Awesome tips! Here are translations for the IKEA names, Swedish to English. Greetings from Sweden. Konstfull - Artistic / Artsy Applaryd - an old Swedish townlike name. Appla/apla=old Swedish name for apple (nowadays "äpple"). Ryd=old name for cleared ground, specific dialect for the district of Småland where IKEA is situated. So, Applaryd = cleared area for apple farming. Nymåne - New Moon Ypperlig - Excellent Ekenäset - Townlike name, meaning peninsula (näset) with oaks (eke). Ullerslev - A town in in Denmark. Gullviva - The flower Cowslip / Primrose Lohals - A town in Denmark. Markfrost - Ground frost Molnart - Literally translates to "Cloud type". Fjädrar - Feathers Kärleksgräs (imaged pillow) - Love grass Sanela - a name, not Swedish Aina - a name, quite common in Finland and Sweden. (Red: Fun addition. Aina is also Swedish urban slang for the police.) Långfjäll - the long mountain. "Fjäll" is a mountain or high elevation area without trees. Bumerang - Bumerang Tillagd - Added Ombonad - Snug Solklint - Sun cliff. "Klint" is a flat area above a cliff. Tjabbig - Cruel / Disgruntled. Old Swedish, not really used nowadays.
Thx! It's interesting to know the meaning of some of Ikea's "names". I can imagine designers having fun picking names that just sound cool, out of ordinary things, places or anything and thinking about the rest of the world trying to prononunce them 😂
We have pets too. We also like to really use our pillows. The ability to change and launder the covers every few weeks is nice. The natural fabric covers and feather fill feels so nice too.
@@bettenotap4791 Also in Canada. I am a quilter and use class projects as cushion covers. I keep 2-3 of the inserts around all the time so I have them ready, as IKEA is a day trip away for me.
That's funny, I just bought an Applaryd sofa (and it's much cheaper here in the UK, wow!). It is beautiful and I don't really regret my purchase but I should warn others about two negatives I'm experiencing: it's not deep enough and the back cushions are surprisingly hard.
Its really made to sit up straight, like you would sit in an office chair, its not lounge around the house furniture, and that would be a problem. I have a couple chairs that are like that, people hate them and I'm like "sit up straight" and then they are like 'Oh". Mostly people avoid them, which is fine by me, less wear.
has it softened over time? It seems that some of the ikea couches get squishier over time and I'm conflicted between buying a 'soft' one or getting a firmer couch that will soften up.
@@notverynotoriousg5674as someone who is 5foot 1 with a following wind the appleyard is just perfect . Those deep sofas are comfy if I curl up on them but I don’t always want to. 😀
My daughters happened to be at IKEA when I watched your video lol and I’ve been screen shotting and had them get me the green vase and the down insert pillow. We also have that last Solklint light and it’s beautiful. Since IKEA has so much stock I appreciate these videos
I got the cream Langfjall for exactly the reasons you. mentioned - I wanted something that was comfortable but that looked good, and wouldn't dominate my space. I live in a traditional Japanese apartment which has an open-concept kitchen/living/dining area, and my 'office' is in the corner of that area. It'll be never be beautiful, but I found changing the chair made a big difference. Like others have mentioned, I also have added a pillow for a little extra support but I've been very happy with it.
I’ve had my eyes on the Äpplaryd for a long time now and it’s definitely in my plans for a move we’re doing this year. It’s just so stylish AND comfortable (a somewhat rare find in my opinion, at least for the selection in that price range here in Norway)!
I used to use the Ikea wooden hangers but then I discovered velvet hangers. Never going back. Things don't slip off of the velvet ones! The Home Edit even makes velvet lined wooden hangers and I feel like those are the ULTIMATE hangers.
I have had several different ikea sofas, I currently have the applaryd. I love it! It's beautiful, comfortable, stylish. A couple things though, every ikea sofa I've had has had squeaky springs, applaryd included. Sitting down and getting up can be a little noisy. Also, as someone else said, the back cushions are a little hard. But what I love is that the seat cushions are integrated to the base so they dont move and crumbs and dirt don't get buried under them. The fabric is also pretty wash and wear with any spot treatment I've tried.
I love my sheepskin rug (its 4 sheepies sewn together), I've had it for years on my bedroom floor. It has stayed fluffy and doesn't mat up and my 60 pound doodle lays on it all the time and it still looks amazing!
I have 4 of the FJÄDRAR 16x23 and have had them for 10 years! They are amazing! I use pillow protectors inside the cushion covers. I LOVE the Sanela too!
Hey Nick, great video. The Ypperlig is genuinely a designer lamp. That entire collection was a collaboration with the Danish design firm HAY. The lamp is one of the few pieces from the collection still in the regular catalogue. HAY is now owned by MillerKnoll so you're getting some top design at a real value with that lamp.
I am currently rewatching this particular video, especially because I am moving and of course building a brand new ikea shopping list and your recommendations are amazing. But can I just also say how much I love your videos, your humor, you make everything so accessible and nice and light, thank you for that!! also so effortlessly inclusive... way to go Nick
Another great video, Nick. I have the office chair and find it comfy. Also have the sheep skin and I found the "brown" does look a bit purple once I got it home, but still love how much coziness it adds to my space. Shoutout to the "designer looking" Stockholm dining chairs. I have them and always get compliments.
The other great thing about Sanela is that it is 100% cotton velvet! (Or at least the curtains are, not sure about the pillow covers.) This is extremely hard to find!! (I am a natural fibers snob, though even I had to compromise on one set of curtains because there just wasn't a shade in Sanela that fit for the room, but West Elm had some poly velvet curtains that worked...*sigh*.)
Yes! That is what I love about it as well! In fact, even for sowing, the Sanela curtains might be the cheapest way to get full cotton velvet material xD
An IKEA chair that has a designer look and superb quality that often gets overlooked is the FLINSHULT armchair. Especially in what they call brown/beige with what looks like a chevron pattern. I think that fabric color looks more like a neutral grayish-sage. The chair is gorgeous and timeless, the fabric is chic and it is built well. You have to see this chair in person and sit in it to truly appreciate the comfort, quality, and construction. Remember, not all the pieces in your home have to be exactly period matching to the era that you like. This has a little bit mid-century modern vibe, a little American traditional vibe. It's a little on the higher end price point, but well worth it.
I bought the SOLKLINT light to finally! replace boob lights at my back door and hall. Aaaand I buckled on the pendant to replace the foyer chandelier. I just love the effect the fluting gives and the gray tint tones down the glare. Very popular here in New England.
I can 100% vouch for those feather pillow inserts. I bought a bunch for my couch, and made some covers for them from some vintage fabric. Looks really high end I think.
On the topic of hangers I've heard that velvet hangers are a good option, my closet is 50% gorgeous with wood hangers, and 50% a disaster with one of just about every hanger you can possibly imagine. Velvet hangers gently trap clothes with friction so they keep any items that wood hangers struggle to hold onto without needing to use pegs or clips.
@@FrogeniusW.G. Huh - You're right. There are thinner wooden hangers available, but I think I'll stick with the velvet ones. Although - word to the wise, cheap velvet hangers are terrible and wobbly.
I love your videos about Ikea. I always think you find the best stuff there. The store is sooooo big that I get overwhelmed when I go into one, that I'm ready to leave in 10 minutes. LoL...I loved the real sheepskin rug/throw rug. I could use that in my house alot. Thanks for sharing all of this with us.
I have the Langfjall office chair & it's been pretty great throughout the pandemic working from home. I made it more comfortable by adding a bed pillow to pad out the back rest. :)
I love most of these, and will definitely save for my home later . But on the pillow: I for one am allergic to dust, and feather pillows are a killer. Washing the synthetic ones makes them a lot better for me. But that's definitely not a home decor consideration 😄
I have the Solklint table lamp, and I love it. I've thought about putting the semi-flush mount one in the little hallway outside my bedroom as well. It's a really nice set, and the brass isn't too brassy.
I agree with you. I bought two lamp- end table combos with gold medal shades that are see-through. Each has a Edison bulb which is uncomfortable for my eyes. I need to figure out how to recreate some extra shade from the bulbs
The problem with cheap feather down pillow inserts is over time the feathers start poking through, which doesn't feel great and they get everywhere. I switched to polyester for that reason and found them much more comfortable, too. Maybe that's a personal thing, but still be careful buying cheap feather pillow inserts.
Love the FJADRAR pillow inserts, and their natural shaping, reshaping. I've had the wooden hangers for years too, and now IKEA also has shaped plastic hanger overlays for the wooden hangers to give more support for hanging clothes. Thanks for all these tips, Nick! I have several lamps on my list, including the French one with the hand blown glass shade.
I've had the Ypperlig lamp for a few years and it's definitely my favorite lamp, it's so pretty. I direct the light towards the wall, it creates such a nice mood! I dread the moment when the LED will die out and can't be replaced. Therefore, I've learned how to do surface-mount soldering so that when the time comes in 10-20 years I can replace the chip myself instead of having to get a new lamp haha.
Fun /random tip: due to IKEA being a Swedish brand and using a lot of random Swedish words for their products, it could be a fun idea for your ikea videos to translate the products names into English as well so that the names aren't just gibberish xD Just a thought :) The lamp NYMÅNE that you talked about for example means New Moon in swedish Note: some names are just gibberish, but it could make a bit more sense to know what the products names native meanings are :) Edit/ update: A few people has left some good and constructive comments that mentions and specifies "why" and "from where" IKEA products gets their names from and their background / meaning. I had no idea about this but it was interesting to learn so thank you! :) I'm Swedish myself and when I wrote that some of the names are "gibberish", was that from my perspective of having never come across some of the more niche / uncommon words/ product names. It was also from my perspective of watching a lot of non native Swedish speakers (English /American /Canadian RU-vidrs) that often had difficulties pronouncing the products names correctly which added to them sounding made up to me (and presumably for a lot of other non swedes). That is why I took the liberty of assuming that some of the names were scrambled together due to them sounding so abstract and unknown to me, based on my native language / vocabulary. I was not intending on spreading misinformation about IKEA, I was just unaware. Thanks for the likes though :) It would be fun if Nick would see this and would like to start implementing some of the translated Swedish IKEA names and turn them into English for more culture and substance :)
I'm swedish, none of the names are gibberish. This is how Ikea usually name their products: Bathroom articles = Names of Swedish lakes and water connections. Bedding = Flowers and plants. Beds, wardrobes, hall furniture = Places in Norway. Bookshelves = Professions, Scandinavian boy names. Bowls, vases, candles and candle holders = Places in Sweden, adjectives, spices, herbs, fruits and berries. Boxes, wall decorations, paintings and frames, clocks = Swedish slang words and places in Sweden Children's products = Mammals, birds, adjectives. Desks, chairs, swivel chairs = Scandinavian boy names. Fabrics, curtains = Scandinavian girl names. Garden furniture = Scandinavian islands. Kitchen accessories = Fish, mushrooms and adjectives. Lights = Units of measurement, seasons, months, days, shipping and nautical terms, places in Sweden Rugs = Places in Denmark Sofas, armchairs, chairs and dining tables = Places in Sweden Fun fact, some of the products are actually named after their employees.
Hi, Swedish IKEA specialist here. For those interested - the names of IKEAs products are not actually that random at all. The rugs are named after places in Denmark (Ullerslev is a place in Denmark), the outdoor furniture are named after islands in Scandinavia, curtains all have female names (Aina is a woman's name of Finnish origin), sofas are named after Swedish places (Äpplaryd is a place in southern Sweden), and so on. Exceptions exist of course. 🙂
Always great reviews about IKEA products. When you do another one could you review their kitchen remodel if possible? Topics like craftsmanship, sustainability, and durability of cabinetry. Thanks!
Wooden hangers are a lot nicer to use, and they last a lifetime. I have some 80-100 year old wooden hangers and they're still going strong. Even when treated carefully, plastic hangers eventually wear out. After a decade or so the top hook stretches out. If wooden hangers wear out or break they can at least biodegrade.
Can we take a moment to talk about this influx of "3-seater" sofas that only have two cushions, leaving the person in the middle sitting on the crack? Who OK'd this? I don't want to sit on a crack! Do YOU want to sit on a crack? I'm just about at the point where I'm picking furniture, and I'm endlessly frustrated as I find all these gorgeous options, that claim to be 3-seaters, but are clearly oversized 2-seaters...
I also don't want to sit in a crack! I'd rather have a quality 2 seater and a quality chair for the third person. Just got confirmation on my mortgage yesterday and will be a proud first time home owner in May 🎉 It's a tiny home, so I'm carefully planning my space and storage options
Nick, I need a new floor/reading lamp and love the ones you featured. Thank you for another great informative video. I keep 2-3 of the cushion insets on hand. They are perfect for my mini quilts.
I use throw pillows on a couch as extra back support, necessary for many shorter people. Something firmer than down is needed for this use. Love the products shown, particularly the Solklint.
Tips for your first visit: Go on a weekday instead of a weekend, because of crowds Expect to spend hours Plan to include a break in the cafeteria They direct you around the store on a pre-planned route with lots of showrooms at first (rooms and whole apartments set up), with a some conventional departments also, then the cafe, then more of the conventional department store set ups, then the warehouse, then checkout, wirh grocery and as-is departments off to the sides, then a snackbar by the exit. But, there are shortcuts if you want to skip something. There will be map or a schematic drawing of the layout by the entrance - pick one of those up on your way in.
I have to say: I purchased the black silverware from IKEA right after watching the video and I Feel grateful for this channel everyday when I use them !!! 😅 thank you !! Thank you !!!
Love ya channel mate ! Lohal rugs are awesome have two and they are solid ! What about the new Vaghojd lamp ? It’s incredible a big pricey at $230 bucks here in Australia but I’ve seen similar here in big designer boutiques going for upwards of $2000-$5000 love it for high drama or minimalist interiors as it’s huge with the arm at nearly 2.3 meters … Keep up the awesomeness mate 😉
I know you probably don't care about the pronunciation of the names but if you'd ever wanna try pronouncing them more accurately, here's some tips to help. Å is pronounced like almost like the word "awe" Ä sounds like the a in "cat" or "catch" Ö sounds like the i in "bird" words starting with "stj", "tj", "sch", "ch", and "sh" all have the "sh-sound" Sorry for giving advice where it wasn't asked, but it'd be cool to hear you try it!
Re: Flatware. If you spent $280 on the longer lasting set, you would save a lot of money over time, especially if you have to replace an $80 set every 2 years. I'd rather take the plunge and never have to replace it ever. Otherwise, right on Nick.
Yes I ultimately came to that conclusion too. However I also totally get that $280 isn't even an option for a lot of people so the Tillagd is a good choice.
Yep, agreed. My Grandma bought my stainless steel flatware for me, something she started when I was a teenager. She would purchase one place setting per month (in today's money, something around $40 per place setting). So yes, it took more than a year for me to get enough place settings as she was also buying flatware for my sister, as well. Then, my Mom purchased the companion pieces (serving spoons, grapefruit spoons, pie server, etc) for me as a Christmas gift. I've had that same flatware since the late 1980's, and it still looks beautiful.
@@JillWhitcomb1966 Wow what a thoughtful and creative gift. My MIL bought me some nice flatware after seeing I didn't have enough when they came over for dinner. It's just not something you really think about investing in until you get older so what a great gift for a grandma or even parent to get their teen for when they fly the nest!
@@striketochill You are spot-on. My Grandma thought it was important, so she made the monthly investment. Every time I eat a meal, I think of her time, effort, and energy going into buying that flatware for me. It's a really nice memory !
While I usually agree with most of the things you recommend Nick, I have to disagree on the pillows. I bought the IKEA FJADRER on your previous recommendation and they drive me nuts. As soon as someone uses them, and then they get up, I’m left with squished pillows. They’re also not that comfortable to actually lean against because they squish down so much. Perhaps I bought duds but I just can’t get along with them. So I bought replacement pillows, which are much more supple and do bounce back a bit more. I can lean against them and get comfortable and I’m not constantly readjusting them after every use.
I love learning technical interior design terms such as the squishibilty of pillows 🤣 But seriously I get what you are saying, I will try to remember next time I go to Ikea to look at pillow inserts! Closest Ikea to me is 2 hours drive away so I don't get to go often ☹️
Thanks for the video Nick. Very enjoyable as usual. Looking forward to the next one. The YPPERLIG lamp is actually a collaboration with HAY Copenhagen and is a HAY design for Ikea. I own the table lamp version (which seems to be sold out virtually everywhere now) and it looks amazing on a desk.
One thing that is pretty great out of the box but really shines when you change out the legs to something like sleek and chrome i the morabo sofa in leather. (New version of karlstad) beautiful tufted leather minimal sofa that is really comfortable. Great video. Love your Chanel.
To add to what you were referring to with IKEA and furniture designers. My grandfather was the designer for the Poäng chair in the 40’s and was business partners with Ingvar. I know very well of the practicing IKEA has been doing since before they even existed outside of Sweden. They are too big to even begin to fight with.
We bought 2 of the solklint pendants to hang in our entryways (front and back) and I could not believe how affordable they were based on how nice they are! Absolutely love these lights and glad to see them on the list! We also recently bought one of the floor lamps mentioned and the not-marble version of the table lamp mentioned and love those products as well. Great list, might have to add some more stuff to the cart tonight 😏😏
The alefjall office chair deserves a shoutout too, in my opinion! It's a classic silhouette and I find it very comfortable in long hours working from home. It's in the $300 range and verrry worth it!
On the bumerang hangers-I have a ton of them. But they have changed-the older ones are curved like a high-end suit hanger. The new ones are flat and are rougher to the touch-snag alert!
I really wish the Äpplaryd had an ottoman available! I've been in love with the design for a year now and I do need a sofa, now that I've moved ... But I have no room for the sectional and I need somewhere to put my feet :D I wonder what it is about the design that made them decide against including an ottoman in the series.
Ikea has become extremely expensive for its low quality in just 2 or 3 years. There's a not even plywood table I saw 2 years ago and costed 499€ and last week I saw it again and they sell it for 799€. Besides the kind of stuff Nick recommends that can mimic the aesthetics of luxury furniture I really encourage everyone to think twice or thrice before buying anything at Ikea at this moment, since you can find similar stuff with good materials and the difference is not that much, at leat in Europe.
IKEA got into trouble for its reliance on the now-sanctioned Belarusian dictatorship for lumber and forced prison labour. Now they're scrambling to find "economies of scale" elsewhere.
@@Micha-bp5om I can't tell a big company like Ikea. I compared it to local retailers in Barcelona area. Kitchens are a good example. I found a kitchen for 8.000 aprox that almost doubled the sized of one with the same price in Ikea. Plus it included installation further than 100km away, and the quality was a little better (no plastic over the counters, at least silestone, etc.). Don't get me wrong, Ikea stuff is cool ans serves it purpose very often, but considering the current prices I wouldn't go Ikea by default and i'd try to compare prices and quality in other stores.
@@diametheuslambda That may explain a lot probably, but still I think that stuff like a chipboard wood table with oak looking melanine go from 500€ to 800€ is a complete madness and feel like they are taking advantage of the of the global problems.
@@DunmerSG Yes, in Romania where I come from Ikea furniture is also not really a deal. There are many local shops which offer custom made furniture for a better price. In Germany I had to pick Ikea, normal shops had really expensive furniture. I paid for the Ikea 3500€ without the electronics, I hope it is a good quality.
I had the feather inserts from IKEA, worst idea ever! The fabric of the insert is super cheap and the feathers are so hard that poke through the fabric and you could feel them poking your skin. As some time went by the feathers started poking through the cover and I had tiny feather pieces all over my apartment. Seems like a good deal, but definitely the quality is not great.
thank you for the nice video Nick! I got some new ideas for my new home now. Excited!!! I went for brass silverware from HomeSense instead of IKEA. HomeSense has a even better price point and better quality/look on silverware I believe. So if you’re in Canada I think that’s a great place to go to pick silverware 😊😊😊
I like couches and chairs that I can sweep, swiffer, vacuum under so I really like a scaled down couch with a few inches clearance. Your videos are just full of fun photos whether I like the actual style or not.
A lot of Swedes have a sheepskin in their strollers in the winter. Insulates you baby's or toddler's backside. Our dog destroyed one as a puppy, a great way to get out some frustration😅
The last time I invested in dawn feather pillows it was from Costco, and I totally regretted it. All the feathers’ sharp ends would prick my head like needles. I threw them both within two weeks.
Oooh, Ekenaset vs Otio (Article)??? Tough call for me. I am eyeing it in fabric vs leather and am drawn to those Otio angles. Love your content as always!
