This video goes into detail about the preparation and electrolysis for the extraction of aluminium from the initial natural resource bauxite.
In addition, I also discuss the economic and environmental issues that relate to this process and hence show the importance of recycling aluminium.
Timestamps:

3:06 Electrolysis Methods
3:24 Step 1 - Sodium Hydroxide Treatment
4:05 Step 2 - Precipitation
5:02 Step 3 - Formation
5:45 Step 4 - Electrolysis
9:15 Step 4 - Economic Considerations

I'm very very sorry for saying "Aluminium Hydroxide" instead of "Aluminium Oxide" multiple times in the 3. Formation slide at 5:23, so beware of my mistake. However, THE SLIDES ARE CORRECT. Please forgive me 3: - Nhan

Mr. Simple Science, i think in the Formation slide at 5:23, in the chemical equation, the Al(OH)3 should be 2Al(OH)3

Hope this helps this is basically a summary of what goes on in the extraction of aluminium from the bauxite. Xx 1. Aluminium oxide is dissolved in molten cryolite 2. Graphite casing inside metal casing (cathode) 3. Aluminum (Al^+3) attracted to the negative cathode and gains electrons Al^+3 +3e ---> Al (reduction) 5. Aluminium sinks because it's more dense. 6. Oxygen forms at the anode 7. Carbon also forms there making CO2 Overall in the electrolyte: 2Al2O3--->4Al+3O2

During oxidation at 8:12 wouldn't oxygen require 4 electrons since its diatomic?

At 8:06 you said that at the cathode the Oxygen ions will be oxidized? But doesn't oxidation take place at anode??

Is this both tha Bayer and Hall-Herault process?
@sarwarn2107
@sarwarn2107 6 лет назад
I don't think in industrial process they do purification process (steps 1, 2 and 3). The aluminium oxide is already exist in the raw mineral. The steps 1, 2 and 3 add more cost to the process especially the heating process in step 3.

why is sodium hydroxide used?
@jamiiforamhezron7814
@jamiiforamhezron7814 6 лет назад
NaOH is used so as to form a soluble complex compound
@SabrinaXe
@SabrinaXe 5 лет назад
Because sodium hydroxide is a base so the aluminum oxide which is an amphoteric, reacts or dissolves in the sodium hydroxide forming sodium aluminate(NaAlO2). The impurity which is iron oxide, is a basic oxide so it won't react or dissolve in sodium hydroxide since they're both bases so iron oxide will remain as a solid. As for sand(silicon dioxide) it is an acidic oxide BUT it is too unreactive
@SabrinaXe
@SabrinaXe 5 лет назад
To sum it up, sodium hydroxide is used to remove the impurities such as sand and iron oxide present in the bauxite ore
