Inaugurating Brown Arts Institute’s IGNITE Series, Varying Shades of Brown was a campus-wide project featuring major installations and programs by artist Carrie Mae Weems (b. 1953, Portland, OR), whose conceptual, image-focused work has been revered for over four decades. This IGNITE Spotlight features the exhibition "Cyclorama: The Shape of Things" - a video-in-the-round, which collaged recent and found footage of resistance to white supremacy, as well imagery of Black joy, beauty, presence, and possibility.

Launched with the opening of The Lindemann Performing Arts Center in October 2023, the IGNITE Series showcases a diverse array of offerings from across our Brown Arts ecosystem, including projects by students, student groups, faculty and departments, Brown alumni, Brown Arts Institute collaborations with other campus units and Artistic Innovators, as well as projects by local and regional artists and arts organizations.
