You read that right! IKEA by complete accident released the best glass mousepad I've ever used! However IKEA didn't actually release a glass mousepad, they released the VARMBLIXT, a serving tray that with a little tinkering can be turned into a glass mousepad that preforms INSANELY well!
And the best part, it only cost $35.00 CAD. On top of the insane price the performance of IKEA accidental glass mousepad is SO good I've been maining it for almost a month and a half now, and believe me when I say this glass pad is a LOT more than meets the eye! You definitely don't wanna miss this one so enjoy the video and if you end up testing the VARMBLIXT yourself be sure to let me know down in the comments what you think of it!

Alright well IKEA is straight up trolling, turns out the entire VARMBLIXT lineup has been discontinued by IKEA... The tray has been taken down from the CA website and appears to be taken down in other regions. There is some in-store stock currently but since demand spiked so much they are very hard to find sadly. I'll be going back to IKEA soon so see if I can find something similar but in the mean time getting their glasspad is tricky... Shout out to IKEA for trolling the **** outta everyone 💀

Just search for "Ikea glass top" there's sizes like: 108x50cm, 160x48cm, 159x50cm. They're to protect the top of drawer units from mark but hey they could double as a desk protector and mousepad I suppose. Tip: You'll probably still want a deskpad under your keyboard to dampen the sound when you type.

When you create a “specialized” market, the prices are usually higher. Just like how things are marketed to gamers, i.e. “gaming” mouse, “gaming” chair, “gamer” energy drink, etc. There probably isn’t any difference in how IKEA’s product is made, compared to a gaming glass pad. It’s just these gaming oriented companies are marketing it to a specific audience and not as a general product. We all then fall for it, or at least the majority do, and boom! You got yourself an expensive product, that is cheap to make and you have somewhat high yields in profit. I say “somewhat” because if they are only marketing it to a specific market, it’s audience reach will be much lower and out of that audience, not everyone is going to get one from them. So, high profit, but low sale volumes.

That is incorrect, I've owned both the skypad 3.0 and game sense sonar, not only do they have measurably different friction, they feel completely different in practice. Thats not a shot at this IKEA hack, glass pads don't need to be as expensive as they are. And some pads do feel similar to each other.

Bought today after watching your video! I regularly use a Raiden Mid by Artisan, I am a competitive Apex Legends player, with several hours of gameplay and Kovaak. Just recently I was considering purchasing a glass pad but I was hesitant, given the excessive prices on a product that I wasn't sure I would like, given its particularity. I've already had the opportunity to try the glass "tray-pad" I bought from Ikea today and I have no words: certainly faster than the Raiden Mid, but with a control that I would never have expected given the greater speed. I never thought I'd say it, but I much prefer it to the Raiden Mid and it makes me laugh to think that Ikea didn't market it as a real gaming pad, it would have been a crazy success! For glass pads, I'd recommend using UHMW(ultra high molecular weight) polyethelyene. CS Hyde makes a sheet with acrylic adhesive backing, I use that with a hand held sheet metal powerpunch to make dots. They last for months and stay consistent. PTFE will wear down and get flat spots after a while and it will leave a residue on the mousepad. UHMW polyethylene has a similar coefficient of friction to PTFE but it's about 3 times harder.

the VARMBLIX collection was meant to be a short term collaboration with designer Sabine Marcelis. Thats why its unfortunately discontinued. But if you have any viewers in southern Ontario Canada, The Burlington Ontario IKEA has them on sale for $5 right now in their tent sale. Cool video! never thought of using glass.

Nice. I exclusively use glass mouse pads, the Cerapad KIN is atrocious. I am not a fan of the Skypad 3.0, I prefer the Skypad 2.0. The 3.0 is too thin. This cutting board looks about right, looks like it's similar to the 2.0, I'll have to get one to try out for a spare(Oh, I see your note about it being discontinued lol You can always get a sheet of frosted glass cut to spec, around 40-60 bucks or more depending on the size you want). Still have a backup Skypad 2.0 but it's nice to have multiple backups when you use a glass pad. :D

VARMBLIXT = Warm Lightning in Swedish. "Varm" is pronounced the same in English and Swedish. For "Blixt", imagine how you would pronounce the word "Blix" and the last two letters in "Sixt" and that's how you pronounce VARMBLIXT.

To be honest, a serving tray will have probably more integrity than a glass mouse pad, just because it will be moved around and is supposed to hold items, like another glass or dish.

I have run into a similar situation with trading card mats. They are designed to be tossed in a bag and beaten up so they actually have slightly higher quality than most mousepads.

I just spray painted the glossy side! I didn’t do this but I’d recommend putting painters tape over the edges of the top later to prevent paint from getting on it. If you do get paint on the top later you can just scrape it off buf better to be cautions unlike me 😅

wondering if you may be able to take apart the frosted glass version of the GLASSVIK cabinet door (comes in 2 sizes, 60x64cm and 60x38cm) and use the glass panel from that? it's like $40 CAD and the 60x64cm size would be pretty amazing for a glass pad if the etching is as good as the VARMBLIXT
