Film TV RAI, tratto da un racconto (1954) di Carlo Cassola e sceneggiato da Marcello Fondato e Giuseppe Lazzari, girato in esterni attorno alla zona di Tirli e Tatti (GR) e mandato in onda il 19-9-1963 nel ciclo di 9 lavori 'Racconti dell'Italia di oggi". Questo TV movie ha diverse copie pubblicate sul Web: credendo di fare cosa utile a tutti gli estimatori di Gian Maria Volonte' all'estero, e a coloro amano la lettteratura italiana nel mondo, la presente copia ha sottotitoli in inglese e spagnolo.

In the early 1960s, Italian National Television (RAI) produced a series of medium-length films curated by Raffaele La Capria titled "Stories of Italy Today," each inspired by stories and novels depicting our country. This one, "Il taglio del bosco" ["Timber cutting"] directed by Vittorio Cottafavi, illustrates one of Carlo Cassola's perhaps lesser-known novels and is interpreted by the great Gian Maria Volontè.
Published in the late Fities and inspired by Cassola's experiences during his time as a partisan, the novel tells a story of ordinary people, reflected also in its simple writing style, devoid of unnecessary embellishments and free from rhetoric or any form of authorial protagonism. It's for this reason that a few lines are not enough to summarize the plot, and it's extremely difficult, if not by using the book's own words, to convey the pure intensity of the life of those people in the Maremma and the deeply suffered, unhealable inner turmoil of Guglielmo as he seeks meaning in the life he has a duty to continue.
Losing someone you love deeply, in the only irreparable way, namely death, is a tragedy with no solutions. Initially, Guglielmo will seek distraction in work, as well as the necessary income for his family. The realization of the illusion will lead to an even greater dismay, another step in his suffering. He will find a way to overcome it, with the poor charcoal worker with whom he will spend his final days at the clearing wood site. It will not be simply saying, as he does, that he has found someone worse off than him. This will be instead the key moment when Guglielmo understands that "work" for his daughters can alleviate his suffering. His family is in fact the residual capital left to him by his wife. It's an obvious thing, but it's not always so, because sufferings blind and reopening one's eyes is difficult. Not everyone succeeds.
Almost all the actors are residents of Tirli, Grosseto, all of them displaying a talent and spontaneity that are difficult to be judged. Gian Maria Volontè plays the protagonist Guglielmo; at the age of thirty, he already demonstrates interpretative qualities and human depths that have never been equaled, and that are the highest possible achievements for other actors to equal him.
A small mention of the song "Life of a Woodsman" sung by Domenico Bartoletti, which is sung during the opening credits.This is in fact an example of the tradition of "storytellers" that once traveled through villages, once very common in Tuscany. Another sign of the care with which this film was made and another demonstration, if needed, of the importance of the neorealist movement on later cinema and television.
This TV movie has several copies published on the web: believing it to be a useful contribution to all admirers of Volontè abroad, and to those who love Italian literature worldwide, this copy has subtitles in English and Spanish.
