On this segment of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation, Mo Rocca speaks with Geoffrey Reynal, the creator of the Iglou Insulated Shelter.
With a background in engineering and knowledge of how heat and energy work, Reynal was able to come up with an idea for a small, portable, insulated shelter to keep homeless people warm during cold months.

Jeffrey has a big heart and thanks for Mo for highlighting the perils faced by people who sleep outside. Having said that, portable temporary shelters are not the solution to homelessness. The only deficit we have is political will to enact: 1. affordable housing (NIMBYs and developers are the obstacles) 2. enough rapid rehousing vouchers 3. supportive housing (evidence-based housing first programs with supports for people who need the help) 4. once people are housed, mental health and substance abuse treatment. There is a desperate scarcity of inpatient and outpatient treatment programs (and I don't mean to imply these are generally the cause of homelessness - at LEAST as often, they are the RESULTS of homelessness / certainly exacerbated by insecure housing)

That's real awesome especially that u can fold up easier than a tent. I was thinking of making one from those giant pipes with 4 to 5 ft opening, then add wheels and handle for moving around. Maybe about 6 to 7 foot long.
@AndreaWestlake306
@AndreaWestlake306 3 года назад
First thing I thought of was a giant pipe when I saw a similar post on face book this morning. I really like the idea that you have, but where to get the pipes and what are the pipes made off ?
@greato80
@greato80 3 года назад
@@AndreaWestlake306 ..I'm sure theres piping companies that specialize in pipes . I was thinking of the polyeurathene kind. I got the idea from a RU-vid video. The bed hung above bottom by rope or strong cord so that theres space under to store some things. I dont know how heavy pipe would be either. But would be damage proof pretty much.

The second they walk away from their shelter someone will steal it. Its ridiculous but well intentioned. Another problem that probably doesn't affect people in Paris winter temperatures but would in colder places, is fresh air. When its cold you really need to seal it in so you need another area just for the head that gets fresh air but this area is separated/shielded from the rest of the shelter, because if you don't do this the occupant will run out of fresh air. In the video it wasn't sealed well so air can seep in. Which is fine because Paris has mild winters. Try it in -25c.....good luck!

@swilhelm3180 3 года назад
@@DarkMoonDroid Instead of trying to put me down, why not look at ways of improving this problem with your own suggestions? People that post tend to read the comments. They're curious. If you suggest something smart they'll incorporate that and make the design better, saving lives. How great would that be?
@wakandaisevil
@wakandaisevil 6 месяцев назад
@@swilhelm3180 I agree, a simple tent with sleeping bag would be better than this. its full of holes and won't retain any actual heat. I support the creator, but its been 3 years and zero improvements made. It seems its more of a ego project than anything

A nice design, but the problem with the housing the homeless is not the housing part….it’s the WHERE do you put them. There are many easy, comfortable and low cost options, especially the Conestoga huts, but also higher grade tents on a platform, yurts, campers, etc. The problem is always the land to place them,..most public and private land doesn’t allow encampments, and even when there is land, still a question of who can stay there, for how long, is a large encampment with no water or bathrooms acceptable, etc.

Churches operate tax free which makes them publicly funded, generally have some lawn/ parking lot as well as bathrooms and they love to pretend that they care. So I would start there, maybe make it a requirement if they want to maintain their tax free status.

Transmitting diseases isn't so great. If someone were to light one on fire, as happens with tents some times the person would have no way to escape.
