships while others get more credits instead

I've played LoYang, because it is strong in caps with hydro/smoke, and my allies get T9 ships this way, which makes it easier for them to stay alive. I am fine with T8 ;)

Start playing rank this season from last Friday, ending up with an 80% WR to Bronze1 with Kita Kaze, which IMO is the best bronze rank dd slayer! Even better than Black in some way. With RPF I could basically hunt down whatever dds I want. Many Bronze torps dd players would show them their BS and even try to 1v1 a kita when they get caught. And they never expect the instant AP dmg from kita, which would delete most t9 dds in 6-7 salvo.

"Capture Control wins games" Well.... yes and no. To borrow from DolphinProcess "Cap Control flows from Map Control". And to that end, I actually prefer Udaloi over most DDs for winning ranked matches, and I generally stay out of the caps until a flank has been won. The nature of Udaloi (and Tashkent's) guns means that I will out-trade a Kitakaze or Friesland at ranges of 8+ km. So I want to take long-range engagements against DDs, rather than getting up in their faces. But honestly, most of the time, I'm torturing the DD's support, his cruisers and BBs, having them waste their shots as a speed juke and chipping away at their health until they're forced back, stripping their DD of his support. Then we simply push them off the cap and take it for good, not for temporary. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Very true about using DD's. I struggled to gain any traction at rank Silver 3/4 last season. I kept trying the Alaska and Jean Bart. Usually, saving a star, but unable to drag the team to a victory. The plus side, I was making a lot of credits lol. I finally decided to take matters into my own hands and try the Lightning. Smooth sailing through the rest of Silver league. Then Gold was another struggle because I only have the Gearing at 10 and the poor thing has been left behind by other dd's. Managed to get all the wins needed for maximum steel, though. That's all I cared about since I've never played Clan Battles and therefore have never been able to buy a steel ship. Slowly getting close now thanks to ranked. I think I'll only need 1.7k if I get all the steel rewards this ranked season.

Best way to win is to realize that caps are seriously overrated in a 6v6 gamemode. Just lining up crossfires or setting up enemies to overextend to get that cap control wins you the game way more often than it should. It's quite shocking wargaming hasnt adjusted points gain from caps to properly reward cap control in these smaller team compositions, but then again most people don't even realize it or dont agree even when this fact is pointed out to them. So I guess it's fine in the end.

While I do agree with your statement that DDs are the most influential class, there are two caveats IMHO: * DDs can easily get screwed in terms of XP, specially if not able to cap (ex: weak flank+contest cap on the larger maps), which makes saving a star a bit harder. I'm not a fan of this progress system, but it's the unfortunate reality. * DDs are also the harder class to play, and have the highest skill floor. For a more average player, a cruiser or a BB will be more consistent. That being said, practice makes perfect, and the lower number of ships in Ranked simplifies situations, which eases post-combat analysis and learning from mistakes. Training and trying things in Ranked will probably not be good for your karma, but hey, in the end, who really cares? it's not a real competitive mode indicative of skill anyway.

DD's are the best way to win ranked but at T9, I find the DD options are somewhat lacking and in this ranked, I highly recommend Alaska to win games. If you can take out the enemy DD's early on then you have a good chance to win and even if you dont kill them, you can deny them access to the caps. Plus you can do serious damage to BB's and cruisers and is an all round great ship for this ranked.

It's not just ranked, I always try to huntdown destroyers, if nothing else it prevents them from hunting down me! The rest of the battle can carry on with out us which is to the benefit of my team. If I can get team support somuch the better. In ranked (or clan battles) youcan influence the game to your teams benefit without even firing a shot or torp, positioning and what you dan do with it is everything. My best games are my poorest results, bar the win.

DD's is about all I'll play. Two or more that can work together will carry 90% of the time. What's disappointing is when you get a torp boat that won't gun or a gun boat that only wants to smoke farm.

Or ones that won't spot or engage outside of smoke farming. Had a game yesterday, I was in a BB, the DD that was near me wouldn't engage a nearly dead enemy DD, then wouldn't come around a corner to spot an enemy BB that had he done so I would've had dead to rights, instead I had to self spot it, first volley didn't quite klll it then it cits me through the bow with like 3 seconds on my reload

I mean groningen is still up for free xp so anyone looking for a destroyer for ranked this is one of the best if not the best option since smoke hydro and dpm make sure you win all the destroyer fights in a fair scenario sometimes even impossible ones if you are good

My personal opinion, that map is prob the bst map for DD's I have had so many GREAT ranked games in my loyang shooting over islands and taking advantage of BB's tending to be more aggressive in low player count game modes with my short range torps, even tho I suck with DD play in randoms I do exceptionally well in ranked (I also get quite a bit of credits as a by product also😁)

Ehhh, sort of. DDs work well when your team cooperates and supports you. Otherwise you're usually out of luck. Lately I've been using the PR with pretty solid success to hunt down enemy DDs and gain map control. But I play the PR like a cruiser vs. a BB as it has almost no armor.

If you get a CV in your ranked game, it’s checkmate for you in dd…you can smoke up and die or run and be ineffective…like a KAGA with its infinite planes means you are perma spotted..with so few players, you gonna have a plane on top of you pretty much all the time..when you dodge to avoid his planes, you will present your broadside to the enemy and get your guns, engines or torps blapped permanently..CVs should be banned from ranked just like clan battles

er, watch a good cv player...he either leads the team to a win, he saves his star....Not important just for damage, but for spotting; and if he picks the ones with the right planes....a really good cv player can nearly solo the match. (seen it done)

Fully agree. I have 80% WR in my Mogador, Cossack, etc. and only 60% in very good ships like the Alaska or Riga. DDs are just that much better, especially gunboats with utility.

If I don't play dds I somehow 90% of the time end up with literal braindead dds in my team. As in "ignore all caps and go to the corner" or "try to sneak behind the enemy and get found and destroyed with zero impact".

It's been a year since you made this video. Do you still feel it's true. My feeling is OP BB's are ruling the game. If not that, then everyone is playing too passively, sitting way back. And you can do that in a weak-ass Black, with its slow torps and weak/slow guns.

Correction: If you are GOOD at DD then play a DD in ranked. If all you want to do is farm BBs from smoke. Maybe play something else.

I want some real advice. Because I refuse to admit it's my fault. My games dont look like this. I understand tactics. I dont rush without help. To me it feels like more bad luck/bad teams. I pop smoke and go undetected. But I get ships blind firing and all hitting me. My ships seem to soak up all the damage. No ricochets, full pens. It gets so frustrating. I cant get out of bronze. I've had 5 stars for qualifying about a dozen. Times and then boom, my teams for the next 22 matches all die in 5 minutes. I am grinding UK line, using Jutland. This ship is paper. Everyone says it's good, but it's not. It feels like this ranked season is full pro teams taking on fish in a barrel and I'm tired of being the damn fish.

Jutland is objectively very good at everything, but not the best at any one thing. Play to it’s strengths (hit and run), not to the opposing DDs strength ie don’t try to open water gunboat a Kitakaze unsupported, or rush in to a potential radar trap. Use the nearly best in class detection to allow your team to farm the red DD while you spot, or team up with another DD to smash in a 2v1 on the red DD. Also be aware that good players will blind fire you for up to 20-30s after you go dark if you are low enough that they can potentially kill you, but Jutland is mobile enough to dodge between shells if you watch where they are falling, also be unpredictable, try hitting the brakes briefly when dark to throw off their predictive shots (as long as you aren’t being chased by a fast ship on det range), don’t fire back through smoke unless you can outright kill the ship chasing you (your muzzle flashes give an idea of your position) etc. Also use that experience in reverse to farm DDs in smoke yourself - often you can turn an equal HP fight in your favour by chipping off another 5k or so by smart smoke fire while staying dark using their smoke against them. Works especially well agains Italian DDs that are always in the middle of the last puff of smoke. TLDR; git gud, I’m afraid.

When ur only T5-6-7 Destroyer the grind sucks if u dont pay 2win. They have no range. So u gotta stay on Islands all hte time to angle big ships- alot harder. Never tried any T10 ships or better

I think this vid needs to be extended, even though a DD is good for ranked, as soon as you are in a CV game it completely changes, as you are most likely 100% focused

I’m ok in a bb, not bad in a cruiser, but utterly, utterly crap in a dd. 5-10k average damage. Either i die in 5 minutes or let my team get overrun

Some DD lines are very hard to play if you don't play DDs a lot. IJN DDs are probably the easiest to play since you can pretty much always torp from stealth and outspot enemy DDs at most tiers. Big thing is, don't get greedy trying to pad damage numbers, if you aren't torping and can't take a favorable gun engagement, stay dark and spot the enemy BBs for your team, even if they dodge your torps they may have to turn broadside to your team to do it.
