Some facts. 1. The teacher who rejected langlang in Beijing actually did it because they didn’t privately give her money (red envelope) for bribe, they wanted to get in the Chinese conservatory where it was great competition and recommendation is important, and it was a tradition to bribe yet they didn’t know that’s why the teacher hated him. 2. Lang lang is very grateful for “Uncle NO.2”, the guy who got him back to piano and mend the relationship between he and his father, after lang lang got his fame and fortune the first thing he did was bought a house for his mother in Shenyang, the second thing was he bought a house for “Uncle NO.2” in Beijing. they are close friends till this day. 3. Professor Zhu (the old lady who taught him as a kid) was hired by lang lang for supervisor position in lang lang music school in Shenzhen and he respects her greatly till this day. she was raised in a highly civilized environment by nuns from europe thats why her english was good but she was forced to work in the farm for 8 years during cultural revolution where she didn't touch the piano even once, and she was once publicly scolded for mentioning the name "Bach".

Lang Lang's story is one of the most touching stories I have read. His story inspires me because he respects his father despite of the fact that he was very strict and he turned this into a beautiful story. He still loved and respected his Dad and his enormous love for his Mom is very inspiring! He is a genius and I think God has gifted him with a wonderful talent to touch many lives like mine. More power to you, Lang Lang, and may God bless you always! Thank you for sharing your talent to the world!!!

The way Lang Lang's dad helped him to succeed was extremely harsh, but thanks to the natural talent Lang Lang has and his own will of practicing hard every day, they together achieved their great target. However, there are also some other musician kids parents have successfully helped their kids to become great musician with softer ways. Harsher or softer, one thing is for sure: without a certain amount of natural talent and excessive amount of daily hard work year after year, no matter how hard the parents push the kids, they won't become the good ones.

+TIAN PENG Our minds are not so simple as you say, some can learn at a monster like rate without the talent that is generally spoken for birthright.
@tianpeng3162
@tianpeng3162 8 лет назад
None of my words above says only genius have complicated brain and others have simple brains. I'm an undergraduate biology student in my senior year, so it'll be very silly to say things like that as if I never studied a thing about human brains. In the cases you refer to, motivation compensate for the lack of talent, which actually does often happen.
@tianpeng3162
@tianpeng3162 8 лет назад
Eradorae Blaze In addition, for many people there motivation does more or less compensates for the lack part of talent, but there are a few portion of people there (besides intelligent disabled) simply can't achieve great successes (possibly some higher than average successes) because the great motivation can't compensate for their extremely below average natural understanding and ability for the skill they are trying to improving on. Back to the main theme in Lang Lang's case, even when a large population of children all work equally hard on similar educational background, the ones with greater talent will achieve more outstanding successes at last.
@Marzaries
@Marzaries 8 лет назад
TIAN PENG Talent is simply a multiplier at which the rate of learning is from a child to an adolescence, after adult hood one can learn through simply emotion, or by pure will and shall succeed.
@tianpeng3162
@tianpeng3162 8 лет назад
That's called hardworking phenomenon, sure without any unusual talent one can still possibly progress fast with extreme hard work. Still, at the boarder of high level and remarkable musician, the hardworking talented ones will keep go up and become the phenomenon while the one without real talent but only hard work will not go any further.

Well made! Lang Lang's talent, life story and success is one-of-a-kind in the whole world. There is only one Lang Lang and will be only one Lang Lang. His talents (musicality and coordination), remarkable memory, strong determination and diligence, people and fun personality, genuineness, and how all those qualities helped him to survive his pushing father's "abuses" and the almost fatal destructive teacher's verbal abuses are all invaluable to his extraordinary success. Luck? Yes, but luck can only be grabbed by those who are ready. Now he is not only one of the world's top pianists, he is giving back to the community. Lang Lang, thumbs up for the good work you are doing! God bless!

Now I understand more that how great pain could give birth to great art. I have been treated in the similar but much lighter when I studied piano. I've said it many times but it bears repeating, " music doesn't come from you, it flows through you", it flows from a place that has no name. When you tap into that place most of the time you will not remember how you did but you will never make a mistake. What's also interesting is before I could be admitted to my teacher's school, I also had to play an exam I was the youngest student ever admitted at that time, I think I was nine years old.

I just wonder if he would have achieved the level of success without the dad - yes - the dad was psycho - but how many kids at a young age with or without 'talent' would practice hours a day. It's easy to say the dad is the bad guy, but he gave up his job to make sure Lang Lang succeded, he took on debt to ensure Lang Lang could travel to competitions, and he sat in every piano lesson, he also made sure he practiced. Most parents, would not have that level of dedication, and probably would be happy their kid practiced 2 hours a week. Also they were poor, so this context may have played a part in how driven the family was to help Lang Lang succeed.

Asian parents are very much willing to go an extra mile or even way further to nurture their children’s education or talent. It’s just that they aren’t sure on the proper way to allow their children to understand their perspectives... so most parents would take on the role of being an autocratic disciplinarian... which backfires real badly sometimes. And these kids would grow up understanding what they’re parents went through but it’s too late...

Well said, his dad was not just a strict parent, he did not just talk the talk, but als put tremendous effort in it. He not only wants his son to achieve what he could never had, but he must have saw talent in Lang Lang at an early age, and what Lang Lang has achieved is not only through practise, it is god given talent, his father must have seen that from the beginning and was willing to risk and dedicate his life to it.

Lang Lang is an extraordinary genius. The richness and depth of the Chinese culture played a role in his superb understanding of the subtlties of the western music. His father may be harsh, but without pushing him to the limit, will God have stepped out to help him ? Who says his father has abused him? His father insisted that all his energy and time should be channeled in one direction, instead of being dispersed in every direction. Most people's lives are conventional and tedious anyway despite loving parents. Lang Lang's childhood is as good as another. The fact that Lang Lang did what his father said for long meant that he experienced some joy while doing it, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to pull it off.

LL nearly gave up playing piano because of 1 teacher & harsh critic of his playing in Beijing. In the book "Battle Hymns of the Tiger Mother", the Chinese-American author Amy Chua pushed her older daughter Sophie to play piano to the point where the family would only have dinner after she played a piece perfectly. Ms. Chua promotes the idea that playing music at a high level can be "nurtured" and Sophie's Carnegie Hall performance is the proof. Many people took piano lessons before and learned to play a few Classical pieces. You don't get noticed unless you are at LL's level of technical virtuosity. A few years ago, a friend brought her 2 boys over. The older boy played "Minuet in G" from Bach's Notebook for Anna Magdalena while his younger brother accompanied him on the violin. Being able to play this piece is like the minimum requirement to get into the world of Classical music. After hearing LL's performances, it's clear that the 2 boys who reluctantly performed for us because their parents insisted had a long way to go. At the age of around 9, they wouldn't have brought the same level of energy and excitement as LL would to thousands of people at the same age.

@Lael Israel Kids don't know what they want to do with their free time before age 10. It's common for parents to get kids enroll in a music program / with a private teacher. My parents are no exception. My parents come from a non-musical family. At least they don't push us to practice music. If the kids don't show any talent (get anywhere in a year), mom would stop the music lessons. We got pushed to study hard instead.

I am glad I learned this about Lang Lang...now he went from someone I didn't really want to know to someone very interesting and attractive in terms of the work he does..

A Phoenix rose from the depths of misery ..at this young age being told to kill himself by either over dose or jump off the building by his own father was probably a catalyst in his life ..my mother did a similar action to me but she said she would poison me and did in fact end up abandoning me to the state of Illinois...but unlike Lang Lang there was no art or skill I had been practicing and suffering from ...I will never understand the older generation of some people .

After all is said and done one thing stands. With the notoriety that advertising (including this video) gained him, he does attract a young audience to classical music. If those fans one day realise that there are much better pianists around the world (perhaps technically less perfect but without his bad taste in interpretation, showiness and pompousness), so much the better for them. And if they don't realise that, so much the worse and nobody is hurt in the process.

The Asian father in him is on full display. And he had toned it down already.

An interesting and compelling story and I can tell you a few things about my own struggles but it would make what happened to Lang Lang as inconsequential, however needless to say I did not have a father in my life after the age of 11 and my mother was strapped with responsibility but we all did receive lessons in music and the piano was my choice. Imagine going to the war in Vietnam and coming home and starting late in a music school in New York City and trying to make you way in the world of music where there are millions of pianists who are out there doing the same thing but did not quite make it or become recognized for various reasons. Luck is a factor, money and politics another and then of course doting parents who border on begin fanatics themselves and over the top. Is that what it takes to drive a person as they did here and risk the very life they meddled with and for what reason may one ask? For fame and popularity and to sell DVD,s whatever the reason was it worth it? As pointed out some people would not survive the punishment he received if you want to call it that. I mean, what it is the lunacy behind his father's drive to make his son into a pianist and to imagine that he told him to jump off a bridge, or take thought of committing suicide and all for what? I know for one that the life of a pianist is one of dedication, hard work, discipline and then there is the inherent risk of cracking up under the pressure.

I am sorry your passion for music did not better translate into public success! You have kept your self straight and you share nicely! Are there any young in your life for you to share with? I do hope so!

Ha Ha Ha! We needed a gag here! George Burns claimed in a routine about his early jobs he once worked in a hotel elevator and one day his guest asked to go to the 9th floor! But there were only 8 floors in the hotel! "The next day, looking for another job....! What do you suppose had happened? You can see the elevator bursting through the ceiling? No, it’s wonderfully silly! But I like your 40 hours a day!

It seems he already was born with an affinity for the piano and perhaps the environment and culture in China helped this along..Say what you want about his upbringing...but I would have loved to be brought up with this militant style of parenting if that is what it was and I may also have this wonderful piano skill.probably not near his level but at least enjoyable.
