Yeah I figured that out eventually. My disc is too scratched for the Mac to read. I am now researching how to boot the OS from a flash drive. I (completely legally) downloaded the OS.app (torrent) I just don't know how to boot if from a usb. Thanks for your response, and if you know of article that can help me do this, I would be even happier.
Oh man.. hope it's ok.... I just had to replace another hard drive on another iMac that I bought at the same time (2 years) ago.. Exact same problem where the drive just started failing...
I've performed it with two different Seagate 1TB drives. Model ST31000528AS and model ST1000DM003-9YN162. The 2nd one I didn't need to use the HDD fan control. Not sure why though. Did you check to see if yours is part of the replacement program?
I've performed it with two different Seagate 1TB drives. Model ST31000528AS and model ST1000DM003-9YN162.... Use those models as a starting point... you could even go with a solid state drive though...
Excellent tutorial. I am having terrible time disconnecting the vertical sync cable. Is there some trick? Does it disconnect horizontally vs vertically from mb? thanks
Thanks for your description and update. I too had to replace my HD last year after only having it for almost 2 years. A bad batch of hard drives? Last year they were doing a world wide HD replacement of HD's from a previous batch which mine did not wall under. I think Apple likes to buy low quality parts as to make a larger premium. I have been living with the fans high speed blowing for the last year. I have yet to deal with Apple on this, Hope you get your money.
Renato Alfer that was the data cable, and yes, it had to be reattached.... However, I've done this process again, and managed to do it much quicker without the need to take out any cables other than the vertical sync cable... You just need a little help, or something to help prop up the display while you take out the hard drive...
Tim Urpman You push it toward the top of the screen if you're working on it as in the video... so kind of slides along the board, toward the top... then I think the clip flips over, again toward the back. That's from memory anyway...
It's pretty hard to break this cable. You simply lay it flat against the board and push it back (toward the top of the Mac) until it slides into the connector. Then there's a small metal part (I think with a plastic flap attached) that flips over the connection that is used to secure it in place....
One more question. The display cable is driving me crazy. does not want to go in there. Working on it from the same angle that you are... Is it supposed to be inserted from the front or from the rear? There's not much room to work it.
You can use whatever manufacturer you want... and yes, you'll need an OS disk to load the operating system onto the new drive... unless you have a Time Machine backup, then I think you can do it without a disk... maybe...
The one that came off for me unexpectedly... yeah it was a bit of a pain.... You push it toward the top of the screen if your working on it as in the video... so kind of slides along the board, toward the top... then I think the clip flips over, again toward the back. That's from memory anyway... I don't think it was a push down type...
What model HD did you buy. I have bought two different ones WD and Seagate and none have a compatible pins for the thermal cable. It should be 4 pins to work but the HDs I bought have 8 pins. Thanks.
probably the choice in drives. I got a budget one because it was only sata 2. no OS installs through media or online. but I was able to create an image and restore.
It's easy to make a boot USB from the .dmg file. Just use Disk utility. Go to the Restore tab, put the .dmg (might have to be mounted) as the source and a (mac os x journaled format) USB as the Destination... Plenty of articles if you just google create USB OS X
As you mentioned since the 3rd party replacement does not have apples' firmware and it is going to make the fan run constantly, does it really matter if this cable is attached or not? Thanks,
Great video. I really want to get this done on mine but i am not fully confident in my abilities. I'm not bad at software repairs and I have done a couple software repairs. However I have not attempted a hardware installation repair before and I would like to know if it is a good idea to do this myself. I have done a lot of research and know everything I need.
It will connect as long as it has a heat sensor connection - which both mine did... It's just the firmware.... What I didn't understand is why I needed HDD Fan Control for one and not the other
You're going to need an OS install disk of some kind... any (most) Install disks will work... You might be able to find online and burn a disk, or even make a USB disk image.... not sure where though... I used the original Install disk to start the install, then get into disk utility... Or if you have a Time Machine backup, you might be able to start from there....
Yes, the APlle Pre Installed drives had the Apple firmware.. so any non Apple installed drives would not have the issue... Having said that, I didn't have the fan speed issue on one of the iMacs..
As far as I'm aware, there's no restrictions.. no.. I've done two now and used the same 1tb drive for each, just because I don't need a great deal of storage... The only issue you may run into is the fans blowing a gale.. that only happened to me on my 1st drive when HDD fan control fixed it... I didn't need the software for the second iMac.. even though I used the same brand drive...
Awesome music!!!!!, now busy with repairing a defective vertical sync cable wich hasn't been placed back gently by a friend of ours when replacing his harddrive L.O.L. Now have to find out how to glue 4 flimsy tiny copper printcirquits that have come lose from the connector sticking in this TINY female sync connector on the mobo.... Can you tell me the title and artist of this music?? Would be very happy to know! Regards Offgridd
I'm trying to fix my father in-law's iMac. It was already disassembled. I put in a new hard drive but when i started it up i got the flashing folder. I put the old one in and still got the flashing folder. I took it out and started it without a hard drive and still got the flashing folder. Is it a connection issue with the hard drive? I'd really like to fix this.
okay thank you the computer is back up again good and running but i have one big problem now the fans are ramping out sometimes and my bluetooth icon or bluetooth are not working what soever ...
Hi, i'm about to do the same for mine, just wondering about the type of drive I should buy to replace this. Is there any restrictions? I was thinking of getting a Seagate 2 TB to replace it instead, wouldn't cause any problems would it?
Love the funny comments. Have a question re: Fan Noise. You installed HDD Fan Control now costing $35. Other World Computing sells an adapter cable connecting to the SATA cable, and an adhesive backing next to the spindle of the Hard Drive. This cable passes the AHT. My new drive has the S.M.A.R.T. technology. Did you have to disconnect the thermal cable in order for the software to work? I am debating spending $10 for a 2008 old style sensor cable plus $40-$65 for the tech to install vs this software. Already damaged one cable so I am freaking out at the best option because I DO NOT want to open this pandora's box again. Any other comments helpful
No I didn't have to disconnect it to work... It's the lack of Apple's proprietary firmware that causes the issue... I'm not sure the sensor cable will help in the new drive, since it doesn't have the firmware... I'd get HDD... the free trial sold me... silence the 2nd I installed it..
hamstergraphics good point about the old sensor cable. Maybe they would have worked in an older hard drive. I'm waiting for the company to respond to my email hoping they will be able to walk me through settings for the hard drive that I have. Typically I prefer hardware over software but in this case maybe software is the way to go. what rpms do you have yours set at
Just take your time with it.... Not much that can go wrong... just take it easy on the cables... I managed to swap another one recently without having to lift the screen up as much... I think that saved me from taking off the odd cable...
If it's failed, then yes, likely. If it's failing you may still be able to save files onto another drive. If you still have access to your files, copy them to an external drive ASAP @@americandude3825
@@hamstergraphics my 2010 mac desk top is showing the flashing folder with question mark. When I go to the reboot screen it is saying it cannot reload the current Operating system.
You don't need an identical drive as a replacement... any (or most) 3.5" drives will do... Some don't have the port to plug the heat sensor back in, but without the Apple firmware installed in it, that's prob not an issue...
Ha, thanks... In the end, nothing. Apple did a replacement program for free for the faulty drives... But they didn't announce until after I had done this. Still, I like to take things apart.
Around 4:30 I feel like I heard the transmission completed torrent download sound ;} unless you use the glass sound for other things on your macbook. lol
When you 1st put in a new hard drive, you will get a flashing folder.... It hasn't been formatted and there's no operating system on it.... You'll need to put in the original operating system dvd and restart.... the mac should then boot to the disk and prompt you to format/install the OS
I have had problems with CCC , dodgy boot sector creation, seems you did too. I am considering upgrading to a Hitachi 0F14683 Ultrastar 7K4000 4000 GB Internal, this is RAID grade , do you have any experience?
What about the imac late 2010 (novemeber) its a western digital blue caviar i tried everywhere to find it! I cant find the right hard drive disk! Please help me i really need this for my school i need to fix my imac
hamstergraphics I see some for $14.95 on ifixit.com, but if i can get some good ones from Lowes, then I will go up there today instead of waiting for them to be shipped. Thank you.
Question. So will it work even that temperature sensor cable is not connected to the HD? I’m using an old SATA HD with 8 pins on the back. The 4 socket won’t fit on the pins. So should I just leave it? Thanks.
Yes, it should work just fine, you'll just probably get high speed fans right off the bat... You'll probably need software for that... HDD software should work, or similar.
I'm betting I will as with late 09 iMacs if you don't use the OEM drive, it won't connect the internal drive temp sensor, so the fan ramps up. Looking into software solutions now. Ordered an OWC 480g 8G drive to replace it so hopefully one of the software tools will work their magic and read the s.m.a.r.t. data on replacement ssd accordingly, assuming dangerously the drive provides that. A bit behind on new hardware. :)
So I am also going to have to replace my hard drive as it freezes right after boot up... To top it off the LCD screen is cracked. While i am replacing the hard drive would i be able to also replace the LCD screen with a new one, or is that something to take to Apple you think?
Good video. I hope you upgraded to an SSD by now. HDD's are old and obsolete. I recently upgraded my Mid 2011 iMac to a second SSD and use it as my boot up drive. I use the old HDD as storage. Eventually, I will switch the old HDD I use for storage for another SSD.Then i will set up a RAID 0 configuration in my iMac. Read/Write speeds will be 900/1000 respectively. Anyone with an iMac should do the same. It is completely worth it. Also, upgrade your RAM to 32GB -- it's worth every penny.
ok so I did everything you did... and am trying to boot it from a USB with maverick in it now... nothing works and I keep seeing a flashing folder with a question mark on it. Could I have possibly damaged something in the process?? Please help!
Do you know the Link? to actually buy them?! well the thing is that i have the smcfancontrol but i installed it and everything but it doesnt seem to work... they still go crazy haha please it would amazingly great if you could help me out with this and plus i think my bluetooth went berserk now it doesnt show up on the settings so weird aaaaaah i believe i have to open it again or something ... pleae send me the link... please :( THANK U FOR UR VID ITS AMAZINGLY HELPFUL :D
No, I don't believe that makes a difference... as long as you install HDD Fan Control, you should be good.... Though the 2nd Mac i did didn't even need that....
So if you put in a differentbrand of HD, andthe temp sensor pin layout is not the same, (my new WD drive has pins that are farther apart) do you just not hook up the temp sensor?
Good question. Not sure. Mine had the same pins, just didn't have the built in driver, so had to use HDD Fan control... Not sure how HDD Fan Control would work if there was no connection... Let us know how it goes...
I have the same iMac mid 2010, and the SO it started to be very very slow, days later just don't boot, a folder with a "?" appears on screen, and now not even that folder with the "?", just a white screen when I power on. I can't entry on a recovery or anything could be the hard drive? in windows machines when a hard drive dies the entire system goes down just like here but in mac is same? I don't want to buy a new hard drive and that is not be the problem sorry my poor english, I'm from south america and I would appreciate the answers
Has all the symptoms of a dead hard drive. If you can, I would upgrade to a SSD drive. You will need the original OS installation disk, or a .dmg copy....
so my Imac just shit on me i have a EMC:2428 i heard i have to put the same hard drive back in? as in the same company? or i can use watever i want? and do i need a OS disk once my new hard drive is installed?
Thanks for great video. I have a same iMac, the hdd has been failure and i replaced it with a new one. I follow Apple instructions to create an USB installer and install fresh macOS on the new hdd, but the system won't boot up after the installation, question mark symbol appears. Do you have any idea to fix?
Did you press Option at start up? Are you sure the USB is bootable? Do you have another Mac to test that? How about original system discs, or a Time Machine backup? Have you formatted the new drive?
hamstergraphics the USB is bootable and i was able to install OS on the new hdd, but after the installation, it won't boot up. If i remove the USB, and press the option key at startup, it loads internet recovery (Globe screen with wifi selection). If i don't press the option key at startup, it shows question mark screen. I used First Aid tool from Disk utility to repair permission but it doesn't help? How did you repair disk permissions, use First Aid tool or Terminal command?
I believe I used the first aid tool. Have you tried going through with the Internet Recovery? Reinstalling OS from there? It doesn't sound like the Mac is recognizing the drive with an OS on it.
hamstergraphics I have tried Internet Recovery installation, but unfortunately, it says cannot connect to recovery server. System is recognizing the new disk, but it's not listed in the startup disk list. I tried to install Windows 10 on the new disk (on the iMac), it boots up correctly. I doubt that macOS boot sector has not installed correctly when i am using the USB installation :(
Aaaagghhhhhh... you skipped the part I desperately need 😂 I REALLY need to see how the temperature sensor plug was on the 8 pin socket. I took mine apart without realizing it could go on more than one way and now I can't find anything anywhere about how it is supposed to be on 😭
But you'll note that I added you don't need the temp sensor, it's a proprietary drive (software) so doesn't work. You need to get HDD Fan control app to stop fans blowing. At least this was the case years ago
Just go slow my friend. Hardest part is disconnecting all the cables before lifting the display off... Don't forget, you'l need to get the HDD Fancontrol app also... Unless you don't mind your iMac sounding like a 747 constantly...
Supermoney97 Oh, you're taking the whole screen out, not just the glass on top? If so, those screws are a pain... just because of the magnets next to them... needle nose pliers to hold the screws helped.
Thank you again for replying. You have way better customer service skills then this HDD fan control software company does lol. I have been waiting for them to reply and they have not. How long did it take you to figure out the software since they only give you an hour free trial? WTF, what if it takes me an hour to figure out how to set it up LOL?
I really didn't have to 'figure' anything out.. I just installed it and it did it's thing immediately... I could then go and tweak the settings, but I recall the fan just stopped it's high speed straight away...
You wouldnt have to be disconnecting all the little screen cables if there was someone holding it in a slightly lifted position while you change the HD :)
Thanks. Nikoloz. You are correct... I just updated to an SSD after another failure... and all I needed to disconnect was the vertical sync cable and data cable (a little more care, and the data cable probably would have stayed in....)...... SSD upgrade success!
Apple has just issues an updated Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program for iMacs sold between October 2009 and July 2011 Check the description for the link. Thumbs Up to keep this comment at the top!
Read the full description my friend... This happened before the replacement program... I still managed to get a refund from Apple for the drive.... but thanks for watching...
Wish my dad would allow me 6 hours alone with his 2010 iMac and give him a new HDD, put new thermal paste on (cause it probably could do with some new lease of life), and clean out the dust
Thank you i will check it out since the imac does that weird noise haaaa freaking fans but hey thank you so much for everythin! i think i need to open it again and put the bluetooth antenna back on its place dammit! freaking hardware but oh well THANK YOU SO MUCH GOD BLESS!
tahnks for the info. and just so ya know, i don't actually fuck air fresheners. I just thought of it when i opened up the freshener. I made that video for a tosh.0 viewer video but didn't upload it cause it sucks. I'm gonna take the vid off youtube, I get far too much shit for it.
