The video has brought back beautiful memories of my wonderful childhood in Ilford in the 1950's and 60's. I emigrated to Canada in the 1970's and visited Ilford in 2000. I felt like a stranger.

@ George. George if you felt like a stranger 24 years ago you would NOT believe the shi#hole the place has become today over run by Western HATING invaders of a similar religious nationality!!! It’s a FUC#ING DUMP now mate and allowed to be such by our wonderful UK government who have allowed this invasion to happen 😠😠😠😠 And those poor lads who gave their limbs and lives in WW1 and WW2 will be turning in their graves ☹️

It's nice to see history of how my local towns of ilford seven kings and Goodmayes used to be dating back to the early 1900s. Some buildings are still present but some have been destroyed by rockets during the war times.

what a treat. I was born in Barkingside pre-war, so remember some of the pictures from there. The boating lake in Valentines Park where my brother sailed his boat. I remember watching the fire at Harrisons Gibsons from the church tower in Grosvenor Road in 1959. It was huge and the heat affected the shops across the road.

Ahh, memories. I'm sure Fairheads closed later than 1988 though? I swear I remember going in there during the 90's for various craft things. I remember the staff being a bit grumpy and lots of big knickers, but it was a useful shop.

You're right, Fairheads was around until December 2008. They were selling those big knickers past the millennium!

I know times change but was once a beautiful town now lies in tatters down to unscrupulous councillors and bad architecture and it so overcrowded it almost feels suffocating.

It looks better now that multiculturalism has entered and made Ilford a way better place. It looks like a shit hole before.

Before cars suffocated the streets and everyone concreted their front garden to park the car. The edwardian streets of Ilford look terrible now, hardly a front garden left, but plenty of BMW's

Hi John, great video mate. It breaks my heart to see how Ilford has gone and know that my parents who moved there from the east end in 1939 would turn in they're graves if they could see it now. still, it is the place I was brought up and there will always be a place in my heart for it.

Wow. Everything looked so peaceful and beautiful back then. Can’t believe how long Newbury Parks had that arched thing above where the station is, that the bus drives under.

Very enjoyable, except that Fairheads closed in 2008 (film states 1988). My neighbour worked there until the end.

Ilford was lovely; very nice shops: Wests, Lilley & Skinner (used to get my Startrite shoes there), Owen Clarkes art supplies on Cranbrook, Harrison & Gibson (Room at the Top)! Used to have swimming lessons in the baths and as a teenager spent many hours at the Palais dancing to Motown, James Brown etc etc. Had my first haircut in the Cranbrook. Had my first Sat job in M&S in Ilford. Fond memories of another town that has been destroyed by ‘diversity’ like Barking, Dagenham, Romford and London in general.

What a wonderful and fascinating trip back in time. Many thanks for posting this great slide show! I was a Fulhamite myself (up the Cottagers) but these evocative shots also come very close to my heart. I imagine Herr Hitler's more than usual interest in poor little Ilford, taking expensive rocket swipes at it in both V1 and V2 versions, was due to the eponymous photographic film factory that took its name from the town, and which was a major supplier of film to the RAF. The factory I believe was situated not far from where the main line station is now.
@dartskipper3170
@dartskipper3170 4 года назад
The Germans were also aiming for Plessey's. My Dad's best friend, Ormie Plant, worked for Ilford Film during the War and was considered to have a reserved occupation because Ilford Films was the only factory making high speed film for the RAF, both Bomber Command and the Reconnaissance Squadrons.

First place (1982) was a flat backing onto Valentine's Park. Ilford, Seven Kings, Goodmayes, etc. were nice places to live then. Now the whole district is one of squalor because of third world mass immigration. It's shocking what has happened. Don't anyone try and tell me diversity is our strength..

How stunning the buildings and roads in Ilford were in those days. The character has been completely decimated IMO. It's time for The local council to conserve what's remaining including the 1930's houses. Would love to see the houses being restored instead of completely changed. Timber stained glass windows and doors at the least. No more PVC plastic IMO.
@IlfordRetro
@IlfordRetro 4 года назад
PVC has got a lot to answer for the country over! I read recently that the Town Hall was once earmarked for demolition in the 1960s. That really would have been a kick in the teeth for Ilford's architectural heritage.
