About five years before the movie, there was an actual food poisoning outbreak onboard a plane from contaminated omelets at breakfast. Nearly 200 people got sick. By luck, the pilots hadn’t eaten the omelets. Because their biological clocks were still on Alaska time, the pilots had ordered steak dinners instead and were able to make an emergency landing. After the incident, recommendations were made that pilots and passengers be served different meals during flights.

Fun fact the lady that was getting slapped made that suggestion the script really called for one of the stewardess to just shake her or couple of stewardess to shaker but she went to the director and said it'd be much funnier if she was being slapped by different people so they rewrote the scene

1:38 that was actually a big problem at airports. Hare Krishna was the most notorious for doing that.

Yes, and if you didn't ignore them, they would keep following you and talking to you, trying to get you to join their cult. People learned quickly it was NOT worth humoring them or taking the flower.

If you're under 50 or 60 this movie has a lot of tropes from way back then that might not make sense or will go over your head, ha, back then people smoked in airports and on planes still and the gay jokes would be very non pc now as well as some of the sexual innuendos like the pilot talking suggestively to the little boy in the cockpit. (And inviting anyone up there sure wouldn't be allowed now since 911, sigh.) The older lady who can speak jive is funny because she played the housewife mom on a very old sitcom called Leave it to Beaver and it was just so crazy to see her be all cool with jive talking ha. Just such an irreverent random crazy movie, and when my sister and I went to see it when it first came out we were crying hysterically with laughter all through it. The whole audience was just roaring, it was such fun. I am an old lady of 60 now and some younger reactors kinda make me sad cause this movie is just confusing and not funny to them. Guess you had to be there back in that time period ha to really get it. The people sitting by the guy telling his sad story all commit suicide because his story is so boring and they kill themse!ves just to get away from having to listen to him, ha. That kind ofdark humor was funny back then! His drinking problem was that he didn't know how to drink out of a cup ha. And when that little sick girl's iv line got pulled out and her mom is doing chest compressions etc we were all just howling with laughter ha, guess humor was a bit meaner back then!!

Yes, the "translator" was Barbara Billingsley, who played June Cleaver, the mother in the early tv series Leave it to Beaver. Hollywood at the time portrayed the ideal American (white) family leaving in suburbia, father works, mother's whole attention is keeping the house clean and having meals on time, the kids get into just a hint of trouble. Leave it to Beaver was at the top of the list that pushed this over-simplified and mostly false narrative as to who "we" were as a nation. People of color almost never appeared in these tv shows, not even in the stereotypical and offensive roles as they did in other shows. (In a Dick Van Dyck tv show at the same time, he is panicking over thinking he brought home the wrong newborn from the hospital, the two last names being similar. The joke at the end was that the other couple show up at the door and they, being black, clearly meant the right babies got to the right homes. All the couple did was ring the doorbell, walk in and say a few lines in greeting. THIS was so controversial at the time, it took a big fight with the network. And it also got the longest audience laugh - and cheering -when it happened.) June Cleaver was held up as the worse example of this by later women trying to break out of these restrictions. Her character was totally unflappable, and to the annoyance of feminists, did all the housework dressed up, always cheerful, wearing an iconic string of pearls. In retrospect, the actress herself probably didn't buy into this simplistic idea, either. The tv show was two decades earlier and she had changed so much, it took me many times seeing this movie to realize who she was. Knowing this now, I don't think the directors could have found a better person to "flip the script."

This film has been rated to have the most laughs per minute. It’s a comedic remake of an original movie from 1957 called ZERO HOUR - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8-v2BHNBVCs.html BTW, the producers bought the rights to ZERO HOUR just to avoid being sued. References: Opening plane in clouds mimicking the movie JAWS. Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home (coffee commercial spoof) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MJ4kCF22O2w-.html same actress in real coffee commercial Boy/Girl Coffee Scene: The Original and the Spoof - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yH6KW6eMWJI.html From Here to Eternity- Beach Scene - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7TlDNMc_hFk.html Also: He walked out from the mirror at Captain Kramer’s house. A lot of people don’t catch that joke. A lot of people miss the jokes throughout the credits and afterwards the man in the cab says he’s going to give him another 20 minutes but that’s it. - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DPeYFD-vVHg.html

I had seen airplane many times before plus I had seen some of the airport disaster movies from the 70s. I had always thought that airplane was based on those 70s disaster movies. I am a fan of old movies from the 40s and 50s and one day I was watching zero hour. At the time I had no idea what that movie was about. As I was watching it, I soon realized that it was the basis of airplane and not the 70s airport movies. It was a pleasant surprise.

The two voices over the intercom at the start were familiar to people going through the LA airport at the time, the real announcers. And they were married to each other.

In the opening scene when people were getting out of their cars to go inside the airport, you said the road was really busy. That made me think that you had never been to an airport before because that wasn’t a road. It was the airport drop off I would like to encourage you to get on a plane and see what’s beyond your location. From Texas to Las Vegas by plane is a short trip. If I can fly from Los Angeles to Miami then from there to Jamaica, we can take a plane to Las Vegas. I believe you would enjoy it.

The part was originally going to be played by Pete Rose but the studio scheduled filming in August so they got Abdul-Jabbar to replace him. They offered him $30,000 to play the part but he wanted $35,000 because that was how much an oriental rug he wanted for his house cost. The producers thought he was just giving them a creative way of getting an extra 5G out of them so they gave him the $35,000. A couple of weeks after filming ended they saw a picture of Kareem in Sports Illustrated next to a brand new oriental rug he had just bought.
