One of my favorite moment in life is to discover new enjoyable classical music and this symphony is exactly the kind of music I like to discover, thanks to this channel.

This symphony is a pearl of music from the classical-romantic period. For its exuberant and youthful strength . Integrating some moments of an amazing lyricism that only a musical genius like Ignaz could have composed. The orchestra’s interpretation and direction are superb. Viva the magnificent music composed by the brilliant , magnificent and grandiose Ignaz Moscheles.

What did I just listen to? Interesting key changes and chromatic thematic material and transitions, a super colorful orchestration that gives the entire wind section active and interesting roles, some Beethovenian humor in the finale and solid nods to Mozart while maintaining a forward thinking feel throughout. This might be my favorite symphony from the "forgotten" masters vault. Thank you KDIlfeng!!

This really is a satisfying work.DId Moscheles own an ironclad battleship?.
@klop4228
@klop4228 5 лет назад
Yeah, he owned about half as large an armada as Czerny. Beethoven was in charge of the air force. Clementi had a rowboat.

I know I commented on this before, but I'd watch a show where the premise is "Classical composers also all happened to be members of a Sci-fi Navy and did battle for fun"

Robert Schumann thought fairly highly of Moscheles, but basically trashed this symphony. I hate to disagree with a composer that I deem Great, but... I just love it! I actually think it's outstanding, though to me Moscheles' Piano Concerto #6 is his masterpiece (but not his only outstanding work by any means). VERY under-rated symphony by a VERY under-rated composer, in my opinion.

This is an outstanding work by a second rate 19th Century composer. Like Godot, I find myself waiting for the First Movement to take off or do something besides a recurring, delimited solo trumpet fanfare that sounds like that WW1 battleship sitting atop a cloud bank and going absolutely nowhere. The andante starts with promise and fizzles. The Third movement has some interesting moments after you get by the initial buildup but is dragged down to Davy Jones' Locker by the Trio. The Finale is the first-rate part of the work particularly with its Scherzoesque drops and musical parodies.

@@willwyche2064 Moscheles had a few masterpieces here and there. Sonata Melancolique, The Piano Trio, and a lovely cello sonata are worth giving a listen.

Schumann also thought little of Alkan and viewed Thalberg to be on par with Chopin and Liszt. Critics suck, whether they are an embittered narcissist who couldn't carry a tune in a suitcase, or the composer of Kreisleriana.

Ignaz and F. Mendelssohn knew each other quite well, as i recall reading.... and some-hard-to-pinpoint motifs of the latter can be 'heard' in the former's major compositions, according to my inner hearings... sometimes I strongly suspect that each composer shared a similar Higher Emotional Center brain circuitry....

Well, I wonder why Schumann trashed this piece...There are quite a number of traces and phrases of Schumann here (try his Nr.3 fo exemple versus Moshelles´ 1st movement). Stamina, energy, decision, even some good-humour one would put in paralel with some Brahms structural "kraftig" pieces (piano sonatas). However...if this symphony was converted into a piano concerto....maybe it would have sound better overall. In any event, thank you for making this discovery and sharing it.

Schumann was an acute musical critic but, in this case, he may have been negatively biased because of was so very jealous of Ignaz's awesome sideburns.

La opinión de Schumann es tan válida o tan errónea como la de cualquier otro. Tampoco entendió la Sonata en si menor de Liszt.

Certainly accomplished and at time musically piquant-but all in all a rather diffuse symphony with a tendency toward overstatement, and too much adherence to form. There are reasons such works wind up being 'neglected'-yet it is always fascinating to hear them to compare to those great works being produced by composers of their time with more genius-they did not spring out of nowhere. Moscheles has moments of beauty and accomplishment -but I still will not say he was UNDER-rated... But a valuable musical life indeed...
@andrewpetersen5272
@andrewpetersen5272 5 лет назад
Adherence to form? Lord I wish more composers would apply it. We might have decent music to listen to in our time.
@klop4228
@klop4228 5 лет назад
@@andrewpetersen5272 Many composers nowadays adhere very strictly to form. That's not the reason they're difficult to listen to (most of the time). It's the much more local things (harmony and metre) that normally make modern music harder to listen to. Try some Jennifer Higdon or John Adams. Maybe some Rautavaara.
@andrewpetersen5272
@andrewpetersen5272 5 лет назад
@@klop4228 John Adams is nice, but ifind the minimalist stuff a bit plain. Higdon is good. Guess my preference tends to the old Moderns like Barber and Antheil and I'ves. I understand your point, I should say I prefer the development of musical composition more when it based in some foundation of melodic line.
