IJN Mogami - "Friendly Fire, Isn't."

I resisted the urge to title this 'The Bane of the Japanese Army', not going to lie.
The Japanese light/heavy cruiser Mogami (it depends on the year) is an interesting case. Her design process was a mess, largely down to the Japanese intention to get as much out of her as possible. Especially by giving her the ability to switch main guns, relatively easily.
And then there was her service history. Where she contrived to collide with multiple friendly ships, sink more Japanese ships in a single torpedo run than most submarines, and led directly to the sinking of one of her own sisters.
Not a lucky ship, this one.

Given that it was mostly Japanese Army personnel that suffered from the torpedo strike I doubt it could even be considered friendly fire on the Navys's part.

Exactly. This is why I like to say that Midway was a victory for the Japanese. The Japanese Army, that is.

More like moral support as it was so outdated like the 1.1mm pipe organs the US navy used they were never able to update the weapons for anti-air armaments hell we went from 20mm Orikanos to 40mm Bofers

Contrary to universal belief, the 25mm type 96 AA gun was effective. As long as the gunners withheld fire until the target aircraft was within 1000 meters. At that close range, the problem of excessive vibration slightly affecting trajectory was mitigated, and the gun would not have to cease firing to reload just as the attacker came within range to do its thing. Many allied aircraft found to their dismay that the damn thing actually worked IF it opened up at very close range. Of course, the problem with having a light AA gun that can't shoot down an aircraft until it comes within 1000 meters is that you have about 5 seconds to get on target and score multiple hits before you are "affected by an inclined plane wrapped helically around a conical axis".

On the day Mogami was sunk her bad luck immediately seemed to transfer over to her sister ship Kumano. Kumano had had a pretty good career up until that point, only damaged once due to a near miss in 1943. Starting at the battle of Samar, the Kumano would collect about as much damage as the Mogami had taken in her entire career in the span of one month. Bow blown off by USS Johnston, air attack, submarine attack and more air attack, until she was finally overwhelmed. Her time in that month is very interesting to look at, as her damage control teams worked miracles to somehow keep her afloat despite more and more damage adding up until it became just too much.

Mogami’s final collision was one that’s often wrongly blamed on her (as in that it was assumed she was the one that did the ramming) due to a simple typo when it was actually Nachi that rammed into her.

Excellent video , I had a interview a few years ago with a World War Two veteran who served on HMAS Arunta , when he talked a bit about the surigao strait , he really talked at lengths about the Mogami, and the stats about her, I think this gives an idea of how much these ships caused a stir during World War Two

As a teenager in the early sixties the frontispiece of a British guide to Japanese Cruisers featured the Class. As the British Design Chief would have remarked with a British phrase in common usage; “Cheats never prosper.” 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇺🇸

One thing you left out from the video. Was that prior to the Battle of Surigao strait. The Southern Force was spotted and attacked by aircraft from Enterprise and Franklin. Compared to the beat up she had taken at Midway. It was only minor damage from straffing and rockets. Before Halsey recalled the two carriers north to deal with Musashi.

If repeat if she could get close to enemy shore the guns could be used for indirect fire. Very unusual for a naval gun.

My understanding is that the long lance torpedoes would have an explosive head but also a tank of alcohol as fuel and a tank of compressed oxygen. If the oxygen tank ruptured the whole thing would go up. I have read that as a result Japanese destroyers were in the practice of firing the torpedoes at maximum range to avoid the risk of a catastrophic secondary explosion if the Americans scored a hit.

I’m puzzled as to the removal of the aft two turrets. I know a float plane or two is a valuable asset for larger warships, but twelve? And at the cost of 40% of your main battery? Very good history of an intriguing ship.

The losses at Midway showed Japan they needed more effective scouting measures, hence she was given so many floatplanes.

My favourite class of heavy cruiser during the Pacific theatre, and am glad she was discovered by the team of researchers who have discovered many tombs under the sea. The original mounts of the class were later installed on both Yamato, and Musashi, as well as the light cruiser, Oyodo. Great video, take care, and all the best.

Yup. One of our DD's landed a direct hit- on North Carolina's forward port side 5" gun director... During a Kamikaze free-for-all off Okinawa. Killed several, and wounded a bunch more. I just toured the NC, and saw where it hit. There's a plaque on the open signal bridge immediately forward of it- we're talking 10 yards away, max. These guys had a front row seat... (and suffered many casualties from it) The quotes from guys who survived really hit home. The one that got me, was from a guy whose buddy was right in front of him- nd was killed. He said "I hope I never experience a day like that ever again." Turns out, there's a very good reason there are FOUR of these 5" gun directors. NOT a great time to lose that capability. One of the Docents was telling us a story about it: A Marine had been climbing up the ladder to that area when the shell hit, and somehow managed not to be blown off. (this is right under/next to the director tower) When he reached the top, there was a grievously injured sailor laying on the deck. Apparently his abdomen had been ripped open. The Marine figured he was a goner, but got help, and brought him to the nearest triage station. He never heard who it was or whether he made it, so he put on his dress uniform, and attended the burial at sea ceremony the next day. This event never left him, and haunted him his whole life. Decades later, he attended a reunion at the NC museum, and was relating this story to his wife and others, when a man walked up to him, put his hands on his shoulders, and said: That sailor was ME- you saved my life! A similar information plaque is placed by turret 2, where they were hit by a Japanese Torpedo.

Always felt the class would have excelled if they had deleted the fifth turret and put that tonnage into structural reinforcement and protection for the remaining turrets. Such ought to have solved most of the architectural problems handily.
