Great episode. Thanks for being real. Most people in the industry wouldn't show this. The biggest buck I ever shot got away and I know he died. That was about 15 years ago and it still haunts me.
Thanks for showing. I admire your humility in sharing with us! I've been there, done that. This does unfortunately happen. You sharing what you believed to be the cause of the bad shot, will help others to not make the same mistakes. We owe it to the animals that we pursue, to make the most ethical shots. Thank you Torry, for the teachable Information!
Excellent video!! This right here is complete realism, and I personally know exactly how you feel. I’ve released the string on multiple mature bucks and could not find them. It happens to the best hunters in the world too. We as hunters replay the scenario over and over in our heads, wondering what went wrong. The truth is it’s called survival, and these old bucks are just tough. But at the end of the day this is what separates us hunters from killers. That’s why they call this hunting and not killing fellas 😉
I did this last year and couldn’t believe it. It was a chip shot and I hit high and got 0 penetration with a sever. Like you said if you hunt long enough it’s bound to happen. Just have to learn from it and he better next time. Thanks for sharing
Did the same thing on a 5.5 year old big eight last year three days later show up on trail cam like he had never been touched.Going after him again this year.
Have done it twice. Luckily both times I’ve gotten trail cam confirmation they where still alive. And my dad ended up killing one of them after. The neighbor the other. Definitely sucks
Been there-done that. It totally sucks all around. The best you can hope for is that he lives, doesn't develop an infection and die that miserable way, possibly eaten alive by coyotes. I shot a doe a few years back with my open sights Hawken ML, and I thought I put a good shot on her, even watched her slide down a hill to the bottom of a ravine (couldn't see down into the ravine from that angle). Assuming she was just laying down there, I went back to get my truck and bring it near the top of the ravine. Long story short, when I got back she was gone, with very little blood to follow. My daughter and I found her about 2 weeks later with a rotten wound, and half eaten. In other words, she was probably alive when the coyotes got to her.
We all have been there and done this at one time if you have hunted long enough. My greatest fear is that this Buck is probably dead considering the placement of the shot.
