Also a fun tip for people to just draw backgrounds in general: Using a game like Sims 4 is a really great way to map out what you want to do :D It's helped me a lot when drawing comics because I can easily see all the different angles of the background. Just thought it might help you guys out :D

'My neighbor Totoro' from Studio Ghibli has quite an iconic scene with a bus stop in the middle of a forest. :P And there's also a famously mysterious abandoned School bus in the middle of the Alaskan Wilderness (made famous by the film 'into the wild') and nobody knows how it got there lol. It's not beyond the realm of possibility for a bus stop to be reclaimed by nature. :)

Shani Hazan it’s really not that true. I still have so much fun doing digital and traditional art that I’ve gotten into animating. It’s like a excuse for me to draw more pictures and color them. These types of comments get on my nerves because it’s not true. Although you relate to it, lots of people don’t. Please watch your words next time. A better way to say it would be “I agree.” Or just anything that says that you agree with this person’s comment. When you are saying “true” it gets me to think that you think everybody has the same opinion or problem. When talking to a person with a problem they have or an opinion, never say “true” or someone can get really pissed off and you can get into arguments that really don’t matter. That is annoying for me too.

For anyone who wants some really good references, Genshin Impact has a load ton of gorgeous landscapes with lots of detail. You can even change the angle of it for perspective. Someone else said Sims 4, which is also good for more modern landscapes. Minecraft is made up of blocks, but it works just as well! I like using these references because you can change the angle to your liking so you can get an awesome perspective, and lots of vibrant colors. A bonus for minecraft is you can build how you want your landscape to look. I definitely reccomend using these if you can't find any real life landscapes that suit your tastes. You can still use real life ones for lighting and how water looks, though. :) Have a great time painting everyone! Wishing you all the best. ❤

What i learned is a lot but one thing is that its okay to use assets to help you build a background as long as you don't take the entire background for yourself and claim that background that you took as your own

I am unable to picture things when I close my eyes :( I can hear music I am composing or taste things I haven’t cooked yet. But my imagination is completely black and void of shape or texture

When you use ccolor dodge you should use them where your lights hit. and where you put your colordodge you should put shadows below it or in the side for contrast

If you don't have pen pressure, try lowering the opacity of the layer or the brush, then use colour dodge and apply it [with one go] only in specific areas

What I really love here is that Ross' thumbnail sketches are just quick, loose sketches, nothing overly detailed like most do and I dunno why, but it helps me understand the approach better. Like I don't have to go into it extremely detailed and even after refining the sketch a bit, it isn’t overly complicated. His process is simple, straightforward and that's all.

I suffer from aphantasia so, as much as I close my eyes, I can't see, hear, smell nor feel anything. But, besides that, all the other tips were super helpful!

Look at landscapes for inspiration if you have trouble visualizing, that’s what I do, just gather a bunch of images and combine them

I actually get lost somehow when I try to imagine something with my eyes closed. I usually just look like through a wall and imagine stuff. It's not like I have a problem to imagine anything. I just have to keep my eyes open. :D It also works like that when I read a book too. I just read and I "see" it at the same time, so later when I think about it it's like remembering scenes from some movie. And when I try to remember where I've seen it I realize I didn't see it I did read it. Does anyone have it the same way? I just don't talk to people about this so I don't know if it's normal or not. :D

amazing! I love this tutorial. Backgrounds have always been something I've really struggled. drawing leaves is so boring agh! with but this tutorial helped me 'imagine' and get excited for creating an atmosphere/world! I can see how the art school was influencial here. A typical artist- more thinking of myself here- usually goes with gut instinct and just draw. The professional who has had training, do thumbnail sketches and lots of concept sketches. The one thing I can't do, but that just means I enjoy watching you and your process. :) That color range process tip is very handy! Thanks.

Ever since I got serious about doing landscapes I did that thing where you close you eyes and envision. I also used to close my ears so I could completely focus. It really helps to devote all of your focus to envisioning the proportion of every line and form.

@@BelgianWaffle6791 Just remember that the image you are sampling from is only providing some patterns so you just have to play around with the lighting or the levels and then throw it on top of the desired area, cut away where it overlaps where you don't want it to with the magic/magnetic wand tool and then lower the opacity on that layer. I recommend playing around with different textures to get the feel for it and an eye for it. Lichen, marble and granite are a few good examples that are really distinct. Oh my goodness. I have been searching high and low for months for a method I actually would feel comfortable with. Everything I've come across just shows people sketching things out and then using their own brushes to create textures and such. My area of expertise is in photo editing and manipulation. I always felt like it was "cheating" or something for me to use real life photos in paintings. I always felt like I needed to make everything from scratch, and it ends up being so frustrating for me. I can't ever get anything to look right. This is the only method I've seen so far that actually makes sense to me and that I know how to do! Thank you so much for making me feel like it's not cheating to use photos (yes, ones that are legal to use) in paintings. After months and months of struggling to get anywhere, maybe I can actually make decent paintings now. Thank you so much!! And yes, I did close my eyes!
