Hi Shay what a great video. I spent 2 weeks in Iloilo and the Esplanade was my favorite place there. I would go to the SM Mall then walk down to the Esplanade and walk there for a while and back to the mall again. It was a very relaxing place to go. It was so nice to see how clean everything was and that there is places for the kids to go and hang out to do their tictok videos and other activities. I really hope you can get some government officials here to do the same thing. I love the boardwalk here and like they have extended it but there are areas that could still be better. I was there today and saw there was not so much trash in the water but still some. I know there are some people that try to keep it clean. I also know a lot of the trash in the water is not all from Dumaguete but drifts with the tide from other places. I have seen some young people there actually looking for the trash cans to get rid of their trash so maybe if more do that others will do it too. Keep smiling and stay safe

Part of many schools and universities' student outreach programs in Iloilo City during the early 2010s was cleaning up the Iloilo Riverside and planting mangrove trees and plants along what is known as Esplanade now. It's fantastic that the city is reaping the rewards now.

Superb story. Very inspiring and compelling. I participate in river cleanups at my home in Indianapolis and beach cleanups at my condo in Myrtle Beach. I rarely go on a walk or hike without taking a plastic bag for trash and debris. Echoing the thesis of your guests... I notice other people doing the same. People I see often on the trails or on the beach... are now also carrying bags and picking things up. Good behavior is more contagious than bad behavior 🙂 I don't have kids....but I have many I do things with. They will remind me "lorand you forgot a cleaning bag" 👍

I'm sure with what you have experienced in Iloilo and the information provided by the mayor there will snow ball back in your home town Valencia/ Dumaguete as well in many other locations throughout the Philippines. I first discovered trash bins and or fines$ littering in Palawan way back in 2003. This is by far my favourite video of yours, I was so impressed with your previous video cleaning up the foreshore at Dumaguete. I believe, knew that this was the inspiration from within you that you may have thought long and hard how to correct the trash/ litter problem/ problema🤔. You never cease to amaze me. Great documentary style video on Iloilo’s transformation. Never heard of the city until I got to the Philippines, it’s not on too many people’s top places to retire. Booked a month airbnb not too far from the Esplanade, looking forward to breathing cleaner air after 2 months in Manila and Cebu:)

I left my City way back on 2003…Then It surprised & amazed Me for the Transformation of the River thru the effort did by the City Government… A big changes where investors are attracted…To put Businesses in Iloilo..

What an amazing undertaking and effort on your part. I grew up in New York City and remember what it was like in the 70's and 80's and the transformation it went through. I have also been to the Philippines on many occasions in the past and have seen first hand the problem that you are describing and trying to resolve (the cleanliness) As I am getting ready to retire again, I have been researching destinations to relocate to. I must say that even though there are many retirees putting out content on RU-vid to persuade people to come to the Philippines, some are not honest and do not show the other side of the Philippines - which is the problem with Pollution, Trash and with the trash comes the problems with Rodents, in fact during one RU-vid video of a walking tour of a Dumaguete Food Market-you notice a Rat running out of the open air market right behind the narrator, not the narrators fault of course but I commend the Content creator for keeping that clip in the video. (It shows her honesty and integrity) But lets be honest, who in their right mind would leave what they have here and would want to shop or live in a place like that. But all hope is not lost, I applaud you on your effort- you have shown what could be accomplished by just taking the small steps first. I also commend the Mayor of Iloilo for his hard stance and dedication to provide those in the community with a Clean, Safe, Family Friendly environment to live, work and play. You inspire me to reconsider my options. Thank you and God Bless you for what you are trying to do. I close with asking for the Content creators in your area as well as all over the PI to be honest and show the Good along with the Bad so that we, who are over on this side of the world can make an informed decision. But this is the other side that also needs to be addressed. I think all countries have their issues, but I can only do something about mine for now, with help from others. 😉

@Filipina Shay Travels 🇵🇭 I have been visiting Iloilo every year since 2010 until 2019, I have witnessed the improvement every year. I used to dream for Iloilo to have a park like the Central Park in New York city for the residents to enjoy and escape once in a while and I am glad that we have the Eaplanades and bike lanes and the city keep on adding for more. All the plazas and public markets are also being renovated and improved. When I am strolling in megaworld, and Esplanade 1, it transport me back to the streets of New York city and central park.

Thanks for featuring Iloilo. There's still a lot of work and areas in Iloilo that need to be improved, especially near the ports. The downtown area can benefit from a more energized urban regeneration program such as a pedestrianized Calle Real (JM Basa) similar to the high streets in Europe (that will surely boost employment and property prices). Sustainable transport solutions such as safer bike lanes and a clean mass transport system (trams seem to be the perfect solution for Iloilo) should get more attention from city planners if Iloilo needs to level up even more.

Iloilo demonstrates that cleanliness is a state of mind and not a financial imperative. I grew up in an Italalian neighborhood on the outskirts of Boston that would not be considered wealthy, but the italians have a sense of pride in their areas and i disticly remember the how clean everything always was. Poverty is no excuse for living in filth.
Start small think large you’re doing a wonderful job Shay and you are an inspiration for others. Also it takes is education start with the young people
