Here is the Puget Systems page that which CPU/GPU's support hardware decoding in Resolve: www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/what-h-264-and-h-265-hardware-decoding-is-supported-in-davinci-resolve-studio-2122/ IF you aren't able to change the codec on your camera to one your computer supports then you should use PROXIES to make the experience smooth. I made a video how to do that easily you can watch here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t-E0lKU9vPQ.html

Thanks for saying! I sure hope so. It's so overwhelming getting into the RU-vid space having to buy the right camera and gear... It can be frustrating when you get everything into your computer and then the editing experience sucks. I hope it helps people on their journey and not have to go through a lot of the frustration that I did 👊

Remember to enable the iGPU on the UEFi Firmware (sometimes still called BIOS) to be able to use the CPU iGPU and it's QuickSync encoders and decoders. On some motherboards it may be labeled as a "iGPU Multi Monitor" or similar name. Task Manager should list as a GPU alongside your discrete one if activated.

Great video that's going to help a lot of people understand and know what to buy for the smoothest experience! Good stuff. I'm a professional video editor. Myself and every other video editor I've worked with proxy the files. It's nice if your cpu/video cars has decoders, but for the smoothest experience and faster video editing you have to proxy the files, and also it let's you spend way less money on hardware because when 10 year old computer can playback prores proxy or dnx lb files nicely on the time line.

Thanks for the comment! I just hope people will find the video. It's nice to know info anyway. So what computer do you use to edit videos? I have a beefy video card arriving at the end of the week so this will be the real test for me. I will finally have all the answers to my questions about what hardware one needs to have a smooth video editing experience. Surprisingly the smoothest video editing I've had yet was the M3 Max MacBook Pro. But I'm building a beastly machine now so I'll be so curious what happens! Will it still need proxies!? lol.

@@thesahdstudio I build my own PCs. I have: i7-12700k, Gigabyte Z690 Aero G (has iGPU support), RTX-3060 Ti, 64 GB Ram DDR5, two m.2 NVME drives (one for OS, one for caching) and two hard drives, one I edit off of cause I use proxies and the other for archiving/storage. I also have a DAS for more archiving. I proxy everything for the fastest experience. My computer handles everything great EXCEPT when I start putting 3+ effects on clips which taxes the GPU hard. I plan on getting a newer video card but not sure if it'll make much of a difference.

Thanks for this video! I didn't know about the importance of CPU/GPU decoding. I got a desktop PC working recently, and I think I'm having a better editing experience compared to my laptop because of this. Davinci resolve is hungry for VRAM. AMD rx 7900 xtx is a good option. In terms of CPU intel is recommended because of integrated decoders and encoders. Unless you are editing raw, in which case ryzen is recommended. Id avoid any motherboards from ASUS. The drama they have created lately for themselves is wild.

I've seen some headlines but haven't watched anything about those Asus mobo's. I guess I should watch one, I need to know what's going on! Most of the builds I've put together use Asus mobos. And you'd buy a 7900xtx over a 4080 super eh? The vram IS way higher but everything I've read says the Nvidia is enough and performances better (plus has better support/drivers).

Amazing stuff that i had no idea about, wish I had known this years ago. Thank you for passionately explaining it so clearly. As a kid i was very into making fan videos on my laptop - me and my dad painstakingly upgraded the RAM on my laptop to pretty much no avail, and every moment of editing was like wrestling with a computer that did not want to work with me. I now wonder if this had been the issue. My question as i am not the biggest tech expert is how does this apply to video you haven't shot yourself through a camera? Is there an expected encoded status of video downloaded online or is it something you have to check per case within file info? And how would one work around this, is there software that can pre-decode/convert a file so that it would work better for your system? Thanks for a great video :)
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 3 месяца назад
Glad you found the video! Yes that probably was the problem for sure :) It's very easy to check what footage you get, and yes, when people/companies work together, the codec is a HUGE topic of conversation. With high end cameras, they shoot uncompressed (often ProRes) footage. That stuff is super easy for computers to edit BUT the trade off is the files are HUUUGEEEE. Like too big for laptops kind of thing. Which is why compressed footage is so handy... it just makes it hard for computers to work on. But yeah, you can use HandBrake (I never have) and transcode any footage to something easy like ProRes... so if you download whatever file you want, use it, make something easy, then when you're done, you could either leave the footage as is OR use HandBrake to convert it back to whatever the person/client wants. Hope that helps :)

Indeed, Nvidia’s lack of support for 4:2:2 is criminal, it makes a very visible difference in video quality, especially in low light with gradients in the background. So then it’s all about intel quicksync but that’s way slower than apple silicon so its proxies or just use a Mac :)
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 3 месяца назад
Haha nice! Are you saying that from experience or from what you've seen online? I haven't been able to find much on the subject... The only thing I have seen was this guy saying the scrubbing is better on his PC: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p4wLR2RzCaY.htmlsi=PUALIvUPdEToF9fP&t=154 I'd love to know more about that if you have any links or anything I could check out. And yeah, in THIS video I uploaded I noticed the background was super noisy... probably because I shot it in 4:2:0 instead of my usual 4:2:2.
@DigiDriftZone
@DigiDriftZone 3 месяца назад
@@thesahdstudio From experience, I also like you wondered why is 4:2:2 so slow editing on Windows and that's when I discovered it's because Nvidia did not bother implementing support for it on the hardware.

Wow… I was just about to order PC parts that I’ve been searching/studying for weeks. Turns out the codecs play a big part on the smoothness of the video editing. I guess I’ll take a step back and reconsider the m3 pro MacBook as a better option. It’s more expensive and a little bit boring, since I’m not building and exploring myself. Also, I’ll not be able to upgrade it in the future… But it’ll do the job, right? 😑
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 3 месяца назад
Yeah it'll get the job done for sure. What camera will you be working with? It's worth taking a moment to consider what kind of footage you will have. But yeah, the MacBooks kind of have you covered no matter what. You really can't go wrong with it... Plus you can do it all on battery which is nuts. You just pay a little more for it! If you'll be doing video editing though spend the extra and get the Max. I know it's more but it's worth it.

@@thesahdstudio since I'm shooting with a R6 mark II (clog 3, 10 bit 4:2:2, not supported by Nvidia's GPUs), one alternative is using a external recorder for better codecs alternatives... For the video editing on Davinci Resolve I'm sure those codecs, such as ProRes, are the way to go if I ever switch to Windows PCs. Or use proxys, which I should try more often. Nowadays I'm editing in a M1 MacBook Pro. It's been a good/OK experience, except when dealing with graded 4K footage or working on the fusion tab. Thanks for the support! Keep going with the great work ;)

Huge difference. Nice demonstration..... I'm curious to see, same footage Same codec How a high end ssd makes a difference to time line smoothness. Apple put mid range ssd in mid range and higher end in more expensive machines and slowest in cheapest machines. I suspect ssd quality has a big impact on timeline smoothness.. More than adding extra ram. Or a new gen cpu etc. Ohhh!!! Also I made a discovery about proxy video footage and how it degrades the quality of your footage. So we all know the higher the bitrate and codec the better quality the footage you have, resolution and ability to manipulate it in edit without degradation of the footage. Turns out proxy footage is not only much worse than originaly shot pro res footage which would make sense it's also worse than the h265 original footage. It introduces artifacts and loses detail etc. So It basically poisons the original footage quality.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 3 месяца назад
Hmmm interesting about the proxy footage. Where did you find out about that? Be fun to run some tests. Yeah I imagine if you are taking crazy high res footage and converting/transcoding it, it might lose a little of detail. But it's not supposed to right? I just ordered a new PC so I'll run better tests in the near future!

@@thesahdstudio I thought it sounded too good to be true about prores prxy. How you can magically transform compressed codecs into high quality prores footage. It is not that for sure. it was an editing codec video comparison, h265 vs pro res vs prores prxy. The resolution was not the only downer on proxy footage, it had wierd artifacts in it, and couldnt be de noised as well as either of the original footages. yea, ill watch you upcoming build for sure.
@Charles-qw4hv
@Charles-qw4hv 3 месяца назад
Something id love to know, if you do? Certain video editing tasks hit cpu or gpu, youve shown that scrubbing hits cpu and encoders/ but regarding gpu performance can the uncompressed codecs perform better when making magic masks on same machine against the compressed codecs despite having encoders etc. Basically do encoders decoders aid effects and gpu heavy performance and is that where you could gain an advantage by using the data heavy codecs. Becuase the encoders/decoders seem to handle cpu scrubbing.. I know that the internal ssd effects scrubbing

@@Charles-qw4hv Based on my experience when I was testing different codecs with the M3 Max (which I made a video about) the codecs do NOT matter at all when it comes to magic mask speed etc... that's all on the GPU and it seems to be completely separate. I'll play around with that once I get my new build up and running though! Good question.
