The best set of #Ikettes ...if #Lejune was a 4th member this would be a magical set!!! But #Esther was a great member long time member of the Revue. And this was one of my favorite dresses #Tina wore in this performance
Good clip. I've been in love with Tina since 1968 or so. My dad took me to my first rock concert in 1970, and it Ike and Tina. I was 15 at the time. Blew this little white boy's mind!
CORRECTION: I read Esther's obituary. She died on December 6' 2006! Although she suffered a stroke at the age of 48, she died at the age of 62 from a form of skin cancer. Vera Hamilton died on August 31' 2013. And Jean Brown Burks (who married Ike and Tina's trombonist, Eddie Burks) died in 2001. I'm not sure what caused their deaths!!!
+ Raphael Sias I always wondered what became of Jean. Now I know. All 3 of them Ikettes were younger than Tina. What a shame! I loved this line up of Ikettes.
I love this "set" of Ikettes, too! Mainly because they are the backing vocals on the studio recording of PROUD MARY. I dnt know Vera's age...but Esther was 5 yrs younger than Tina. And I dnt know Jean's B-DAY, but she and Tina were both born in 1939!
+ Raphael Jean was born in 1939? She didn't look her age then. Especially when you look at her performing in the video filmed in 71 at their concert in Holland. All 3 Ikettes looked about the same age. I know that Esther was born in February of 45. Vera probably was about the same age. I think she was 70 at the utmost when she passed in 2013. There's a close up on her when she sings 'Another piece of my heart' she didn't look older than Esther who then takes the lead. Esther was said to be the rock of the group as she was a real long term Ikette. What energy! I read about her stoke. They all had nicknames too: Vera was 'Skinny' and Jean was 'Heavy Hips'. I don't know Esther's. I'm happy I grew up with these legends.
Hello Channel ......I have so much to comment on. First let's acknowledge TINA not only looks younger than her age there, but just as young as the Ikettes. It's just to assume she's older because she's their leader. And Esther's nickname to the Revue was "Muther"! Spelled that way, but pronounced "Mu'tha"! Because she was the longest running Ikette, who left the group after one too many FINES from Ike (the last fine was for being late going on stage), but later rejoined the Ikettes for the rest of Ike & Tina! She was given the nickname because the Revue considered her to be the MOTHER of all the Ikettes...being responsible for their training and leadership. She was also called, the "SUPER IKETTE"! She sang lead on most Ikette songs, choreographed songs in the show, and caught on to the routines instantly....faster than anyone else, according to Tina! GO ESTHER!!!
+ Raphael It is very interesting to know these details as the Ikettes were pretty much underrated I think. I was speaking of Jean when I said she didn't look her age. Btw, according to the fact that Jean Brown and Jean Burks are the same person, which I'm quite sure it was, I remember I saw in Tina's book a photo in black and white taken at Tina's ( 27 th ) birthday party in 1966, Jean was present with other Ikette Pat Powdrill and Jean really looked like a kid beside Tina. In my opinion, she couldn't have been over 19 on this photo. That's why it's hard to believe she was born in 1939, but I may be wrong. Maybe you have seen this photo. I'm not surprised to read that Esther trained the other girls due to her infectious energy and long running in the I&TT's Revue . What a pity she died so young… I did like Vera Hamilton very much; she was very feminine and graceful. I enjoy to read about the Ikettes; most of them were very sexy besides being excellent professionals, singers, dancers and entertainers.
