Gone is the emotion she shared with Sergei. Their love was so very obvious when they skated, the way they would look at each other, perfectly in sync with each other. This is just skating together. I'm missing the magic.
I agree, it's just hard to watch her with anyone other than Sergei, they were just so perfect. I'm glad she has someone in her life but I think that Sergei will always be her great love.
I think a part of me will always be sad to see her dancing with anyone other than Sergei, but I'm also so proud to see her triumph over sorrow and continue with her life.
KelleyBelle Katia is one of the strongest women (emotionally, mentally) I know of. How she not only survived that horrible tragedy but also learned to really thrive again ..... I have no idea. For someone so tiny, her strength is truly something to respect ..
It was wonderful to see Katia back on the ice as a pair’s skater. I was on pins and needles when her various partner’s would lift and carry her over the ice. It was always Weird for me to see Another Man Skating with “Our Beautiful Katia”. In addition She and Sergei Grew-up! Skating Together and we knew what a Great Pair’s Team! They Were. Katia and her New Partner’s performed very well but it still wasn’t Sergei. She’s an Extraordinary young woman in every sense of the word. In closing: She will always have my Respect, Love, Support, and Admiration. Katia: I Salute You .
She must have thought of Sergei in every lift, every movement. What a brave lady, to skate again, while the love of her life skated in sprit only beside her. A true love story xx
What gets me when seeing these two together is how Ilia has taken to pairs skating. It's not easy for a singles skater to suddenly take on pairs like that, yet he always looked comfortable in that role.
kamwrites that’s EXACTLY the same thought I had while watching this. Very very seldom do you find a singles skater who can transition to and successfully pull off pairs skating. Ilia seemed to do it with such ease, strength, beauty, and grace. I think he’s able to “present” Katia beautifully.....although honestly, I still somehow think Sergei did it better..😔. Maybe just my love of G & G..❤️❤️
she was strong being a single mother then learning to be a single skaters thats unbelieveable while being in a foreign country wow props to her for just rebuilding her life from scratch
I agree although she had great support on and of the ice her accomplishments are amazing! It took her a while but she improved so much as a single freestyle skater. She is my favorite women's freestyle skater of all time. I was sad to hear about her divorce but she is remarried now to husband number 3. I wish her much happiness. Everyone deserves to be happy in life. ❤
Words are useless when you look at Katya....she is Great...in her victory, in her tragedy, with her girls, with her new life, such a fragile from the first look and such a strong inside...unbelievable! It's not easy for Ilya, guys, be in charge of 3 beautiful women, be a father, a stepfather, a somehow shadow of Sergei..common, give him some credit and he is Olimpic champ! And please don't compare to Beroev (Ice Age show) who is so much in love with himself cant put him even close to 2 Great Men
They performed at the 1999 Stars on Ice in Columbus and we went to see the fabulous skaters. It was wonderful. When we go through the trials and tribulations in life, and we don't feel we can go on, we are given as many chances as we want and/or need.
WOW. I had no idea that anyone wasn't thrilled to see Katia & Ilya skate this. I was so happy to see them interact that I cried watching them. Daria looks like Sergie, Liza like Ilya. Both seem well adjusted. Obviously thay are happy together.

I've been in Ballet from 3 months after I turned 6 years old. The journey to perfection is in itself is the essence the core. What you see is from the core and the essence. Ballet Dancers and Ice Skaters know, that perfection is unattainable. But in the drive for perfection, what is seen gives the vision of perfection.

She called Sergei "a sweet angel" and thanked him for "helping Mama get to the happiest place she has ever been..." Career, love and family?! Daria did not get to know Sergei since he died when she was three. She knows Sergei through Katia. What she wrote tells more about Katia's love for Sergei in a span of over 30 years. Katia has one soulmate/twin flame only. Her marriage with Ilia unfortunately didn't work out....

С уходом Сергея пропало волшебство Он был главным при этом скромно оставаясь в тени Кулик катается с Гордеевой красиво но как-то пресно... А Сергей дарил нам ледовую сказку...
Мне очень понравилось их катание, я даже и не ожидала, что Илья, такой хрупкий с виду молодой человек, так красиво, легко, и сильно будет поддерживать свою Катю... Совершенно другое впечатление от их совместного катания, чем когда Илья катался один... Я очень рада, что это было в их жизни, это счастье, пусть даже и ненадолго...

Ruth Annabelle: I agree with some but not all of your points. Agree 100% with giving credit to her for moving on and finding happiness with someone else. In the wake of Grinkov's death, I thought it ridiculous, and unfair, when a lot people said, "Oh, she'll never love someone else that way again." Every time it was even rumored Katia was seeing someone, people would bring that up. She was 24 years old when Sergei died and with a child to raise. Many people, young, middle-aged and elderly, go on to fulfilling new relationships after the loss of a partner. There is something magical about first love, and that showed on the ice with G&G. But making a long-term life with a partner is an achievement in itself, a hard one to do these days, and more so for celebrities. Katia and Ilia appear to be doing so. Good for them! As you acknowledge, they have their own special chemistry on the ice. That said, Kulik's competitive achievements were as a singles skater. Grinkov was a pairs skater -- with Gordeeva, a 2-time Olympic champion and a 4-time World champion. Each man was among the greatest within his own discipline. No need to compare! And you are VERY WRONG about the Celebration of a Life. Celebration of a Life was held three months after Sergei's death. Katia was not involved with, much less married to, Ilia at the time. The event was cathartic for her, for the skaters who participated, for their coach and choreographers, and for fans. I could count on one hand the number of celebrity deaths which have left me in what I can only call mourning, and Sergei's was one of them. Friends of mine who were also serious fans of the sport were likewise deeply upset by his death. I've read Katia's autobiography; I remember the emotional interviews with various members of Stars On Ice. Katia was not forced to do that show, and the skaters who participated in it were honored to do so, Ilia among them, I'm sure. Most or all of her skating colleagues would have been unable to attend the funeral in Russia, and Celebration of a Life allowed them to say a formal goodbye to their friend. Doing those performances that night was not easy for Katia, but it was a healing experience. Katia said she felt Sergei's presence with her during the Mahler program. (Which, btw, I count as the single most moving skating program I have seen in almost 50 years of following the sport/art.) Also: I'm pretty sure the money from the show went to Katia and Daria. In the immediate wake of her first husband's death, it was unclear if Katia would be able -- or would want -- to make a living as a singles show skater. The skills set for pairs skating and singles skating overlap, but are not identical.
Nice reply. She is special and Ilia is very blessed to have her. What G&G had was definitely unique and precious and will never be nor can it ever be duplicated. Most people know that and that it was just a matter of healing and finding her heart for the ice again. God bless them both and God bless Ilia for stepping in and being willing to take her hand and give her a new life.
You're so right!! she moved on. I'am really happy for her that she has really managed to continue with her life. They have a daughter together and a whole life / She definitely remembers her late hu sband but her new life is with Ilya and her family / A comparison between two very different men is unappropriated .
Thank you for this clip! I have attended only one "Stars On Ice" show but I was lucky enough to be there the year that Ilia and Katia performed this. To me, it's a perfect routine, a beautiful combination of music, choreography and the skaters, of course. So great to see the rehearsal as well.
I remember after Sergei passed she swore off ever skating pairs again, but seeing her find love again and seeing her skate with another love of her life was amazing.
Tammy Toomey, According to Wiki today (23 Feb 2018), Gordeeva and Kulik are married 2002 - present, and so is the Google Search info, though funnily enough yesterday I also came across info saying they were divorced (hope the divorce's fake news).
We will always love our skating sweethearts, Katia and Sergei. Unfortunately Sergei was taken from Katia and Daria and us far too soon. Katia mourned (and I'm sure continues to mourn) his loss. She has found happiness again. There is nothing wrong with that. I, for one, am happy that she did. And comparing Ilia and Sergei is comparing apples and oranges. They're different in many ways, but alike in the most essential one: They both make Katia and Daria happy.
There is still something missing from this. Sergei would always keep an eye on her and would always be very gentle, caring, romantic yet so natural about every movement with her. These are all missing from them. Looks like Ilia looks more comfortable on his own....
Because he was actually a singles skater. Sergei was specifically trained as a pairs skater, illia is only doing pairs with her so it’s not going to flow and look the same. Just like Katia looked a bit awkward doing singles, because she had done pairs her whole life
God that was so horrible. It took a lot of guts for Katia to do what she did, especially being in so much pain from the loss of Sergei. I think Sergei would be happy knowing that Katia continued to skate after his death. It had to be difficult to do that at first. I'm happy that Daria has a little sister now too!!!

Мне очень жаль Сергея, но к Илье вы несправедливы. Он одиночник и стал в пару. Ведь фигуристу мужчине это вдвойне сложнее и ответственнее. Он должен прежде всего удержать партнёршу, и научиться делать поддержки. Илья очень нежен и трогателен с Катей. И терпелив. В интервью Катя о Сергее сказала, что он очень уверенный в себе мужчина. Это редкое качество у мужчины. Думаю такую женщину, как Катю сложно завоевать. Думаю Илье в этом смысле это удалось. И разница в возрасте ему не помешало. Мне очень понравилось выступление болеро.
@@XXX-ep4pq а я читала, что у Сергея рост был 185, у Ильи 180, а у Кати 157. Но мне кажется, что рост и возраст тут не причем. Главное чтобы они были счастливы. Вообще я восхищаюсь Ильёй. Покорять такую женщину после такой ее истории любви, это круто. И в пару стать, и разница в возрасте и дочь от первого брака. Молодец. У него тоже важное для Кати качество в мужчине. That divorce was so quiet for so long that it cannot be good. She is usually very open to interviews and if it was an amicable growing apart she would have told People magazine about it within a few years. I have heard absolutely nothing from any skater or any source and only found out about it yesterday, which is crazy. Where was People magazine, not covering the divorce of two Olympic athletes when it happened?
@@ravenel2 Katia said in an interview in the early 2000s that she wanted to keep her life more private. She said in her own words that after Sergei died, her agents told her to write the book my Sergei and that she didn’t understand what was happening around her. Soon all the public attention became a burden to her and it was awful. Her and illia had to hide their relationship for 2 years. So it’s obvious she wouldn’t want to make her life so public when she clearly regrets how public Sergei’s death was made. Plus, who on earth would want to go online and tell the world about their divorce?
To be fair with Ilia I think it's really difficult to be in a relationship with someone who has been in a much publicized, much loved pair that's GG, he was young when he married katia, only 22 , I think he fell inlove and just took on the responsibility that Sergei left. 2015 and he's just 40... they are divorced and well, maybe Sergei will always be Katia's one true love but Ilia was a selfless man who loved her and as well and their daughters.
Very true. And it's always difficult for people when their spouse was a widow/widower and would not be with them if their spouse was still alive of course. They feel like they are living with a ghost and I'm sure Ilia always felt like Sergei's ghost was right there.

The fact that no one forced Ilia to step into the void left by Sergei’s death is a noble act, something today’s younger generation has no respect or understanding for. Ilia knew he was always going be 2nd olace to Sergei’s memory, yet he still stepped into that role to provide as happy a life as possible for someone he loved. That is an act worthy of respect and admiration, not snarky comment.

Katia said that all the public attention became a burden to her because she was just trying to love but she felt that she couldn’t. She was very stressed and couldn’t handle it. Poor illia, I’ve seen such nasty things written about him of disgusting people comparing him to Sergei and making up lies to slander him. Very sad. I saw this performance and knew they were in love, before they ever announced it. You could see it, and I was so happy for them. They looked so good together
It's easy to see why Katya ultimately had to give skating up. Skating alone wasn't the answer. Skating with another man wasn't the answer. It's like the skating with Sergei was forever frozen in time.

That man is a skater and he understands what G&G were and is mature and man enough to know that he and Katia are the present. They have a wonderful family and they love each other. Oh boy, what a difference in comparison. Sergei is a hard act to follow. But there is no flow, grace. You can see they are trying but all I get is awkwardness. Sorry G&G spoiled me. I shouldn't be so critical. Also, true love does not die. Sometimes memories (and we always remember the good stuff) can intensify love even more when the person is no longer with us. So, under the guise of moving on and she should, the Sergei love was still there.
I haven't read all of the comments, but Sergei was her first love and she started skating with him when she was 10 ( I think), and was an innocent young woman when he died. She is a grown woman now and has lived through heartbreak, and Ilya is not a pairs skater! You can't compare the two, but either way, I love them all!
I always loved them each for their own merits but had no idea they skated as a pair. What a beautiful resolution to the sad story of her great loss. What a performance as well.

Out of all the comments I read, I find it interesting no one is concerned about the physical aspects of this. Sergei was a big man compared to Kulic. He does not look as if he should be lifting her, especially considering he is a singles skater where he never learned to balance the weight of another human being over his blades. I'm glad no tragedies occurred. As for their relationship- Did people honestly expect a 24-year-old widow to remain chaste and miserable for the rest of her life?
TheChopsinator tragedies? Grinkov was 6 feet tall, Kulik is 5'11". One inch shorter. He is plenty fit and strong to lift a 5'1" Katia, and lifts have as much to do with proper positioning and leverage as they do the size of the person. Not to mention that they are surrounded by skating experts of all relms guiding them with this program. He looks, and is, in this video, perfectly capable of doing a beautiful show like this with her as his partner. Many skaters cross over when training with dance and pairs type skating, especially for ice shows. The word tragedy seems a tad dramatic, just enjoy the skating.

Sorry to be the bearer of sad news folks...but February People Magazine 2018 Special Edition...Goordeeva and Kulik DIVORCED IN 2015! That explains ALOT(her skating with Pelletier, Petrov, Zimmerman, Dmietriev.,as well as her daughters). The entire family performed "Stars on Ice" 2005,returning together in '06 and '07. The final Kulik FAMILY performance "Take me Home"(w Ilia, Katia and daughter Liza skating-included daughter Daria Grinkov as commentator)Daria,now 25,changed paths, retiring from competitive skating in order to focus on education- completing college, graduating with honors, and in 2016,married, wanting to pursue a family of her own.Liza, 16, continues to skate competitively; speculation of bids for a possible future Olympic attempts continue Ilia's last major and superb,but solo performance was his 2016, in "Legends on Ice". Katia continued through 2017, skating w Pelletier and others as partners. Seems now, people know why... Goordeeva has been quoted in her book(and subsequent movie, "My Sergei"), that "Those days with Sergei, before he died, were the best of my life,and I know that no matter what I do in the future, I will never have what I did with my Sergei I will never have happiness in life that I had when I was with him. Never.Even skating for me now,is no goal,it's just a job". If this remained/remains her attitude, her relationship and marriage to Kulik was destined to fail before they ever even married. (Goordeeva WAS involved, she starred on a Russian t.v. program in 2009, while married to Kulik.-"Ice Age 2"( the Russian form of USA's "Dancing with the Stars",but on blades).She was paired with the gorgeous-and incredibly similar in appearance to the late Grinkov-Russian, actor, Egor Boreov. Rumors ran WILD,as Boreov was the Brad Pitt/George Clooney/Hottest leading male actor in Russia at the time(and still is!)...AND he was single.However, Goordeeva was already married to Kulik.Check out some of Goordeeva/Boreov's incredible,breathtaking routines on youtube-especially "My baby You", "If I Should Love Again", and "Sex Bomb". Besides adding a few clear nods to the late Grinkov in their numbers, the two REALLY did sizzle (amazing the ice didn't melt into a pool of water under them!). You are mistaken. As well as Gordeeva, Beroev was married to a Russian actress during the ICE AGE Project. Well he is still married to her. And btw, his wife also participated in this Thing and she could witness the sparks between Egor and Katya, which ofc made her jealous.
This sounds like speculation disguised as information, due to being peppered with a few facts. You couldn't even get the information on Boreov's marriage correct, and nowhere is it stated that Daria is married. Prove that Gordeeva had an affair. If you can't, you are no better than any nasty gossip, and a schizophrenic one at that.
It's like she's afraid to let go of herself with Ilia, possibly out of feeling it wiuld be a betrayal of Sergei. Or possibly because she didn't want to be dishonest eith Iliain saying it was only him in her heart when Sergei will always be there. Such a difficult path for her and for Ilia. No one can replace Sergei. Ever.

THANK YOU!!! I know Zhulin has always been a playboy, but please, let's have some foundation before we start sullying the Katya's reputation and disrupting their family harmony. I'm sorry, but unless she comes out and says that she had an affair with Zhulin, I refuse to believe any of that crap. What she had with Sergei was so real and I don't think Katya's the type of person to jeopardize that. Nor do I think would she do that to Ilia.
AnyaAngie .... try reading her book, "My Sergei" or watch the documentary about their life together here on RU-vid - Ilia is from Russia, too, so of course they knew each other! He's been 11 years younger than Sergei, though, but even as a teenager he had a little crush on Katja (lol!) ... I can understand that he kept it to himself, though, because everyone knew that G and G were an item.
