IL2 - B-26 Marauders on Guadalcanal, Final Raids on Rataka Bay 

Thanks for watching. These videos were made with the old 4.12. it seems ideal for the BAT if you can get it. Because of the open source expansions and architecture. I still use it with windows 10.

Thank you for watching and for your comment. That's me steering the plane. I don't lock the front wheel during takeoff because this aircraft is unpredictable and unstable. I have to give it full throttle and hard left rudder to keep it from falling into the ground immediately after takeoff - until it gains a few hundred feet. For these reasons I leave the front steering loose and control with rudder. One mistake and it was over. And I flew the above mission a number of times crashing on takeoff and not making it home.

@@anitek422 ну и как Вам ил-2 1946 и бзб в сравнении с dcs? Очень интересно Ваше мнение. Я играл в ил- 2 ещё в универе 15 лет назад. Недавно купил хороший комп и начал опять. Очень так же как и 1946 нравится бзб. БЗС как-то не заходит. В том числе в БЗС у меня нет ощущения что летаешь на железке. Dcs поставил бесплатную версию, пока ничего не покупал.

@@МаксимАлександрин-м2р - IL2 требует меньше времени для бега, а DCS - это монстр, требующий большей мощности и гораздо большего терпения. Мне нравится создавать свои собственные миссии и контролировать ход игры, поэтому старый Ил-2 1946 года с модами от SAS был идеальным вариантом. Are you referring to the float planes in the target area @7:37? 🙂 Rataka Bay on Santa Isabel Island in the North Solomon Islands was one of the homes of "Washing Machine Charley". The nickname given by Marines on Guadalcanal to the noisy Japanese float planes and bombers that would appear at night over Henderson Field. It was a significant seaplane base and targeted repeatedly by the 69th Bombardment Squadron so I put the planes there. In fact I put everything there including the bomb craters. @@davidsike734 I see why they look that way. Go to full screen and you'll see that they are actually 4 engine Kawanishi H8K floatplanes. But the Japanese did have 6 engine float planes as well. I don't have any of those in this vid.

Henderson Field was originally built by the Japanese on Guadalcanal because it placed their planes in range to interdict our supply routes to Australia and New Zealand. For that reason the decision was made to take it and hold it. A line was drawn beyond which the enemy could not be allowed to operate and Henderson was the southernmost outpost on that line. The Marines took it and the Japanese never got it back. Without victory on Guadalcanal all of the expansive Japanese plans and victories in the pacific would eventually be curtailed because new Zealand and Australia could not be interdicted. The B-26's at Henderson were part of the Cactus Air Force that denied the Japanese control of Henderson Field and the Solomon Islands. In harm's Way - they helped change history.

As I understand it, the B-26 had better payload at higher speeds, better combat survivability and higher bombing accuracy than the B-25 did. In the ETO it ended up with the lowest combat loss rate of any bomber, despite being a medium altitude daylight bomber. The issues with the B-26 were mostly due to it being both a very hot airplane that early in the war, the instructors not being properly trained on engine out procedures, and a really really nasty tendency of the early Curtiss Electric props to fail in a war that made them run away instead of feather. So, basically, after getting out of a trainer with a top speed of, maybe 180mph, a trainee pilot could find themselves trying to manage a plane with a dead engine in super-drag mode, a minimum controllable speed of 150mph+ and an instructor pilot in the other seat who had never actually be taught what to do if that happened. Not a good situation all around. Now it could be flown on one engine. Apparently that was one of the strengths was, if you lost an engine it could still keep altitude, but the crews needed to be taught its performance limits when on one engine before they could fly it. Compare that to the B-29 training program, and aircraft that had an even higher wing loading than the B-26, and engines that would burn the wing off it fires weren't contained, and it had a much lower training incident rate, because by that time they had experienced instructors handling the training. In 1940/41 it was still the halt leading the blind.
