Hey Mike, with everything going on lately with China, Isreal and Russia/Ukraine! I'm out of sorts. Just checked this video! I probably had your cover and center page artwork on my walls along with Jeffries and all the rest! All the different aviation information magazines in print in the 70s along was close to 100 different copywrite names! Just in the military aviation history and current development magazines that have disappeared over our lifetime. I really miss them! I have the last edition periodicals of Air Classics. I sure didn't realize it at the time. But after most periodicals went digital. Everything changed! I still love going to the bookstore or, DRIG STORES for their choices of aviation magazines that they had available in the early-mid 70s. I miss those days! Thanks for bringing back the memories!
WHOA! MATT JEFFERIES??? Talk about name dropping! He is why the access tubes in Star Trek are still called Jefferies tubes! A complete legend in in sci-fi world. I have been admiring Roy Grinnell's work forever but I never had any idea what he looked like until now. Great video Mike!
When I first heard his name, it sounded familiar but didn’t register until Mike said that he’d helped design the USS Enterprise from Star Trek…. So yes, it was THE Matt Jeffries….
This has soared to my number one spot of your awesome videos. I used to pick up AirPower and Wings at the local hobby shop until they went under and then switched to a local Barnes and Noble. I still have them in demco folders on my modeling table for reference work when building. The cover art was amazing. I was really impresed with the Blackbird image superimposed over a high altitude shot showing the earths curvature. I really appreciated the explanation of how the image came to be in the magazines credits. Incredible publications.
Great presentation Mike! Great art and stories of the artists. I knew of Matt Jeffries but you certainly have filled in his background for us. 👍 Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I'll emphasize those greetings from Brazil. And it was hard to find Air Classics, Aviation History, Air & Space magazines. Hard to find and as expensive as possible. I still own several from the early to late 90's. Cheers and keep up the amazing content!
Mike. I love all of your videos. Way back during my misspent youthful years, my hobby was sketching aircarft. I now regret that I did not persue that interst more seriously.
My father bought all those magazines you listed. Between my father and myself we had quite the collection I miss Wings and Airpower! I had to downsize so I donated my collection to the local Air Cadet squadrons library.
Love all the issues of Wings & Airpower I've saved over the years. By far the best covers and editorial aviation content out there, But too bad the paper and publishing quality were so cheap. I will never forget as a child picking up my first copy of Koku-fan, a Japanese aviation magazine in the late 70's. The quality of the printing & the photos etc, just blew my mind. British aviation magazines also have high quality publishing; and if quality publishing is your thing - avoid direct digital print books at all costs!
Who’d a’thunk that aircraft art would or could create such a lengthy and well-regarded YT series? Not me, but I am both surprised and excited to see, hear, and learn whenever a new video drops. My dad was a superb model builder. There was a formation of F-4 Blue Angels suspended in my bedroom as a lad. He also built models of the modified C-141 Jetpak when he worked at Steward-Davis. I appreciate your time and devotion to the art! Thanks.
I wonder if sometime you could do a spot on Ed Valigursky. He did some illustrations for, namely, Popular Mechanics back during the '60s, but haven't been able to find much about him.
Mr Jefferies what beautiful work you did! What an inspiration he left on many artists and dare I say engineers from the drawing boards of Hollywood to the computers of Pasadena. Thanks for this video Mike!
Your aviation art has thrilled me as long as I can remember. I found myself collecting your "Wings" and "Airpower" magazines; I liked the histories in them and the art and photos. I am in my 70's now and have a couple of boxes of them - 50 or so! In this video I heard you say you published 62. I'll take good care of them! Thank you for your hard work and talents!
I LOVE the lack of copy on the older magazine covers from the 60s. Clean, and lets the art shine through. Another wonderful presentation, thoroughly enjoyable AND informative. Thanks as always for the great work!

Wings and Airpower are the only aviation magazines that I have held on to over the years. Loved those magazines, the articles, and photos! Appreciated your effort Mike to try and keep them alive. Also have a number of your aviation litho prints - GREAT STUFF!!!
So many memories of these Amazing magazines available in the display stands at the various hobby shops and book stores... Stunning art work!!! These captured the imagination of those who wonder how it works, and what they do.
My Dad got me started building and flying model airplanes about 1960 ... and buying Model Airplane News. I always looked forward to seeing the latest from Cal Smith on the cover of that magazine. I still collect model airplane plans and 3 view drawings of aircraft and love the work of Paul R. Matt and Bjourn Karlstrom.
Love the video. I am a scale aviation modeler and I can understand the power of good artwork. There have been model kits that I built as a child that I can still remember the artwork on the box! Art sells.
Wonderful to have a new video as part of the 120th anniversary of the first powered flight. Always loved your magazines, and of course you art! Cherie and I were at the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers flight at Kill Devil Hills, NC. An amazing thing to be part of, even though the Wright Flyer re-creation flight that day didn't go as planned because of uncooperative weather.
What a fantastic presentation. I have all the copies of Wings /Airpower that you produced and cherish them all. The articles, photos, and cover illustrations are second to none.
Another amazing episode of your must watch series. I think we need a 1910 to 1950 part 2! The magazine art from 1930 to 1945 was stunning. I can scan and forward some issues if you want to take on that project!
I was an Air Progress subscriber in the late '60s / early '70s. Bought a lot of Air Classics issues too, especially if they were covering a model I had in progress.
Another amazing video Mike! While it's timely to say so I hope you and your family enjoy a wonderful Christmas season and all the very best to you in 2024! I very much look forward to all of your forthcoming content here. - Bob (Toronto)
I learned a bunch as always with your posts. Loved the pic and background of the Revell-a-tions. Great learning some details of Mat Jeffries’ non-Federation life. As always thanks. All the best for you and your family this Holiday Season.
Hi Mike ,another great episode with beautiful artwork and background story of the talented artists and methods! Your articles and artwork in Wings and Airpower really inspired my interests in Mid Century aviation model building, thank you!! Merry Christmas!!
@@celebratingaviationwithmik9782 Thank you Mike, My Heather passed away in July 2021 of Covid and I'm doing OK getting on with my life. All the best to you and your family!
It's great to see some of Mr. Jeffries aviation artwork! His designs for Star Trek are part of what make The Original Series THE best series for me. The original NCC-1701 from the series (from the original Pike era, to the production TV series version) is THE most beautiful science fiction space ship, bar none. FAR better than the movie versions and later series iterations. The TOS Enterprise compared to the movie version is to me like the original 1962 250 GTO Ferrari compared to the (overrated) Ferrari Daytona. I've also always found i interesting that Mr. Jeffries was the art director on such different series as Star Trek and Little House on the Prairie!
You may not be able to judge a book by its cover, but you sure can sell one by its cover. lol. The artwork shown is fantastic. I like to draw as well, but I stick to landscapes and people because I have a difficult time with implementing the perceptive balance of manufactured objects, i.e., an airplane is manufactured to be (more or less) perfectly balanced, but of course when looking at the airplane it will naturally appear (depending on the angle viewed at) that maybe one wing is longer than the other or something like that because of relative perspective and this is how good artwork will relay the image. When I try drawing an airplane, it will most likely end up looking as if a three-year-old had actually assembled the airplane with one wing way longer than the other and not attached at direct opposite points along the fuselage.
I bought Wings and Airpower every month, well alternating mouths. I still have a stack of them. Can I buy old issues anymore? My favorite issue is the one on the history of the atomic bomb, loved the way it started.....While a one megaton bomb might be fine for La Crosse Wisconsin........(where I live).......good information to know. Took that issue to school and showed it to everyone.
A neighbor of mine said she lived with her boyfriend in a hanger at Santa Paula Airport in the 90's and early 2000's. Her boyfriend had a PT23 I believe. They later crashed it in a field of cows. Pride was their only injury. I remember her talking about knowing Walt Jeffries. Her name is Elaine G. Know anybody who fits that description?
Paperwork from back then? I don’t think so. I never received a refund, and I still have my entire collection of Wings/AirPower in magazine binders. They are fantastic!
