Hi, I’m Ian and I live in Surrey in the UK.
In this video I explain how to use the video mode in the ASIair Pro to capture planets or the Moon for example. In this case I took some images of the Moon.
It very easy to do and I think it produced a fairly good image, even though I wasn’t using a dedicated planetary camera.
I also show how to stack the images within the ASIair Pro.
The final image is a mosaic of two 1 minute stacked images taken on the 14th January 2022 from my back garden.
Main Equipment:
• Sky-Watcher Esprit 120ED (Super APO Triplet)
• Sky-Watcher Esprit 120ED Field Flattener
All above acquired from FLO
• Sky-watcher EQ6-R-PRO equatorial mount
• ZWO ASI 294MC-Pro single shot colour camera
• ZWO 60mm Finder/Guidescope
• ZWO ASI 120MM Mini
• Baader 610mm Longpass Red Colour Filter
• ASIAir Pro
• ZWO IR/Cut Filter
• Image Composite Editor
• Photoshop

4:38 I recently learned that you don't have to go back to Home before using Go To. You can Go To directly from the sideways angle in the second part of Polar Align.

great video; well explained. Having just started in this hobby, what I find lacking is real step-by-step videos for total beginners of the ASIair explaining how to get from switching on the unit thru to PA, guiding, etc etc There are plenty that quickly move thru the features but its super frustrating that key steps showing EXACTLY how to jump from one function to another are missed out....I think your presentation style would suit to make these videos - maybe something you could consider :) cheers from Down Under

Many thanks for watching. A good idea, I will do another tutorial on my ASI full work flow. I did one about 16 months ago, part 1 of my series on capturing the Rosette Nebula, however, with some of the new ASIair features would be helpful to do a new one, clear skies Ian

Quite a good result although I think stacking stills is the way to go for sharper results, particularly given that modern mirrorless cameras can take stills exceptionally fast. Take care.

Very nice. I may have to get an ASIAIR. I do planetary and lunar imaging with a dedicated planetary camera. I stack with AutoStakkert and sharpen with PIPP. Your approach is more modern, just as good and quicker

Craig, Thanks for watching. I’m still a big fan of PIPP and AutoStakkert. I will do more Lunar and planetary this summer to see how consistent the ASIair is for this. It’s certainly a great system if you don’t want to stay up all night monitoring deep sky object imaging, clear skies Ian

Good day Mr. Ian: I have a question that probably/assuredly has been asked a billion times: regardless, I am going to ask you. Mr. Ian, your Skywatcher refractor is an expensive telescope: My guess is that you could have acquired (perhaps) a 10" or 12" SCT for approximately the same funds. My question: do you feel that your refractor is a better all-around choice for use in your area, and/or do you feel that with the advances in CCD cameras, it's simply unnecessary to have 'large, unwieldy SCTs. Thanks for the great video: LOTS and lots of great information - which is extremely valuable. Thanks once again. Clear skies.

I finally got to try your technique on a full moon last night. Since your image was exceptionally clear, I thought I'd ask if you have and feedback as to way my image as not at all crisp--rather poor. I did do an autofocus (did you set up guiding beforehand? I tried, but not sure if that help...obviously not)....was it because a full moon isn't a good idea (too much light) or, perhaps, it was just a 'soupy' atmosphere. I'm using a Fra 600 refractor and the same camera as you....but, a very disappointing image indeed. Please keep up with your channel, love the content!

Nice video step by step well explained. I would like to know which Microsoft picture editing software you used for stitching the image another thing how you do enlargement and reduction of image with asi air pro in video mode. I use Asi Air Pro, ZWO 533 MC Pro, William Optics RedCat51 with zwo Auto focuser and iOptron Gem28.

Hi thanks for watching. I use the Image Composite Editor, which I think you can no longer get from Microsoft, but you can from some other sites. I did a video a little while ago on using this, or PixInsight or photoshop to merge an image, might be worth checking it out to see which you prefer. Clear skies, Ian

Extremely glad I stumbled across this video - extremely informative and well presented tutorial! The stitching software (Microsoft Image Composite Editor) was retired a few years ago, but if you google "Microsoft ICE wayback" then the internet wayback machine has a trustworthy link. Finding this tool was a game changer, so thanks for that as well!

Hi Ian, brilliant video thank you. I've just received my ASIAIR Plus and am learning as much as I can; I was just wondering, how did you acheive zooming in on the Moon section, is that somethin part of the ASIAIR Plus or is it peculiar to your camera?

Tom, hi, thanks for watching. In the video mode you have the choice of six resolution levels, from 1920 x 1080 to I think 340 x 240. This in effect magnifies the image, a bit like Backyard EOS does, which I've previously used with my DSLR. So you can choice how much you want to zoom in, but of course you lose some resolution/increase noise and need to compensate with gain etc. At the end of the video I just used Photoshop to zoom out of the final image. kind regards Ian

Nice video. Last week I took ixdos with my asiair pro and 294mc pro with my sw 72ed AzGti eq mode. The results are very very good in my opinion and sharp like yours though I used autostakkert 3 for stacking and registax for sharpening. One thing I couldn't get any colour into my image of the moon to bring out the no mineral colours. Still trying to sort that but will see if stacking with the asiair pro enables me to colourise the moon. 👍

Many thanks, sounds good with the 72ED, which I also have, so I should try that. Have you used the camera raw filter in Photoshop that can add some colour under saturation and vibrance, not perfect but adds a bit of colour, kind regards Ian

Great video. The only way I can get an image from my asiair plus on to my tablet is in the preview mode. I also noticed that you had some icons that I don't have. Is there a step that I am missing to get a real time image?

Looking at getting a Zwo camera and ASI Air. Question for you - how were you using in and out? We’re you changing the region of interest (ROI) to change the image size? Cheers!

Hi Karl, thanks for watching. Yes I was using the ROI to zoom in and out, clearly you loose some quality when you fully zoom in, but it’s fun to see Saturn or Jupiter at this scale even if a little fuzzy. Clear Skies Ian

Hi Ian, I have just downloaded Microsoft Image Composite Editor, is there a desktop short cut for it? I have tried to open the program in the downloads section to no avail, tried to create a short cut through properties that did not work either. I am trying to get back into astrophotography after a long spell, I am going over programs to refresh the old memory bank there is a lot that I have forgotten plus cloudy weather has put me of. Nice shot of the moon by the way, I reckon it would be the most photographed object in the sky. Cheers Robert Aust'

Hi Joseph, thank you for watching. It’s not really a slider it’s a change in resolution button. I think it is now on the left of the screen, you have to click it to change to a smaller or greater resolution to change the size of the target, clear skies Ian

Do you have a direct link to Microsoft Image Composite Editor that is used to stitch the moon halves together? I Googled it and all the links I found switch to another software. How do I get Microsoft Image Composite Editor? Can you share a direct download link? Also, I found the stacked video images at 2-megapixels (1080p video) too small for my 9-megapixel ZWO ASI533MC-Pro camera. Actually, a single exposure with an 18-megapixel DSLR give better results (sharper with more detail).

Hi Michael thanks for watching. I downloaded Microsoft Image Composite Editor about 18 months ago. It looks like it is unavailable anywhere now. You can use PixInsight or Photoshop to merge multiple images of DSOs, and I think photoshop does it well for the Moon. I did a video about 18 months ago where I stitched together 13 images of the Moon into one using Photoshop. I haven’t used other cameras yet with the video mode of the ASIair pro, but will try in the coming months. Clear skies Ian

Does ASIair automatically adjust the tracking speed, when you choose Goto Moon or any planet?! Because it should differ from the DeepSky tracking… or?!

@@Chorge1972 Hi, from memory there is a solar and lunar speed at the foot of the telescope tab, so you can adjust to lunar when viewing/imaging the Moon. Clear skies Ian

Hi thanks for watching. Once you’ve done a ‘go to’ the Moon, it will slew to the Moon but can’t plate solve, it will try but just cancel it after one or two goes. You should though have the Moon in view. Now go back to the Mount tab in the ASIair pro and if tracking is switched on you can choose, sidereal, solar or lunar, select lunar and the mount will now move at the speed to match the Moon moving across the sky. Excellent tutorial Question On my asiair pro app after I capture and I go in play videos it’s NOT showing the icons on below the screen as I see on yours stacking left delete right On mine is pure blank no icons Any ideas ? I was storing video’s directly to usb is maybe why? Than I took the usb to computer it was showing avi files and jpg pictures already stacked

Hi, great video, thank you,I have a Zwo camera Asi120mc attached to my Telescope and am using the ASI air Pro, when I was in video mode,I couldn't get it clear picture of the moon it was just showing up as a very bright blob, I've tried adjusting the gain the camera is connected directly into the telescope with a nosepiece, I'm not using any filters, struggling with this please help.

John, thanks for watching, sorry to hear you are having trouble. I make sure I’m in focus using a star before moving on to the Moon, then use the largest resolution and as well as the gain, check the two white balance levels and the exposure length as in this video, hope it works, kind regards Ian

Hi Ross, thanks for watching. You can ‘zoom in and out’ by using the frame size from 1080p x 1920p to 240p x 352p, which is on the right hand side, where 1080p will give you full HD and 240p will standard definition. You can see in the video I toggle between different pixel sizes to increase or reduce the size of the Moon in the ASI294MC pro frame. Hope that helps, kind regards Ian

I use the ZWO ASIair Pro to run guiding and image taking and then I stacked the images within the ASIair Pro, I then use the Microsoft program Image Composite Editor to stitch the two images together and then finalise in photoshop.
