Ikea x Selkie? Making my *dream* cottagecore dress

I made myself a beautiful Selkie inspired cottagecore dress! I've been admiring Selkie dresses for a few years and after seeing Rachel Maksy's video where she created her own version, I thought it was my turn to give it a try!
I'm so proud of how the big skirt with the ruffle and the bodice with the puffy sleeves came out - I think it's got a bit of a forest fairy/fae vibe with a tiny gothic/dark academia twist and I'm absolutely in love with it! It's always nice when I like how the me-made clothes I sew turn out!
See you in the next one!

Besides all the drama and the monumental effort inserted into the making of the dress it has come out AMAZING. The black bining really sets it off and the styling really suits you, your hair made it oh so much more dramatic. Love it 😀

Truly gorgeous - I'm in awe of how you get the fit so good without someone to help you! And the black accents may have taken lots of work, but totally make the dress unique and stunning - you look like you could step into multiple eras costume drama for any posh picnic or summer occasion 🤩🤩🤩

There’s ZERO immortality around recreating designs by large designers, if you are just a home sewer and you aren’t going to be selling these/they’re just for personal wear. I mean maybe since you have a RU-vid channel and you’re showing US how you made a fake selkie dress it’s different, but impoverished women have been doing this for DECADES. I remember my grandmothers not being able to affford clothes in the latest trends for my parents (their kids), so they would go to the malls, and have the kids pick styles out, then they’d go home and make by hand what they had the ability to reproduce. It’s not unethical to do things like that. I’m not sure why recently suddenly everyone’s in about this being theft… but it’s not. Selkie took those ideas for designs from other creators, and they took them from others, etc, because in art and design absolutely NOTHING is original, and if you aren’t recreating their designs for a profit, and you aren’t using someone else’s labor, there is absolutely zero immorality to recreating clothes you cannot afford, for yourself.

This is how I finally learned to sew (about 40 years ago) after yearning for a dress I would never be able to afford. My mum, who'd been trying my whole life to teach me the skills, told me to go and really look at how it was constructed. Turned out to be simple rectangles (gathered skirt and big sleeves: I did learn how to do gathered sleeve heads - vested interest!) with some darting on the bodice. We found an old cotton bedspread in a lovely soft green at the bottom of the cupboard and I was off. I ended up making variations on the style for a dozen more dresses, including my wedding dress, which I still have. I've just discovered your channel - been following Rachel Maksy for a while too - and I'm re-inspired to get out my sewing machine, maybe buy some patterns (my mum being long gone) and rediscover my old skills. So, thank you!

The dress looks AMAZING! You did a wonderful job figuring out the pattern! The only thing I would change for myself is add padding or interfacing into the sleeves for EXTRA POOF (even though that would make wearing jackets over it very difficult). Also I loved the little cat snore, my tortie cat snores the same way. 😸

Love the dress. I, too, thought that I had gone completely stupid and unable to do winged eye liner any more. NO. I had been using an eyeliner that is slightly softer than what I used to use. Great for filling in, crap for making wings . I recently purchased CoverGirl Perfect Point Plus, and HUZZAH! I can wing my eyes in the car, again!!!

It has a slightly Liberty or Laura Ashley vibe (or would without the black accents) so I was curious to know how much that 8 meters of fabric would cost - £228 for a similar Liberty fabric! Although M&S has a pure cotton Laura Ashley print duvet that gives the same vibe for a mere £95 😅
@Sarah-over-here
@Sarah-over-here 11 месяцев назад
If you use directional fabric like this again, it might be worth considering how the fabric would look with the pattern going hroizontally rather than vertically. You can get away with it with some fabrics. 🙂

I'm 2:33 mins in and you've just said you are going to Frankenstein your pattern from other bits of other patterns. I'm just making it clear, right this minute, I'm so glad its not just me that does this! I cannot drape, or make my own patterns, I'm trying to learn but its very trial and error, and so I'm so happy to hear other people do this too and then just cobble the thing together as best they can!
@lynn858
@lynn858 11 месяцев назад
That's actually a fantastic way to learn to draft your own pattern pieces. One gains some familiarity and understanding just using patterns as intended, but once you start combining and understanding what can and can't fit together, you build a much more nuanced understanding. If you don't already collect them... and you have a chance to buy patterns for incredibly cheap second hand. Grab anything that has interesting pattern shapes. If only for the "how does this work" aspect. I can grab patterns from a couple local thrift shops for 25cents. Unchecked. Generally 80s and 90s. They're not great patterns. But it's an interesting education if that's how you brain works. You could also set up a notification on any local free/cheap online groups for patterns.
@rachelsnee8926
@rachelsnee8926 11 месяцев назад
It's what my mother (and Emily's grandmother) called collifogalling and I don't see it as cobbling things together, but a highly creative synthesis that takes things from the mundane to the extraordinary - own your creativity 😊
@EmilySnee
@EmilySnee 11 месяцев назад
Yay! Another Frankensteining fan! It’s always nice to feel like you’re not the only one, right? Honestly, some might not mention it, but I think plenty of people play with their patterns like this and like @lynn858 said, it’s a really good way to start understanding how patterns work, how to adjust patterns and how to draft your own if you’re interested in learning. And as someone who often has a super clear vision of what I want to make and can never find a pattern that matches my idea, I highly recommend learning to draft patterns along with Frankensteining existing patterns - it’s let me be way more creative while being much less frustrated 😅
