matthaus woolard The SSD isn't SATA, it is PCIe and has a speed of three GIGABYTES per second, not GIGABITS. Moreover, there will likely be two SSDs, so the speed will be about 6 GB/s.

nice machine but for many pro users ECC memory is a must, sure if you dont need ECC then dont get it however that does not make the machine over priced.

matthaus woolard not at all. ECC memory only corrects technical data issues during usage. Which means that most proffessional uses are fine with regular memory aswell. Do keep in mind that this also includes windows 10, a much more open OS, AND is fully upgradeable, so you can keep this machine viable for a lot longer than the Mac. Sorry for my cussing above i was in a lousy mood.

And also, id like to state that while the Mac isnt as overpriced as other systems by apple you can build much better for the same price.

@Polite Pupper As someone who works in the scientific computing space. I will explain to you a few things: if a soft-error happens and is not detected you system most likely will not crash if you are running a ram intensive task since the flipped bit will be part of some large matrix, if this flip happens are the beginning of your simulation then the error can magnify as your simulation runs you will not even know it has happened. Therefore if you are using a system that does not have ECC memory (and thus the change of these undetectable soft errors is much higher) you will need to run your simulation more times to have a good degree of certainty upon it than if you are on an ECC system. Give this paper a read if you're interested: ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/1438282/ With respect to MacOS VS Windows etc remember for the types of tasks this machine would be used for you would want a *nix based kernel anyway, its not a gaming machine, more of a rendering/simulation machine so macOS and Linux would be your os choice, not windows (that doesn't even scale well for 5k). Upgradability is a very important point, for independent users, this is a critical issue I agree. But for many companies good luck getting the IT department to take on upgrades and to bother dealing with 20 different hardware vendors for warranty and repair when they could just deal with one. As a consultant, this machine would not be for me.

Obviously. 4999$ is the starting price for the imac and it only has a misley 8-core Xeon. Now imagine the price of the 18-core Xeon, you can clearly see that the image is deceptive. With 7000$ you can easily build a pc that will have way more cores (i am only comparing core count, since they haven't released any other information for the base model)
