Ilulissat Dogs 

Ilulissat has a population of around 5,000 and almost as many sledge-dogs. Every year there is a great dog race, Avannaata Qimussersua. This race start was on 28 February 2015. The sled dogs are used for hunting and fishing, but also for tourists who want to experience Greenland at its best. This dog sled journey was organised through WorldofGreenland.com The sea has not frozen properly since the 1980s, so this limits dog sled travel in winter. Mature residents of Ilulissat remember the days when you could sled across to Disco Island.
