Welcome to my first Ikoria Draft! In this Ikoria Draft I got to draft against humans instead of bots on MTG Arena for the first time, which was a ton of fun! I did tons of analysis on each and every pick, doing my best to discuss every relevant card in the pack, so you know what to do in your own Ikoria Drafts! I ended up with a fantastic deck that was able to make use of Mutate, Keyword Counters, Cycling, and a whole lot of mana fixing to splash some super powerful cards! I ended up playing some epic matches, including 2 against one of my favorite Magic personalities Maria Bartholdi, and I am super excited to dive deeper into Ikoria Draft in the future! The two first games kinda proved what you said, that blue is a very strong color in this set. Damn! On game 3, you conceded after seeing the ram-through but you could have sacced the fertilid and the spell would have fizzled since it was a single target. Also not seing the Mentor pumping effect this same turn was so bad, although they had a ram through of their own anyway so it would have been a blowout in any case. That game 3 was a mess overall, but the board states got so complicated and first drafts are always clunkier so don't beat yourself up ^^ Ikoria hype !

Great point on the Fertilid play, I totally didn't realize that! Yeah, the Mentor pump thing was definitely bad not to see as well. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

Wouldn't sacrificing the targeted 1/1 Fertilid have caused Ram Through to fizzle?

The EV depends on your winrate. I'm not really sure on how it calculates, but I'm sure there's a spreadsheet somewhere.

I don't want to go back in the video counting the damage, but I'm pretty sure you could have crushed him if you had attacked as soon as you had the opportunity with the wurm and the 6/6 in play on game 3. You lost far too many hp with that stall cause of that 2/2 with flying, and yet you had so much pressure on the board a couple of turns before. It wasn't the bad draw that lost you that game imo, you just had to deal with threats as soon as you were up in pressure.

I scrolled to around 58 minutes into the video when I played the Quartzwood Crasher (I'm assuming this is the moment you were referring to) and I have no attacks that are even remotely good. I'd be interested to hear which turn you would have attacked (a timestamp would be helpful) because there is definitely a chance that I missed it.

@@NicolaiBolas I'm looking at 59.10. Nothing was sure there, clearly. Opponent had three mana available and a good board, but I think you could have baited an all out block on the wurm or the crasher, then ambushed with the trick one of the blockers, or even better the 3/2. They had 12hp, so anything counts there. With a perfect block and complete knowledge of your hand, they would obviously have survived and got you on the way back, but the set is new and people have yet to get accustomed with all the combat tricks. At that turn you probably didn't have lethal on board, but I think getting rid of the buffer/give vigilance to stuff and maybe the elephant too, even with sacrificing some of your stuff, would have been a better play than waiting for the opponent to capitalise on the board. You had a really bad luck with all these land draws, that's for sure, and you were right in expecting good draws, but given the situation I think that getting rid of some threats, forcing him into an heavy block to avoid lethal and making him sacrifice some of the board pressure would have been a better move. Also, you could have opened the chance of trampling him over for some damage, keeping the crasher alive with ambush on blockers, generating an x/x as a result and simply stomping him the next turn with an all out attack. If I have time tomorrow I'll go back to it and plan out possible block patterns, to see if there was an opportunity for lethal.

Did you consider ramming the 3/2 and getting the two 4/4 tokens to 3/3 as a result? You did not mention that option in the video. Looking again at what happened after you gave up on that attack makes me even more confident in your chances at 59.10.

@@farfanotto I had the board fairly stable and some decent draws left in my deck. My opponent also had 2 cards in hand and 3 mana so they could easily have had something as well. It is really tricky in spots like that to justify an attack because a good player will almost always make you pay for it. Also, I was at 13 as well, so if my attack goes wrong I could just die. I'd rather try to get a 2 for 1 of some kind with my Ram Through (responding to their Ram Through for example) and win by drawing a few more spells than them.

I think you could spend a bit more time reading cards, especially opponents as it is a new set and hard to know what is possible etc. but really enjoyable video.

I am not judging based on results (I am writing this comment half-way through the video), but with so many cyclers available you cannot be playing more than 16 lands! Even 16 is too much!! You have one 5-drop and a 6-drop and a 7-drop both of which cycle. And 5 more mana sources at 2 and 3 mana. The 3 Fertilids is 2 too many, since you are not really splashing. I would build your deck with at most 15 lands and the mana-rock, just one Fertilid, the 2 mana creatures at 2 mana of course, and add all possible cyclers at the remaining slots.

I had 12 cards that cost more than 3 mana, so I really wanted to be able to hit my lands to cast my spells. 4 drops are also important for determining land counts. Also, Fertilid was partially in the deck to be a good target for Mutate. I think 15 lands would have been way too few, but if I recall correctly my final build did have 16 lands so I definitely caught onto the mana reduction thing by the end.

#MutateComeback A bit late on this video, a couple of days. But nice deck to see. I had a bit fun and drafted the most disgusting deck I ever had the other day. 3 Ominous sea's and one Zenith flare. All in all 17 cycling cards in the deck, 5 counterspells (one being the cycling one, 2 being the 2 mana one that allow me to draw card) 3 Cathartic reunions and a couple of other carddraw spells.... Just speed drew through my entire deck, got out massive Krakens they couldn't handle as early as turn 4 with counterspells to protect it.... UTERRLY disgusting.
