iMac won't power on FIXED 

Dude this video has saved this old iMac (2011) so many times. Once again I thought it was headed to the recycle heap. But alas I followed your instructions again and lo and behold it’s reserected yet again. I only use to watch movies or listen to RU-vid vids while I am in the workshop. I also have all my music stored here, backed up of course, but don’t want to let go. 😅 thanks so much for sharing this.

I used this technique to remotely help 90 year old parents in FL to resurrect their iMac which would not power up. Much thanks, must be some sort of capacitor in iMacs which causes this problem. The solution rocks!😀

I was given an imac and it would not power on so I held the power button for about a minute and still would not power on. A week later I saw your video and touched the power button and it turned on, so your method does work. Thank you.

Thanks so much as this worked for me when I'd just about given up after trying the disconnect plug for 15 secs option and everything else. Thanks to you I disconnected power plug for just over a minute and held down power button for same time. Then I connected power plug and pressed power button and all now working OK.

So weird that this trick works. I’m glad so many people are having the same results! I haven’t shut that computer down in months now. Just sleep mode and restart it every now and then. Seems to work fine.

THANK YOU for this VIDEO. I HAD TRIED SEVERAL TIMES to RE-START my iMAC 2008....... AND I HAD GIVEN-UP. It has set on the CORNER of a DESK in my OFFICE since mid-AUGUST 2020 - about 18-months. I DID NOT BELIEVE something that SIMPLE would bring it back. I am SPECIFICALLY referring to holding in or down the "ON" BUTTON for a MINUTE (I WENT FOR a MINUTE and 15-SECONDS). THAT is all it took to make it work. And just as you said in the VIDEO - it did NOT COME on with the FIRST PUSH-OF-THE-BUTTON. It was my SECOND try. But BEFORE I heard the START-UP SOUND I SAW DUST from the FANS turning indies the unit - then the START-UP CORD. THANK YOU . ALSO know - I set-up a TURN-ON (and SHUT-DOWN) schedule in PREFERENCE. I DO NOT WATNTO TEST MY "LUCK". AGAIN THANK YOU - I REALLY NEEDed that COMPUTER as a BACK-UP for my BUSINESS. Rick

YES, this worked! I brought a friend's 2011 iMac back from "the dark" by following the instructions: disconnecting the power cord from the unit for a few minutes, holding down the power button for about 2 minutes, reconnecting the power cord, then pressing the power button. She'd tried all of the Apple site suggestions without luck. Don't know/don't care why this worked but it did. Thanks for posting the video.

Power outage messed mine up. I leave it on sleep mode always and it’s plugged into a surge protector but I guess it was enough to fry it. I currently have the power cord unplugged overnight and held the power button for 5 min for good measure lol. So in the morning I’ll plug it back in and see if it turns on. Next day update: I woke up at 6:30 am ran over and plugged in the power cable. Before even pressing the power button the Mac just turned on but hesitated a bit. Long story short it worked...just let it rest for at least 12 hours. And from now on I am never leaving it on sleep/standby mode during a storm. Shut down your computers always. And back them up!

Darn, found this video. My 2011 iMac went dark while I was doing something else, I thought it was in sleep mode, but nope. Second monitor set up gave the 'no input' message - never a good sign. I've been through all the Apple restore options. No sounds, no lights, nada. Tried swapping out the power cord from my husband's 2014 iMac. Nothing. Tried holding down the start button for 2 minutes, then plugging back in, as you suggested. No luck. Now going to give a go at plugging a thunderbolt to USB-C from dead iMac into new MacBook pro in the hopes that I can get all the screen grabs I need for storyboarding for a contract job I'm on. Only reason why I haven't moved to using the laptop for work is that I need two full-size monitors to do my work, and the macbook only allows one display on the new M1 chip machines...

It worked out, i was afraid to need technical service from. apple which is suspiciously always so expensive. besides you video notes I also made an scheduled turn on and off on the energy savings menu, just in case. every day it will turn on at 7 am an will go to sleep at 0 hrs. thank you very much!!!!

Thank you! I held the power button for a minute and one half while the power cord was disconnected. When I plugged the cord back in, the power button did not respond once again to the single quick press. But I held the power down this time and after the ten seconds it booted up fine. I had tried the unplug for ten seconds, but that had not worked. Holding the power down for over a minute while the power cord is unplugged seems to have been the trick.

Thanks, This method actually worked. My situation was the iMac wouldn't turn on after the power was interrupted from a storm. Strange this is, even though it wasn't hooked up to a surge protector, it nevertheless, was powered off during the storm. In any event, thanks for posting - great fix!

in this slow time of life, I decided to try to power up an old iMac so one of my kids can use...but I always had this powering issue the last couple of months that I would use this... I got a new iMac 2 years ago...and haven't used this one (2010) since then... No luck using your method. Trying again now...but didn't know if you had any other suggestions...

I have a late 2009 imac that I hadn't used for 8 years. Someone wants to buy it but wants High Sierra to run on it. I started it up and El Capitan was running on it. I then confirmed that LATE 2009 imacs can indeed run High Sierra. So I started downloading High Sierra from the app store and during the installation process the screen just went black. Now it no longer turns on so it's "dead" after MANY attempts to force restart etc. It looks like it's probably the screen that's black (and not the imac not turning on at all) because when I attach an external disk to the imac, and try to start up the mac, the little led light on the external disk lights up, so it seems like something is being powered-up (although nothing shows on the Imac's screen).. Anyone know of a fix??

Thought i had found solution to mine with this trick but nothing has worked for me so far. Mid 2011 27 inch imac, when i hit the power button you can hear the fans turn on, disk drive working and the HDD kicking on but nothing on the screen and no startup chime either. Any other ideas?

So I tried this and it worked, the computer is making a noise like it’s on but I still see a black screen. Anyone know why? Or is my computer just shitting the bed

This saddens me. This was another supposed fix for an iMac that just won't start but otherwise works fine, that just didn't work for me.
