I need this variety for growing. In south India Pondicherry i saw this plants with more pins . Prickly Pears (cactus fruit)are very good for health. The leaves are eaten by Mexican peoples. It's a good way to solve the hunger problems of the world. Because it's no need water for growing. Why we can't use this plant like any other vegetables?
Opuntia Ficus Indica does need watering. I dont know why this drought tolerant plant has the misconception of not needing water. Also.. . .. This plant can become invasive in some regions. Which is why not a lot of countries invest in doing this. Look what happened with Australia and their Opuntia problem awhile back.
They did not become invasive. It was the Australian that went on an arrogant, maniacal rampage. They doused the cacti with gasoline and tried to set it on fire. The plant is 90% water, making it fire resistant. They expected a conflagration but got a giant steam bath with thorns as flying projectiles land on people eyes and ear drums. Gasoline in Australia is not cheap so the local public coffers were bled dry, and a a demoralized Australian populace just quit and kept silent on their defeat. Good job Australia!
