When he said "i want to stop" I think the response was time. I think the whole song is about time and growing old. Building your wisdom and sharing it through pain, and they younger guy says to his older version "I want to stop" and the older version goes "we can't" and knocks him down. I think this song is about age and time.

I love the depth of Imagine Dragons lyrics. This song is definitely about allowing pain to become your motivation to succeed. In the end, you're grateful for the pain because it forced you out of an inferior situation. "Second thing second, Don't you tell me what you think that I could be, I'm the one at the sail, I'm the master of my sea, oh-ooh, The master of my sea, oh-ooh" speaks of taking control of your own life. Taking all your power back and away from reacting to outside circumstances.
