So to ftfh:1W laser + Unprotected eyes + treating it like your average toy laser pointer = no vision anymore... and probably many burn marks. Knowledge is the greatest safety measure one can take when it comes to lasers, not even safety glasses can save someone from stupidity. C:
Diffuse reflection of a class 4 laser (like this one shining on the end of a sparkler you're holding) can definitely damage your retina. You have been warned.

have you tryed to guide the HV with a laser. because if you get a powerful enough laser and ionize the air in a path the HV will fallow that path. here is an article i read explaining this. www.popsci.com/technology/article/2012-03/lightning-can-strike-twice-if-you-have-some-lasers
In all seriousness, you need to be wearing safety glasses, even the reflections off the walls and off objects will ruin your vision, and your eyes are not fast enough to blink and protect themselves. You're also indirectly encouraging others to do this without glasses. I'm all for blowing shit up and making sparks and destroying stuff, it's all good fun, but lasers are no joke, and you can't fix the damage they can do.

Omg this still gets me! See the blue dots??? That’s what happens to your retinas even just by looking at a refraction of lasers like those on your hand. Wear eye protection!!
I'm Australian, where the only thing harder to legally buy than a gun is fireworks. We have to make do with sparklers, home chemistry and backyard thermite. Still, if you wire together a bundle of about 150 sparklers and set 'em all off at once, you do get a decent fountain.
Nice video mate, your camera doesn't seem to like the laser so much though :P I was wondering, do you guys use protection goggles when operating the laser, since it's a 1W laser? I have a 1W laser myself but I'm a bit scared to use it. (I do have eye protection but the goggles cost only €2 so I'm not sure if I can trust them...)

Buy one from CNI. Or Laserwave. I assume after 9 months you probably found one, but if not, CNI and Laserwave are high quality, and IR filtered. I use them in my projector builds.
why does the picture distort with green lasers? the camera must not like filming green light. I have a low power green laser from one of those star shower things you see advertised on TV. I should turn it on with no guard and aim it at the wall and see if it distorts the cam on my phone. I'm going to try to make a laser pointer from this laser and a power bank case and 2AA battery holder.
It may be a switching power supply, in which case it's quite normal for those things to make soft quiet hissing or whistling noises depending on what your device is doing, I've used heaps of devices that use switching power supplies and the noises those things make always fascinates me.

***** Unless you put an IR filter in front of it, a great deal of the power goes out as IR. It will still trigger the power meter and can thus fool the unsuspecting user, and also hurt them.
+Lajos Winkler This is a DPSS laser, while infrared is present inside, it is not emitted. inside, precautions are taken to insure only 532 nm green is emitted. This includes mirrors which are 100% reflective at 1064nm, but are transparent at 532 for output windows, and also some simply direct all the 1064 back into the YAG rod for more pumping and "recycling" of a sort. only cheap DPSS lasers, or ones from questionable brands emit IR radiation. IR filters are really not needed due to the mirrors, but they are always an option if you question whether the laser is emitting IR radiation. I think perhaps you were thinking of some of the cheap "linear" versions in which the KTP/LBO crystal simply dumps straight to the output window emitting 532 and 1064.
These videos are great, I think they popularise and make science attractive to an audience far more effectively than even 'Brainiac' ever managed to do :o)
What? I live in Michigan and I've never even seen a wood-core sparkler. And, in fact, they just recently lifted some of the fireworks restrictions here.
Was that the back of your old LG scope/generator you were welding the sparklers off of that you smashed in an old vid after burning up the generator in it in a failed experiment were you tried to drive an induction motor controller out of a washing machine?
Could you pulse your laser with more energy for a short burst to limit the heat build-up and let the vaporized material from the first strike to clear out of your line of fire?
So a laser weapon could start a reaction of thermite? Thats what the sparkler has in it right? Wonder if "hypothetically" a MTEL (mobile tactical high energy laser) could make a reaction start in the trade center explosion, assuming there was thermite and explosives planted.....interesting
