Nirupa Rao is a botanical illustrator based in Bangalore, India. Her work is inspired by regular field visits into the wild, and informed by close collaboration with natural scientists to achieve accuracy. A National Geographic Young Explorer, Nirupa received a grant to create her book Hidden Kingdom-Fantastical Plants of the Western Ghats (published in 2019). She has also published Pillars of Life-Magnificent Trees of the Western Ghats (2018), a debut project in collaboration with naturalists Divya Mudappa and TR Shankar Raman of the Nature Conservation Foundation. She illustrated the cover of Amitav Ghosh's latest novel, Gun Island, and re-jacketed four of his older novels for Penguin-Random House.
In 2019, she participated in a Plant Humanities program at Harvard University's Dumbarton Oaks Research Centre, and was due to participate in a show at their museum in 2020, which has been postponed due to COVID-19.
She recently collaborated with the Centre for Wildlife Studies on Wild Shaale ('Wild School' in Kannada), an environmental and conservation-education program designed for rural school-going children, aimed at nurturing interest and empathy toward India’s wildlife and wild places. She has also been named an INK Fellow, one to 'watch out for' in Forbes India's annual 30 Under 30 issue, and one of Harper's Bazaar India's 'Indian Women to be Proud Of This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. A great talk! I am an illustrator and use watercolor a lot, so I know how difficult it is to create botanical illustrations. Her illustrations are wonderful, and this talk made me realize how they are so much more than illustration. Very inspiring.

After watching this, I just want to be badly stuck in a traffic and take the long-neglected opportunity to really see and appreciate the trees and plants I'm passing by. There's a catch though, I cannot travel in this time of community quarantine. 😁 The talk was so genuinely fresh and substantial. ❤

I found Botany really interesting in college, most of it was masked by boring dictations and UNenthusiastic teachers. Although I remember one of my Botany teacher, GT ma'am who atleast tried to instigate some passion for the subject to us students. So I thank Nirupa ma'am for doing the same, can't wait to get your books. :)

What a well-written and well executed talk. I esp love when she talks about trees and describes them so perfectly, which is difficult! As she talks about ttees, she gleams and glows like a child talking about something that makes her so happy; you just want her to be successful in it. I can only recognize palm trees, coconut trees and very fee plants. But she’s right. Trees are not backdrops, they’re fundamental to life and the planet.

Fantastic talk! Honestly, if you start to learn about and recognize plants, it's like you discover a whole new world that was in plain sight but hidden from most. Yes, there are a lot of people (*cough, cough, on Instagram*) getting into very specific houseplants, but nothing beats being able to recognize local plants.

I remember as a child (1960s)my family would drive thru the Blue Ridge Mountain range,my mother would identify all the foliage. This was truly amazing to me. That's when the mountains were mountains not tourtist attractions. It just bothers me that people value money over God's creations.

I love this talk, the only issue I take with it is her statement that "plants are the building block of our ecosystems" this just isn't true, it's actually fungus that makes life on land possible, by all means plants are essential, but they couldn't exist without the groundwork(literally groundwork they can turn rocks into soil) that fungus is responsible for

Nice video. Brilliant water colour paintings. I don't know many trees from other parts of the world. I mostly know the trees we have here in UK. I write poetry of a good variety of subject matter. Here is a poem I have written about trees. Trees Now just look at this, cast your eyes down here, to think I was a very fine tree: took nearly 50 years to grow me, well bar one day. That is the day I want to talk about. You see, I had very long arms, happy clapping hands and was called Calypso Sweet of the Indonesian Rain Forest. Birds would nest in my branches; monkeys would swing, cry and climb away from the slithering hissing snake. I provided for a whole host of creatures, all great and small, and would refresh the air, O yes! I stood very tall. But now, look to the East, and to the West, all around as far as the eye can see, at the desecrated falling trees, falling everywhere, with such an explosive crack, followed by a mighty thunderous crash, few animals remain to be afraid. We are told something about FSC, call it what you will, and are appeased for a while, it takes away the haunts of the Rangers ‘still legally logging’ in this vast country. They are highly paid, to ‘thin’ acres upon acres. Leaving a waste land of hopeless prospects of prosperity with just a few withered anorexic twigs that did not make the grade. Now, count my rings; know that it is so, read my epitaph written in a bar code. Hear them talk and laugh, “This one will certainly make up the load.” “Yes,” continues the other, “paint this one yellow and that one white. They will make the finest furniture to be housed in our earthly paradise.”

I'm an 11th grader and very much interested in biology. But let me tell you, the ncert's chapters on anatomy of plants are DRY. Seriously! Imagine learning about plant structures with only little visuals and more of long paragraphs. The students arent interested, even the teacher for that matter. They would never see how beautiful that information is unless they go beyond ncert.
