Ilia Topuria has announced that he will retire in 5-7 years. This explains part of why he wants these big super fights so soon. Islam Makhachev, Conor McGregor, Khabib Numragomedov, Max Holloway, and Canelo Alvarez are all fighters that Topuria wants to fight.

I think we're going to see more these new gen fighters retire younger than the older gen. The game is changing.

It would be one thing if they were trying to preserve their bodies and brains, but I think it has more to do with not wanting to lose. A bad loss on your resume hurts worse than just not having enough defenses. That's I think why everyone wants to be a double champ. Hit double champ status, then spend the rest of your middle age talking big and not having to really back it up. Now, is that mindset indicative of a younger generation raised to put a premium on appearance? I don't know. I'm not a psychologist.

Hopefully. It's not fun watching guys like BJ and Tony and Bigfoot ruin their future health by being so stubborn and not objective at all about their abilities post-prime. I think promoters need to take some responsibility too and not let these guys who clearly don't have it anymore still fight. No one wins in those scenarios: the fighter in question gets pummeled, the fighter who wins gets no credit for beating up someone whose washed and the fans have to witness a legend get dismantled for no reason. Take the GSP route fighters. It's better that way

Most athletes do not have the will power to stay retired. None of the people have managed to retire on top except GSP and Khabib. And even GSP was ready to come back for the right opportunity. Athletes get addicted to it. People underestimate the enormous amount of willpower it requires to walk away forever while on top. Ceujdo couldn't do it. Silva couldn't do it. Jones hasn't done it. Yet. We'll see.

@6tiple6ix6afia
@6tiple6ix6afia 2 месяца назад
@goat7728 So what? Nothing you said has EVEN 1% relevance to this comment. IT IS ABOUT BEING RETIRED. Also you are OBJECTIVE wrong. The belt was vacated. Therefore both people fighting are valid champions for winning. There is, again, objectively nothing substantial about your (wrong) opinion (lemme guess you are unaware that it is not up for debate that opinions can actually be quite literally wrong). There is zero difference between Gane getting the belt after Francis vacating and then losing to Jones, or Jones and Gane fighting for a vacated title. So because you literally (wrongly) espoused that it is less substantial to win the title this way, then you are (objectively) saying that the first ever champions and subsequently the second logically, are not as legitimate then. For example, Holly Holm's championship win is not as important now because she only beat Rousey, and Rousey never won that belt. She was GIVEN the belt for free, and using your logic, she only ever beat number 1 contenders RIGHT? You flat out said that it is not legitimate unless YOU BEAT THE CURRENT CHAMP. Which UFC champion did Rousey beat for the belt? Oh, none? Therefore none of her defenses mattered, because she never won the belt, and everyone she fought while holding it were #1 contenders. So logically, Holm never beat a legitimate champion who won the belt. So no title holder in that division actually ever beat anyone who won the belt from someone who won the belt right?

32 is the perfect age to retire if you already had the belt. The prime of a fighter arguebly ends around 33-35 usually anyways, so it makes sense. That why he called Volk an old man, because he knew 35 is pretty old for a 145er, and his chances are against Volk are the best someone ever had, since he also just came from a KO loss on top of the age.

Very based thing to do actually. A lot of these guys start very young. Illia made his debut at 19. By 32 he'll have 14 years of trauma and wear and tear on his body. Not only that but retiring young gives him ample time, while he's still in his prime, to pursue an actual stable career like going to school or opening his own gym. Another thing is that fighters are extremely expendable and fans have a short memory. Unless you do something exceptional like Volkanovski or build a memorable character like Diaz bros, you'll likely be forgotten in a year or two following your retirement. Nobody but diehard fans of the sport remembers or cares about Chris Lytle or Thiago Alves or even more recent retirees like Jacare and Benavidez.

Their fighting career is maybe at MOST 20% of their life why extend that unnecessarily and have potentially even more health issues for the remaining 40-60 years of your life. All of these are extremely winnable opponents for Topuria after seeing how he's performed in his career. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets over 5 title defenses and retires undefeated at 32.

You are totally correct. I think if it wasn't Khabib's mom telling him he needed to retire that he would be back also. These guys are so competitive that I don't believe they would retire for long. I mean Izzy was going to take this long break and then he was agreeing to fight on 300. He may retire for some time, but there is always someone new coming up and these guys can't admit when their time has passed.

Hey you said “GSP before he made his comeback”… I have two questions. Number one - are you referring to when he came back at middleweight and took the belt off Bisping and then re-retired? Number two - a) do you honestly consider GSP’s one fight comeback a real comeback and b) is that really a negative thing since GSP, during that mini comeback, got paid good money, and became one of the view fighters to ever be a two division champions? Just curious

Retiring early, protecting a legacy isn't that respect worthy in my opinion. Guys like khabib will always have that question mark over their head over how far they could have gone. Meanwhile tony ferguson took risks, went as far as he could, and will have no doubts after he leaves. I'm not saying that guys should be staying well into a 6 fight losing streak, but the idea of protecting records and legacies is exactly what ruined boxing.

You know, Mike Tyson was also very short for heavyweight, but because of his style and body build, he never had a problem because of that. Yes, reach does matter, but Ilia is thick boned and muscle heavy, he naturally weighs 80-82 kgs, he has to lose a loot every time for weight ins, plus he has many fights in lightweight in his career, so I don’t think it will be that kind of a problem for him to do light weight.

Just because he says he'll retire doesn't mean he will. Conor has retired like 8 times. GSP retired and then unretired. Uriah Faber too. Lots of guys have plans and then the plans change. Take it with a grain of salt.

i think 33-36 should be the age of retirement for most fighters, heavier weight classes, of course, can retire later 35-38. i think Topuria should focus on featherweigth, if he can fight 2-3 times a year he can get close to Aldo's record by the time he's 30, then he moves up to lightweight and tries to make history. Topuria could become the featherweigth goat with 7-10 defenses, and the ligthweith goat with 4-5 defenses. He could become the undisputed GOAT of the sport, but i think he will try to get these big fights sooner then later and will have a smaller legacy.

These guys are extremely competitive by nature and stepping away from competition without a new directive for that passion can bring the fighter back out of not finding a new competitive drive. DJ Might Mouse understands this very well and plans to step away but into gi grappling and pursuing his competitive drive there. They are human, I wouldn't stop competing if it what I love too without finding a new passion. I will believe him when he announces something in replace of fighting come the end of the next 5 years. Even Khabib had to burry his head into spear heading a new organization and bringing up fighters to distract himself. Humans aren't meant to just sit around and do nothing with stacks of money regardless of age, we like to do things in this world as we should. Lose or win or in sacrifice of our health.

Luke Thomas mentioned that when speaking to fighters the one thing they had in common is that they wanted to make some money get out of this game as quickly as possible. It’s worth noting that fighters have said this in the past re Amir Khan in boxing but they ended up chasing a title. Although slightly different, Henry Cejudo couldn’t resist coming out of retirement.

Once they become champ, normaly they take a little longer to fight again. I think its a mental thing. First you need all the new champ hype to go away, once you do all the media all over the place. Then you need to get that fighter mentality sharp again cause everythng you did prior, was to achieve the belt. So you need to get the "hunger" back.

A smart move. As a champ, you have all the leverage to push your life forward, knowing that it will continue after you reach 35 or 40 years old, but your fighting career will be over. It's up to the fighters to set themselves a better future, enduring the less brain damage as possible. Acting, politic, publicity, investing, coaching, getting accepted in any university you want, modeling, really anything becomes available once you get that champ fame. Most of them do not do that because they know nothing else than their fight life. They struggle with their professional identity outside of being a fighter. But really, you'll HAVE to be something else anyway, very soon, so... Better see your fighting days as a springboard rather than an endgoal.

What do you mean the UFC being lenient and let him have a “super fight” they are going to let him challenge Sean whenever he wants. Sean can’t sell PPVs to save his life. Rankings don’t mean shit and Dana’s a joke. If it made Dana an extra 5 dollars he’d try and sell us Ferguson vs. Topuria.

Many fighters will fight for as long as their health allows it regardless of how much money they made (Floyd, Manny, Bernard Hopkins, Anderson Silva, even Andrei Arvsloski)… I know MMA fighters like Andrei and Anderson aren’t as wealthy as the boxers, but they have wealth and other streams of income yet they didn’t want to stop fighting even when losing… I also feel the UFC is more responsible for Conor not fighting than his actual willingness to fight

I think Ilia can back it up for sure. He has so much skill and he has shades of Strickland and Whittaker in that he has amazong boxing offense and defense like sean and is anti wrestling like whittaker, what I can see him struggling with are dangerous kickers like Yair but he has many ways to win that fight as well. I also think hes gotten better at defending kicks after thst Jai Herbert fight

This is interesting as we know Ilia Topuria's family wealthy ,when you think of Conor he came up poor so he put the work on (not to say ilia hasn’t) he makes it to the UFC and he's extremely active. Nowadays Conor is set for 500 more years hes filthy rich and we don't see him that often, I wonder if since ilia doesn’t have a reason to go out there and rack up performance bonus and fight 3 times a year. the drive isnt the same but nonetheless this is a smart move to retire before you end up like TiIto Ortiz!

35 is the age for smaller fighters. Leaving 3-5 years on the table during your prime is dumb unless you are already set for life, money wise.
