A man of letters, merchant, abolitionist, theater lover, and musician, Charles Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780) made history as the first British man of African descent to vote in a general election. Sancho’s published music - including songs and dance music - testifies to his accomplishments and engagement in the arts while offering a glimpse of Black British culture in the late 18th century.
